The arena New innovative lightweight materials and technologies are becoming increasingly complex often combining several materials in one structure. The manufacturing process can also be used to create graded properties within each class of materials enabling tailored properties at different regions of a component. Integration of materials science into computational mechanics and applied to integrated design of manufacturing process and product is necessary in order to achieve this.

The means: The nucleus Senior researchers Younger researchers Eight younger researchers expected started April 2014. Will devote about 35% of their time to SRA 1 and are expected to reach 60% in total as they will create additional projects within LIGHTer s theme. They have complementary competences and common focus. The goals 1. Create a sustainable Swedish, multi-disciplinary research cluster in the area modelling and tools for virtual validation and verification of lightweight materials and structures considering their constituents, microstructure and processing. The models developed shall give efficient and reliable prediction of how these influence the material s process ability, properties p and thereby the properties of the final product. The cluster will consist of the champion (project leader), four senior and eight younger researchers. The first group will devote 20% and the younger researchers 40% of full time to R&D within the cluster. It is of particular importance to obtain a gender balance in the group of younger researchers. The cluster will initiate additional projects financed outside LIGHTer and form a larger network.
