Swedish Research Links Programme Hej! Med detta brev/announcment inbjuds du att vara med i en internationell konferens anordnat av institutionen för socialt arbete vid Umeå Universitet under temat Coping with Stress den 30 september och 1 oktober 2009. Ordet Coping betyder att hantera och begreppet introducerades av Susan Folkman och Richard Lazarus och forskning om individens förmåga att förstå och agera under stress har sedan dess varit mycket uppmärksammat. Susan Folkman, Professor Emeritus från USA medverkar vid konferensen och hon kommer att berätta om sin forskning och hur praktiker kan använda sig av den. Tillsammans med henne kommer Syd Afrikanska, Tyska, Iranska och Svenska forskare med praktisk erfarenhet, att berätta om sina erfarenheter från praktik och forskning. Konferensen kommer att erbjuda möten mellan forskare och praktiker från olika områden. Berörda områden kan vara professioner som möter/behandlar klienter som befinner sig under stress och professioner där man själv riskerar att utsättas för stress. Alla grupper är lika välkomna. Doktorander ges också möjlighet att presentera sina forskningsprojekt. På så sätt kan de inspireras av praktiker såväl som av forskare för att utveckla sina idéer. We are delighted to present the following Keynote speakers: Susan Folkman (USA), Ph.D., is Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Folkman received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley where she remained until 1988, when she moved to the School of Medicine at UCSF. Until 2009, she was also the Osher Distinguished Professor of Integrative Medicine and Director of the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Folkman is internationally recognized for her theoretical and empirical contributions to the field of psychological stress and coping, especially in the contexts of caregiving, bereavement, and end-of-life care. Maretha Visser (South Africa) is a counselling psychologist and associate professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pretoria. She teaches community psychology and involves students in large-scale community interventions to promote health and well-being. Her latest research focus on HIV prevention amongst young people and the development of psychological support structures to assist people living with HIV to cope with their situation. A specific focus in recent research was on HIV+ women, the experience of stigma and coping strategies.
Deon Meiring (South Africa) is a Senior Industrial Psychologist at the South African Police Services, Psychological Services (1991-2009). In October 2007 he was appointed as Assistant Professor extraordinary at the Department of Industrial Psychology at the University of Stellenbosch. He is also a member of the Work Well Research Unit for people, policy & performance at the North-West University. His current teaching, research, and other activities are in the field of Industrial and Cross-Cultural Psychology. He is also involved with South African GRID-plus project which aims to reveal the meaning structure of the emotion domain in the 11 official languages of South Africa. Mojgan Padyab (Iran) is a biostatistician and has a master degree in Public Health. She is currently doing her PhD study at the department of Social Work at Umeå University. In her thesis she investigates how Iranian social workers cope with threat and violence in client meeting. She is mainly interested in the psychometric properties of the Iranian version of the Ways of Coping Checklist. Jörg Richter (Germany, Norway), Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and licensed cognitive psychotherapist currently working as senior researcher at R.BUP in Oslo, Norway, and as professor in clinical psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Rostock, Germany. He has an extensive clinical experience of psychological treatment with the whole variety of psychological disorders. His major research foci are complexity of depression/depressivity, personality and psychopathology, parental rearing and psychopathology, coping and resilience, and end-of-life decisions with a crosscultural comparison approach.
Gerd Ahlström (Sweden) is Dean, Academic leader and Professor in Nursing at the School of Health Sciences, Jönköping University. She is doing research on the situation of persons living with chronic illness, studied from a family perspective. One of the aims of this research is to increase the understanding of what problems and strains the patients and their relatives face in everyday life. The theory of coping and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire has been used in a lot of empirical studies, helpful in elucidating the patients own capabilities and resources when it comes to handling difficult life situations caused by illness.
