The Problem:..the Baltic Sea countries represent almost half of the total 6 million leisure boats in Europe and a reduction in use of toxic antifouling methods will result in a substantial improvement to a more viable Baltic Sea ecosystem.
The Problem: 9 3 million boats have their homeports in the countries bordering the Baltic. Approx. 2 liters of toxic bottom paint per boat and year = 6 million liters leaking into the Baltic each summer!
Parallell solutions/processes for the Baltic: A. Stop using biocides. Use green antifouling methods 1. Hull cleaning in water 2. Keep boat above water when not in use 3. Cover hull from light and nourishment. 4. Possible to combine with lowadhesive, foul-release or biocide free bottom paints. B. Reduce biocide leakage in the marine environment 1. Gather washing residues from hull cleaning, in water and on land. 2. Use less bottom paint 3. Use less biocides in bottom paint formulas
Green Antifouling Methods No more bottom paint in the Baltic
1. Convenient and safer a. No need for painting in spring b. No need for hull cleaning in autumn a. Less time under the boat. a. Non toxic working environment
2. Cheaper, both for the boat owner and marina a. No costs for paint and painting equipment b. No costs for remowal of paint or filtering washing residual c. Less costs then for handling boats with toxic bottom paint
3. Environmental friendly a. No solvent in your lung b. No paint in your skin c. No, or less, biocide leakage in the marine environment a. In water during summer b. Ashore in autumn
4. Choise of method and distribution/availabilitity Boatowners choise of method is influenced by their use of the boat i.e: a. Frequence of use b. Time of boat trip c. Distance of boat trip d. Speed of boat e. Preferences and availability of methods.
