Mattias Nordéus Immaculate Conception Exhibition: 28 Nov - 17 Jan Gallery closed: 19 Dec -7 Jan Mattias Nordéus's first full solo show with the gallery consists of precisely worked wooden sculptures and paintings that appropriate Christian icons in art history. Icons that have helped to define and refine a Western European ideology. The art historical images are manipulated with video game graphics, inventive narrative sequences and contemporary gestures. One sculpture made after Michelangelo s, The Deposition (1550), depicts three figures holding the lifeless body of Jesus Christ just after being removed from the cross. This piece was originally an interpretation of communal suffering without the possibility of redemption as the 4 figures are attached by a single marble piece from which it was carved. The Nordéus Pieta, carved in wood, has three figures dressed in combat uniforms holding a fourth slain comrade who almost floats in their arms. The figures are individually carved and the warm embrace of the central figure marks a stark contrast to the bulked young males and green uniforms. Modern armies are tooled with young video gaming men and women and governments visit gaming conventions to entice this demographic to volunteer for service. Youthful exuberance, strategic thinking, and the ability to operate modern technology makes it cheaper to train these new recruits and websites such as: http://www.goarmy.com/aarmy/index.jsp have been made for educational and insider perspectives into career opportunities in the military. America's Army provides civilians with an inside perspective and a virtual role in today's premier land force: the U.S. Army. The game is designed to provide an accurate portrayal of Soldier experiences. The game is an entertaining way for young adults to be educated about the U.S. Army and see some of the career opportunities available to Soldiers in the U.S. Army all this as a virtual Soldier. America's Army emphasizes teamwork, values and responsibility as means to achieving the goals. (Source US Army Website) While most works in this exhibition are detailed sculptures, one large watercolor collage is made after the centerpiece of Hieronymus Bosch s The Garden of Earthly Delights (1504) which illustrates by some accounts a sinful life on earth. The Nordéus scene shows an invasion of armed forces that intervene intimate coupling of the figures. The naked figures are held at gun point asking, if ideologues on the religious right have high-jacked moral perspectives within the church to be more exclusive than inclusive. Mattias Nordéus was born in 1978 and is a resident of Malmö, Sweden. His work has been shown at Electrohype, Lunds Konsthall, 2006 and in a two person exhibition at Milliken Gallery, 2006. He is in the collection of Malmö Konstmuseum and has received the Edstrandska Grant. Please contact the gallery for further information.
