1 Mats Morell Professor Email address: Mats.Morell@ekohist.su.se Telephone number: +46(0)8 161198 Mobile number: +46(0)7077795707 Address: Department of Economic History Stockholm University 106 91 Stockholm Sweden Present position Professor in Economic History Department of Economic History, Stockholm University Research Interests My main research interests have been early modern and recent agricultural history, but also early modern social history. My doctoral dissertation and several related publications focused on food consumption in Sweden in the 17th to the 20th centuries. Earlier I worked on social structure, ownership structure and enclosures in Swedish pre-industrial rural society, and lately I have returned to these issues on an European scale within the Progressore COST programme and the CORN-network. In the 1990s I was engaged in a broad study of the agricultural sector in Sweden. I run a project on the role of smallholdings and family farms, focusing their survival in a capitalist environment, their role on the product market and their rationalisation and mechanisation processes. I also worked with a five-volume book project of a general agricultural history of Sweden. My volume was published in 2001 and I am currently engaged as co-editor and co-author of an abbreviated version of the five volume project to be published in English. Right now I am finishing a multidisciplinary research project on generational change and the transfer of material and immaterial resources in farming communities in Sweden, Estonia and Hungary. I am also engaged in a work sponsored by the Royal Academy of Forestry and Agriculture and Swedish National Atlas aiming at the production of a 20th century agricultural-historical atlas of Sweden and in a project run by the Royal Academy of Forestry and Agriculture on Agricultural exhibitions. During my guest professorship at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, I worked on the masculinisation of farm work in the Swedish rural community in the early 20th century. Finally I have devoted some time to producing textbooks in agricultural history and economic and social history. I am planning an interdisciplinary research project (with international links) on production and consumption of leisure services, with particular reference to non-agricultural land use and I am involved with the Swedish center for Biodiversity in a project on historical land use and biodiversity. Teaching experiences
