2 A chance to see the best ice hockey players One misconception about the IIHF World Junior Championships is that it features future stars. If you look at the development of the event, you will realize that this magnificent tournament features players who are world class stars already today. The World Juniors also show, by the way, how quickly a year goes by. Let s take you back to December 2012 and the IIHF World U20 event in Ufa, Russia. Canada s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who led the tournament in scoring with 15 points in 6 games is today an integral part of the Edmonton Oilers while his countrymen Jonathan Huberdeau (9 points in 6 games in Ufa) and Mark Scheifele (8 points in 6 games) are the future of the Florida Panthers and Winnipeg Jets respectively. USA s All-Star defenseman and gold winner in Ufa, Jacob Trouba, is playing sensationally well for the Winnipeg while teammate Alex Galchenyuk personifies the new generation Montreal Canadiens. Last year s dominating Finns Joel Armia and Markus Granlund have both signed NHL contracts and are biding their time in the AHL, but Swedes Filip Forsberg, Elias Lindholm and Rickard Rakell have all played NHL games this season. So think about this when you watch the 38 th IIHF World Junior event in Malmö you may most likely have one chance to see the best players. Next year they are probably celebrated professionals either in the NHL or in any of the European leagues. A good example of the natural turnover is the defending World Champion United States: from last year s golden roster in Ufa only there are only three returnees on the 2014 team. But this is one reason why this tournament is such a success. Players play their hearts out because there is this sense of urgency among them you may only get one shot at winning a medal. The next year you may already be able to make a living from playing hockey, but the chance to stand on the podium and celebrate a world junior championship is gone forever. For the country with the most improved development program in the last 6-7 years, taking the IIHF World Juniors to Malmö was a natural choice. Sweden has hosted the event in the far north, in the central parts, but never in the south. Although the province of Scania (Skåne in Swedish) is not traditionally hockey country in Sweden, the district has developed some good hockey talent lately. Boston Bruin s Carl Söderberg is from Malmö, while St. Louis Blues Magnus Pääjärvi one of Sweden s best World Junior performers got his hockey schooling in this city. Anaheim s sensational rookie Hampus Lindholm is also a Scania product (from Jonstorp, close to Helsingborg). But maybe the best reason to go to Malmö is the arena, Sweden s best. The only thing it is missing is a major league team in the SHL. But that s a story for another day. Enjoy your stay in Malmö. SZYMON SZEMBERG IIHF Director of Communications 2

7 Canada has a lot to prove BY JANNE BENGTSSON Canada comes to the World Junior Championship as one of the perennial favourites. Canada has won a total of 15 WJC gold medals, including four straight triumphs from 2005 to But then things went awry. It became, by Canadian hockey standards, with "only" silver medals in 2010 and 2011, a bronze medal in 2012 and the most unimaginable last year in Ufa, Russia. Hockey Canada, with no less than registered junior players, ended up in fourth place and off the podium. Experienced and recognized hockey writer and columnist Bob McKenzie took the sledge hammer in an analysis of the young Canadians in Ufa: Canada was out coached. Canada let in too many goals. Canada had the wrong players. If you didn't know better, Bob McKenzie wrote, One would think that the head coach Steve Spott and his entire staff, goalie Malcolm Subban and his backup Jordan Binnington, on the road to Ufa fell off a truck filled with Swedes... Harsh words for a fiasco that must not be repeated. So Canada has built from the ground up. In comes head coach Brent Sutter, 51, with experience in the NHL (Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils) but mainly from the WJC in 2005 and 2006, when Canada won the gold, both times without losing a single match. Early this summer, the coaches began to shape the team. In defence, Sutter during preseason chosen to bet on five players who all went in the first round of the annual NHL Entry Draft: Griffin Reinhart (New York Islanders), Morgan Rielly (Toronto Maple Leafs), Mathew Dumba (Minnesota Wild), Derrick Pouliot (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Michael Matheson (Florida Panthers). In the assault were the top players Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Warburton, both from the Halifax Mooseheads, like Max Domi from the London Knights. The latter, was of course, the son of Mats Sundin s tough teammate in Toronto, Maple Leafs Tie Domi. An interesting player showed up on the camps prior to tryouts by WJC team the final selection was made after the printing of this programme: 16-year-old Connor McDavid from Erie Otters. McDavid is considered as one of the best players for the draft pick in 2015 (!), and if he makes the cut for the WJC team then he goes the same way that previously only five players have. And not just any old: Eric Lindros, Jay Bouwmeester, Jason Spezza, Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby all played the WJC at the age of 16. Canada has a lot to prove. And they are ready to do it! 7

11 The Czech Republic faces problems BY JANNE BENGTSSON There are NHL scouts who almost completely stopped going to the Czech Republic because, as someone says There is not so much to look at. Yes, it is true to a degree, says Håkan Andersson, scout for the Detroit Red Wings and over time perhaps the most successful Swedish scout. The Czechs have had several thin years and those who appeared still didn t get the chance to prove what they can. Leaders have, for various reasons, not wanted to allow juniors into senior hockey so many young athletes have chosen to play abroad, Håkan Andersson continues. The Czech junior league has often been criticized of being too weak. The team Energie Karlovy Vary in the end chose to play in the Russian Kontinental Hockey Leagues junior League, MHL. When the club moved to the MHL, coach Jaromir Kverka explained, MHL was sharper designed and more was needed to go to the playoffs compared to at home in the Czech Republic. In the MHL Team Energie Karlovy Vary in the Central Division, plays against Team Red Army, HK MvD from Moscow and The Young Squad from Donetsk. Two of the very best young Czechs are playing in Sweden: Jakub Vrana in Linköping and David Pastrnak in second league team Södertälje SK. Both Vrana and Pastrnak are born 1996 and thus really just at the beginning of their careers at a high level. Vrana was at the end of 2012, the youngest player ever for Linköping HC in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), and Pastrnak has convinced many in Södertälje SK (SSK). Vrana has a highly developed stick handling and movement on the ice. He is also a skilled shooter who hits where he is aiming. Pastrnak is a very aggressive player, and when the young Czech last spring signed on for two more years in SSK, the Club's Sports Director Per Nygårds described him as "a modern, explosive and powerful hockey player". Thus, when Czechs now are coming to Malmö, they have much catching up to do: after the double Czech WJC gold medals in 2000, in Skellefteå and Umeå and 2001, in Moscow. But now the Czech Republic are experiencing an almost monumental drought of medals, with a bronze in Thief River Falls in 2005 as only exception. A very painful situation for Czech hockey with its proud traditions, both historically where Bohemia (after World War I, Czechoslovakia) was one of the first countries in Europe to take up the hockey sport and sporting with both Czechoslovakia (six World Championship gold medals) and the Czech Republic (also six World Championship gold medals) successes on the rink. 11

15 Last years tournament was tough for Finland BY JANNE BENGTSSON Finland passed the ticket to the World Junior Championships in Malmö with the emergency button. Well, or... when it really was at its apex, the young Finns had no trouble qualifying for the WJC-participation even in But the situation shook the nerves when Finland, against all odds, ended up in the relegation group after unsuccessful games in Russian Ufa, with losses against Sweden (4-7) and Czech Republic (1-3). In general, the past decade has been troublesome for Finnish junior ice hockey. Like Sweden, Finland has won two JWC gold medals, but to find them you have to go back quite some years in time: in 1987, Czechoslovakia and 1998 at home in Helsinki. After that Finland won a handful of medals, but after the bronze in JWC in Grand Forks in 2006 a fourth place in Alberta, Canada, 2012 is the best result. There are a bunch of "Lion kids" who will come to Malmö over Christmas and the New Year, staffed with several players who have more than a fair chance to become something great in the Hockey World. With eleven points (5 goals, 6 assists), Teuvo Teräväinen, drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks and now in Jokerit, was one of the last tournament's best scorers in JWC. Finland has the relatively small sized Artturi Lehkonen from KalPa who played his first league game for TPS Turku as a 16 year old. He is a player that NHL-scouting director Göran Stubb describes as smart and intelligent. He is a man of surprises in the offensive zone and has the ability to make the really big important goals. He is very quick in acceleration, especially when he has the puck, said Göran Stubb on Lehkonen who was Montreal Canadiens draft pick last summer. In KalPa we also find Sami Kapanen, one of Finland's biggest NHL veterans, who actually owns the team, a valuable aid for Artturi Lehkonen as well as for many other young players, including Sami Kapanens son, Kasperi. He is also a player in the highest junior elite. Finland has for many years been a great producer of talented goalies to the NHL as well as Sweden. Two of Europe's best young goalkeepers are Juuse Saros from HPK, drafted by Nashville, and Jokerit Hockey s Joonas Korpisalo, drafted by Columbus. The Finnish ice hockey has considerably older traditions than the Swedish. The first match was played on the Bothnian Bay ice outside Helsinki as early as 1899, but not until 1927 was hockey played in a more organized form. Finland began to win medals in the Olympic Games and various World Championship variations first seriously in the early 1980s. But on the junior side, as I said, results have been scant in recent years. 15

19 Germany are underdogs BY JANNE BENGTSSON Germany comes to the Junior World Championships in Malmö as underdogs. Not so strange: the young Germans have gone up and down in the WJC system, and the team's last victory in a group B match in the Junior World Championships came December 27, 2008, five years ago, when Germany won over Kazakhstan with 9-0. After that, it has become only losses in group games and a painful 9-41 in goal difference in WJC tournaments in 2011 and Most recently, in Ufa, Russia, the Germans left through a glorious 5-2 victory over Latvia in the relegation round. Now the Germans hope for more victories. In the last World Junior Championships Germany drew eight of the players from the North American junior leagues. And in the latest draft CHL (Canadian Hockey League is an umbrella organization for the three major junior leagues in Ontario, Quebec and the Western Hockey League) five young Germans were drafted. It gives hope for the WJC. The young talents, Marcus Eisenschmid chosen by Medicine Hat, Marco Notes (Charlottetown), Andreas Eder (Vancouver Giants), Max Kammerer (Regina Pats) and Tim Benda (London Knights) are great hopes for the future in a German hockey generation that only recently had the opportunity to show what it can do. Junior hockey has been neglected for a long time. The German junior league, Nachwuchsliga, for example, didn t start until the year And not too many years ago the development of junior hockey in clubs was entered as one of the licensing conditions for games in the German professional League, DEL. Some DEL clubs have fulfilled that requirement better than others: the junior series have been played in 13 seasons. Ten times it has been won by Jungadler Mannheim (Mannheim's young eagles). The German League is still heavily influenced by foreign players. When football's Bosman case opened all boundaries in the mid-1990s, the German League was flooded by imported players. Even today, imports keep the main roles in the team. This season, over 40 percent of players in the league are imports: 162 foreign players against 216 Germans. 80 Canadians and 43 Americans are added to the international element of the DEL, and there is a dominance that has held back a lot of young German players. Although the German junior hockey is relatively new, the German hockey itself is old. The first match was played in Berlin in 1897, and the first ice rink opened in So probably there is tradition. Now, there is a need for knowledge as well. 19

23 Norway are newcomers BY JANNE BENGTSSON Norway are newcomers in the A group in the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championships after a perfect completion of the tournament last year. Norway won the Division I Group A group in Amiens, France, before Belarus and Denmark with four victories and an overtime win. Now a completely different opposition is waiting. Most recently Norway was in the top division in Buffalo 2011, ended in a devastating record: 4-32 in goal difference after five losses in the group stage, including 1-7 against Sweden and 1-10 against Canada. In the relegation round was a victory against Germany, but they were relegated down to Division 1 anyway. During the period between the two "big" WJC adventures, the Norwegian junior ice hockey, has been reorganized. While the rest of the hockey world had age division U18 and U20, Norwegians have clung to U17 and U19. When the first team every year, climbed on the international hockey rankings, junior hockey was virtually at a standstill. Young Norwegians were forced abroad to be able to play at a high level. Not least Swedish clubs has received many talented Norwegian hockey players. The Norwegian system was changed to the season 2012/2013, and is now in synch with the rest of the world. Meanwhile, it spent more on the young Norwegian hockey players. Norway now has several players who practice as much as the big Nations players, says Anders Blegeberg, a Norwegian hockey profile for many years with the national team and now sports director at sports high school Wang. Both the Norwegian Top Sports high school and Wang has meant a tremendous amount of development, says Anders Blegeberg. But many problems remain. A problem with junior development is the lack of breadth in the Norwegian junior ice hockey. In the latest report from the International Ice Hockey Federation, IIHF, the record for Norway shows just under 7,000 players in total, of which 4,000 are juniors. Considerably less than for example France and Austria and, of course, a failure for the world's top winter sports nation otherwise. But a new generation is on the way. Jörgen Karterud plays in Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds in Canadian OHL. Ludvig Hoff from Vålerengen, born in 1996, is a scoring machine and counted as a big future name. His club mate Lyngseth Tallak and Swedish Hockey League (SHL) experienced Mattias Nörstebö in Brynäs are also counted as big future names. The Norwegian way up is steep. But the march has begun. 23

27 Russia hope junior players stay in the MHL BY JANNE BENGTSSON A relatively new junior league, and a senior league with high salaries, have now been set up to get young Russian hockey players to stay in Russia rather than to seek their fortunes in the United States or Canada. Most of our players who move to the United States or Canada, stops playing ice hockey or are coming back as inferior players. They are going to the United States or Canada to meet their childhood dreams. But the result is rarely as they hoped. We will stop no one from going, but those who travel should be fully prepared for what to expect, said Sergei Yakovlev, head of the Russian junior league MHL (Molodjozhnaya Hokkeynaya Liga). MHL was founded on March 26, 2009 by the 20 clubs in the KHL, the commercial companies behind the KHL and the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. Today, the MHL swelled to 67 clubs in two divisions, 39 of which in the elite Division. Since a Hungarian team left, the League is played today across nine countries: Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Austria, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania and Moldova. Behind the MHL, as well as behind the KHL, we see powerful economic interests. The director of the League is Alexander Medvedev, who is also the Managing Director of the oil and gas company Gazprom the company made a profit of billion Swedish kronor. Each MHL-club will also, it is thought, have a budget of 10 million Rubles (equivalent to approximately 2.1 million Swedish kronor). The teams play the Kharlamov Cup, named after the great old Soviet player and the goal of the League is clearly pegged out: to take the Russian junior hockey to a higher level. But there is work to do. At the last tournament, at home ice the JWC in Ufa, Team Russia picked 19 of the 23 players from Russian clubs, in the KHL and in the MHL. But after the tournament the Russian media was not gracious toward their players. Aleksandr Semak, coach of local club Tolpar in Ufa, was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency when he accused the Russian players for disciplinary problems. Disciplinary problems or not the Russian team managers, of course, rejected all accusations JWC home in Ufa was no success for the young Russians that many saw as winner of the tournament. The Russians, who played the memorable JWC final against Sweden a year earlier, barely passed through to the semi-finals, after penalty shots a 4-3 victory over Switzerland, before Sweden became just too hard in the semi final (2-3 after Overtime and Game Winning Shots). 27

31 Slovakia will send almost a club team to the World Juniors BY JANNE BENGTSSON Slovakia has not been a remarkable success story in the World Junior Championships. Despite the fact that Slovakia has exported world famous top players like Žigmund Pálffy, Pavol Demitra, Marián Gáborík and brothers Peter, Marian and Anton Šťastný, to name a few. The young ice hockey Slovaks have had difficulties in asserting themself on the international top level. The head start, with well trained players and expanding organization, as the Slovak hockey had after the partition of the great hockey nation of Czechoslovakia in the Czech Republic and Slovakia on January 1, 1993, have slowly but surely been eaten up by former minor hockey nations like Denmark, Norway, and Latvia. In the division of the two countries the Slovaks kept only just over of the nearly players from Czechoslovakia. Czech Republic today has close to players, of which just over are juniors. Slovakia's numbers: players, of which are juniors. Slovakia took the bronze in the WJC in Winnipeg in 1999, but after that, it has just been depressing. The situation hasn t become any easier due to economic problems all the time. And after two straight place eight positions and almost fiasco in Vancouver in 2006 and in 2007, the Slovaks gathered their Ice Hockey Association s top people to a meeting. The result: a national team who became a club team. Or vice versa, depending on how you want to see it. HP Orange saw the light of day to ice hockey season 2007/2008. And in orange, white and black the young players had to play against the best Slovakia could offer at senior level in the top series, the Slovak Extraliga. The aim was, of course, that the young players in Slovakia would get the maximum match training and learn how to play together. HP Orange goes, so to speak, outside Penrith in the series, the team cannot fall out and they can t go to the playoffs. Moreover, the team takes a break in the series when the Junior World Cup is approaching. In Calgary and Edmonton 2012 Slovakia reached a sixth place, the best placement so far. The last tournament, the WJC in Russian Ufa, HP Orange sent 16 of the 23 players on the team. It ended in eighth place but anyway a new contract after some really good actions, including against Russia (2-3 after Overtime), Germany (2-1) and Latvia (5-3). Now the Slovaks will do a retry. Malmö and Sweden is the right place. The last time a Slovak team surprised all was in the "major" World Championship in Gothenburg Then it ended with gold medals... 31

35 Sweden wants to win a new gold medal BY JANNE BENGTSSON The dream of a looming WJC gold on home soil in Malmö, didn t begin with Mika Zibanejads goal against Russia in Calgary two years ago. When the super talent from Djurgården scored, after in Overtime, and pushed Sweden into the first WJC gold in 31 years, the planning for the new, bigger and better Swedish hockey times had been running for more than ten years. It was 2002, and we found that Swedish juniors went worse and worse internationally. In December of that year we called to a meeting with hockey profiles from all over Sweden, we sat down and began to discuss: what can we do?, says the Swedish Ice Hockey Association s Director of Development and National teams, Tommy Boustedt. It was a big meeting at the right time: in the WJC tournament in Halifax later that month, Sweden finished eighth and was just about to be relegated down from the A group. The goal was to get Swedish hockey to produce more players fit for the elite. We started with 100 action points and from there we created a plan for ten points, and we have been working for that plan, says Tommy Boustedt. The plan, in which the first three paragraphs are talent development, increased investment in hockey high schools and at junior national teams, was launched to the WJC tournament in It bore fruit directly: The Junior Team finished on seventh place, the year after sixth, then fifth and fourth place. After that it has become a medal in five out of six tournaments, with the gold medal in 2012 as the highlight. The World Junior Championship has become a climax in the hockey world. Previously we talked about tomorrow's stars playing in the WJC. But those who play in the WJC now, are already stars with experience from the best leagues, says Tommy Boustedt. Head coach Rikard Grönborg has a wide base to choose from. Twelve of the players who were playing for Sweden and captured silver, after the final loss against the United States in Ufa in 2013, are available. Among them giant talents as Robert Hägg, MODO Hockey, Christian Djoos, Brynäs IF, Linus Arnesson, Djurgårdens IF, all defence players. Among forwards there are big talents as Sebastian Collberg and Alexander Wennberg, both from Frölunda HC, as well as Filip Sandberg from HV 71. Swedish junior hockey is very much alive and very much one of the favorites for the gold in Malmö. Mika Zibanejads golden goal from 2012, showed that anything is possible, will of course be shown over and over again in the Swedish WJC camp. But just as inspiration. The generation that won the gold is too old now. We already said last year that we would not try to defend our gold from 2012, but conquer a new, says Rikard Grönborg. We are going into this tournament with the same objective. 35

39 Hard working Switzerland getting better and better BY JANNE BENGTSSON Not so many years ago, Switzerland was one of those hockey nations which would be happy if they avoided the double-digit defeat against hockey powerhouses Canada, Russia, Sweden, and the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. But it was then, not now. The new era of ice hockey was manifested clearly earlier this year, when the Swiss went to the World Championship final against Sweden in Ericsson Globe, Stockholm. An achievement, only underlining the fact that Switzerland, now is a hockey nation to be reckoned with, for real. People with great ice hockey knowledge were more and more impressed and appreciative of the Swiss hockey. If you look at how rapid the increase in the number of Swiss players in North America is, it is evident how good their development has been. It's not just about the players in the NHL, but also that many come over to play in the junior leagues, and does so with great success, said Chris Pryor, Director of scouting activities in the Philadelphia Flyers. Håkan Andersson, head of the European scouts for the Detroit Red Wings, notes that there is still much to do on the tactical side and with the general skill level, but that the Swiss win on their work ethic. No players work harder, all over the ice, shift after shift, game after game, says Hakan Andersson. The Swiss World Championship players proved their high value in Stockholm in May, and in the junior hockey ranks, which got a big boost in Switzerland, a new generation is ready to take over. Kevin Fiala, born in 1996 and now in the Swedish team HV 71's junior activities, is one of the players who is impressing with great talent. In the leagues within the Canadian Hockey League is Timo Meier from Halifax Mooseheads, Pius Suter and Phil Baltisberger in Guelph Storm as well as the 19 year old forward and striker Fabrice Herzog in the Quebec Remparts. And among players born in 1997 is an even more promising group, according to the international scouting services. Swiss Scout Thomas Roost in the NHL Central Scouting Service sees widening in the Swiss hockey as one of the reasons for the success. Now we have 50 players competing for a place in the squad, and it has raised its level and on the level below them. The junior program produces stable players and good skaters with great discipline in the team game and in the game without puck. It is often difficult to score on a hard working Swiss team, says Thomas Roost, as the young Swiss are looking to prove in Malmö over the New Year weekend. 39

43 USA builds for success BY JANNE BENGTSSON There will certainly be some jokes about the American WJC coach, that he already had his big day. This is the same Lucia that was responsible for the United States to defend its WJC gold from Ufa in Don Lucia can take a joke. The 55 year old from Grand Rapids in Minnesota, who takes over after the fortunate gold coach Phil Housley, is certainly no newcomer in ice hockey. Don Lucia has coached youth and college hockey for 26 seasons, from Alaska through Colorado and back home where he since 1999 is head coach of the University of Minnesota. Lucia knows just what it is about. Don Lucia was elected US Coach to the WJC for his exceptional ability to develop players. 19 of the players he coached when they were junior- or Lucia college players, has continued to the NHL. Don s team plays really strong and fast paced hockey, says Jim Johannson, General Manager of Team USA. The American team managers have a lot to choose from. United States has the second highest numbers of players in the world (after Canada) and boasts a total of registered players, of which are juniors. But only 23 of them may play for the USA in the World Junior Championship. Don Lucia and the team managers began to scout players for their WJC team already at the beginning of the year, and in August a 45-strong troop was selected. The group was trimmed further during a test tournament in Lake Placid, New York, in October. Don Lucia was particularly impressed by two players in Lake Placid: goalie Jonathan (Jon) Gillies and striker Quentin Shore. The latter came from the University of Denver and was drafted by the Ottawa Senators. Gillies, from Providence College and drafted by the Calgary Flames, is a veritable giant at barely 200 pounds and around 2.10 with skates on. He was playing already in Ufa but only for one period in which he didn t allowed any goals against. If we're going to win in Malmö, we must have good performances by our goalies, says Don Lucia. The United States had it in Ufa, a year ago. Jon Gibson came out big and was also selected both logically and well deserved MVP of the tournament. Gibson currently resides in Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League, however, as well as an additional 15 team mates from Ufa, too old and can't be in Malmö. The one who will be missing is the defenceman Jacob Trouba, nine points (4 goals, 5 assist) in Ufa. In October Trouba made his first game for Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League he scored, had one assist and played most of all on the ice. We have to start over and build the team for this year. We cannot live on old merits, says Don Lucia. Except, possibly, the respect the reigning World Champions will get from the other teams. 43

75 A great challenge for Team Sweden BY JANNE BENGTSSON Rikard Grönborg began planning for this year's Junior World Championships immediately after the final loss in last year's tournament. A great challenge, says the 45 year old on the job as Head Coach for Sweden U20 team. Rikard Grönborg is relatively anonymous for the ice hockey interested public. But in hockey circles, he is well known: extremely involved in the Swedish talent development for nearly ten years, as a lecturer, scout, manager and trainer. Now Grönborg is ready for graduation. And there he has taken a coaching experience stretching over 20 years. From his playing carreer as defender of his first club Huddinge, to Rögle, Tyringe and Hammarby. For three years as a player at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota season 1994/1995 to eight years as Coach and General Manager for, among others, the Great Falls Americans, Central Texas Blackhawks and Spokane Chiefs. And after that he went home to the Swedish Ice Hockey Association in Four years later, Rikard took over the main responsibility for Team Sweden U18. It is a security that I have been working with the guys for a couple of years. I have been at Roger Rönnbergs trips and I know the players. So we're going with a well tuned group, says Rikard Grönborg who gets Tomas Montén with experience from Djurgården and Timrå as an Assistant Coach, now a junior coach in Linköping, at his side in Malmö. Rikard Grönborg is a well educated ice hockey man. He works for the template that applies to the Swedish national teams. But he is not static in his thinking. I want players with different skills and minds, so that you can change a match. A team is as a living document, which you have to update all the time. A Junior World Championship at home, of course, means increased pressure on and exposure of the players. For many, it could perhaps be difficult to manage. Rikard Grönborg doesn t fear that kind of problems. We have a plan for how this should be handled. We will create a group with our own rules, a team which developes along the way and who have full focus on the games. Rikard Grönborgs two years as one of the coaches for the U20-team finished with a gold and a silver. Rikard Grönborg, remember with pleasure Mika Zibanejads overtime goal in the final against Russia in Yes, it is of course not to forget. We will use it as an inspiration. But at the same time: the generation which played then is gone now. And even before the last JWC we said internally that we "...wouldn t defend a gold, we would conquer a new!". That is the case now as well. 75

76 Alexander Wennberg goes for the Gold Medal BY JANNE BENGTSSON He has three silver medals from various junior championships. So Alexander Wennberg would gladly take that gold medal now. To capture a JWC Gold Medal at home...there's nothing bigger, "says Frölunda's attacking talent. Alexander Wennberg was playing JWC for U20 already last year, one of eight players from Ufa who were young enough then to play the JWC also this year. And the 19 year old from the Stockholm suburb Saltsjö-Boo, of course, remembers the painful final loss against the United States, 1-3. Of course I remember it, but at the same time, it is nothing to dwell on too much. It is better to remember the great feeling it was to play for Sweden in a big tournament and how great it was just getting to participate in this kind of thing, "said Alexander Wennberg. Team Sweden goes for gold, of course, at home ice in Malmö. And in that case a welcome thing for Alexander Wennberg. He has enough of Silver Medals: three straight from junior finals the past three years. First silver in the U18 Swedish Championship with Djurgården in 2011, then silver in the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship and, most recently, silver in the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship in Russian Ufa. It was a disappointing loss last year. Now we will make sure to do a good tournament in Malmö. It is clear that we are going for gold on home turf. Alexander Wennberg started his hockey career in the Stockholm club Boo IK, before joining Djurgårdens IF, where he played for three seasons. The last season with Djurgården in the second league, where Alexander was one of the team's best scorer, with 32 points (14/18) in 46 games. That was something that made Frölunda HC, with former U20-coach Roger Rönnberg at the helm, keep an eye at Alexander. The NHL club Columbus Blue Jackets also noted his success. This summer, Alexander was drafted in the first round as the 14 th player overall. It's the NHL, which is the goal for me, and I think right now that Frölunda is the right club to play for if I want to reach that goal. So changing club was important to me. It's a better league and a higher level, I encounter better players every day and I get to fight in a different way," says Alexander. It is developing to be playing against the best in Sweden and to always face tough competition. And I feel that Roger Rönnberg is the right coach for me. He is an expert on getting his players to file details, to get the players to never be satisfied. There is always something that can be a little better. I feel like I have developed as a player, says Alexander. Alexander Wennberg was a good player already in Ufa, a year ago. Now, with a half year top league experience, he will become even better. 76
