Oxidation of cellulose beads The oxidation of cellulose beads using TEMPO catalyst in presence of sodium chlorite and hypochlorite will result in carboxylated (COOH) cellulose beads. The introduction of charge will enable these beads to be utilised in drug delivery applications, immobilisation of biomolecules such as enzymes. 5
Functional fibres by LDH LDH Layered Double Hydroxides are nanosized synthetic clay particles that can be tailored into various mixtures and shapes Water based synthesis of these nanoparticles together with pulp fibres will lead to fibres with new properties Non-flammable and hydrophobic paper 6
Discolouration of wood extracted hemicelluloses (I) Hemicelluloses have a large potential as natural and renewable starting materials for production of various sugar-based chemicals, including so-called bioplastics High-molar-mass hemicelluloses could find uses in in food, health, papermaking, textile, paint and cosmetic industries Galactoglucomannans and xylans constitute the principal hemicelluloses in softwoods and hardwoods 7
Discolouration of wood extracted hemicelluloses (II) Hemicelluloses can be produced from mechanical pulping process waters by ultrafiltration or from wood by hot-water extraction, e.g. the BLN process Hemicelluloses from the BLN process Extremely high purity (normally >96%) But have a discoloration in concentrated solutions Negative impact the applicability of BLN hemicelluloses Fractionation and removal of possible chromophores from the hemicelluloses is an important aim 8

Biocomposites Development of new bio-based composites, with satisfactory properties for application in packaging industry. Both components of the biocomposite are derived from nature (wood fibres and shellac). Wood fibres in a form of pulp are swollen in solvent system mix with shellac and compressed moulded after regeneration. 10
Composite of polylactic acid and nanocellulose and 3D printing (I) Polylactic acid (PLA) A biodegradable thermoplastic polymer and is derived renewable sources such as starch Has a broad spectrum of applications, such as, biomedical devices, food packaging, automotive materials But, PLA needs still be synthesized Natural polymers, e.g. cellulose, is a renewable material from wood Many interesting applications owing to its good biocompatibility and biodegradability, and high mechanical strength The purpose of this study is to prepare composite of PLA and nanocellulose in the form of filament which can be further printed by 3D printing 15
Composite of polylactic acid and nanocellulose and 3D printing (II) 16
