In total, 7.5 % or 2.1 million hectares of forest are legally protected, and 77 % of the protected forested area in the country is within the montane region. The major part of this area lies within nature reserves. The protection and conservation of forests is not representative, which is mostly due to the small proportion of protected and conserved productive forests below the montane region. The mountain region include forests with a high level of connectivity and ecological function, while such forests in other parts of the country are mostly found within high-value tracts and clusters of core sites. Over 50 % of the area of forested core sites lacks legal protection below the montane region. In the montane region, there are several large forests with a primeval character that are unprotected. Gaps - examples Gaps in implementation of protected areas plans, strategies and programmes Gaps in identifying and preventing, and/or mitigating the negative impacts of key threats to protected areas Transboundary protected areas - further analyses of potential areas need to be done. Provide an enabling policy, institutional and socio-economic environment for protected areas Communities (municipalities) often question the establishment of new protected areas due to the difficulty to see local benefits. No research program regarding protected areas. Naturvårdsverket Swedish Environmental Protection Agency 2013-04-03 20
