Cold Climate Chamber Simulating extreme high and low temperatures In our climate chamber we can very precisely simulate whatever climate conditions needed, in order to verify the performance of products and anticipate any problems that such conditions might cause. Temperature and humidity can be varied over a range, in cycles ranging from hours to several days.
The Cold Climate test centre consortium SP is the largest research institutes in Sweden specialising in i.e. energy technology, material properties, safety and focusing on research, test and validation services to a variety of industries. Vattenfall is an energy company and operates almost 2 GW wind power through more than 1 000 wind turbines spread from cold climate in Nordic to further south in Europe. Swedish Wind Power Technology Centre (SWPTC) focus on developing knowledge of the construction of wind turbines and of optimizing maintenance and production costs. The objective of the Centre is to supply the Swedish industry with in-depth know-how within the field of wind power. Cold climate is a prioritized research area for the center. Vindkraftscentrum operates as two different regional organisations in the county of Jämtland and in the counties of Västerand Norrbotten to promote establishment of wind power in the regions in a way that create local benefit and local jobs. Skellefteå Kraft is a regional developer and power utility that operates 930 GWh wind power, all in cold climate areas. Vinnova promote sustainable growth by funding research and stimulating collaborations between companies, universities, research institutes and the public sector. Vinnova is also the national agency for the EU framework program for research and innovation.
Project phases The CC Test project has been has passed two project phases and are now in the middle of the third phase. Phase 1 Feasibility study (completed 2011). Phase 2 Location study with short list of locations and preliminary business plan and budget for CAPEX and OPEX (completed 2013). Phase 3 Selection of location and LOI with land owner and municipality, meeting and dialogue with wind industry, funding strategy for investment and information for FID (ongoing).
How we select location Main criteria's in order of priority: High probability for light ice growth during a long period High probability to get necessary permits Low cost of grid interconnection High probability for extreme low temperatures High probability for extreme wind conditions Not to far from airport, roads, accommodation etc.
Selection in numbers Metrological parameters Ice Number of hours >350 h/year (2 weeks) with 10g/h/m ice growth the minimum year Temperature Extreme temperature - number of hours < -10 0 C (rating) Wind speed Average wind speed > 7 m/s Extreme wind speed - number of hours < 20 m/s (rating)

What CC Test will offer to the wind industry CC Test (Cold Climate Test station) will be a full scale test station in the northern part of Sweden focused on test, validation and certification activities for the onshore wind industry. CC Test will be located in an area with excellent conditions for test, validation and certification of wind turbines as well as turbine components or sub systems during icy cold climate conditions. CC test will have the capacity to host full scale wind turbines and wind turbine equipment. CC Test will provide services within cold climate testing to developers and power utilities before investing in large scale projects in cold climate areas. CC Test will provide services to wind turbine and turbine component manufacturers during their product development phase. CC Test will offer training opportunities for service personnel in cold climate conditions. CC Test will be open for R&D activities from the industry as well as from academic partners. Infrastructure as well as permits are included in the test package as a full service concept and additional support services for onsite hands on support and monitoring, will be available.
Lessons learned Good correlation between hours of ice growth and height above sea level (>700 m) In cloud icing the most common ice type Landscape profile has a influence on ice growth Further north in Sweden do not have to mean more ice Electrical grid will have a large impact on cost and timeline
Next steps Meetings and dialogue with wind industry Selecting the preferred location Signing LOI with local government Signing land permit agreement with landowner Erect wind and ice met mast and start measurements Permit application for the selected location Assurance of grid connection Finalise funding strategy and Prepare information needed for FID
