Click-evoked emission Distortion i product Kemp, 2002 Hörselbanorna Adapted from http://serous.med.buffalo.edu/hearing Monaural Cues Loudness Doppler shift Sound Localization Binaural Cues Interaural time differences Interaural phase differences Interaural intensity differences Loudness Sound sources are louder when they are closer than when they are farther away. A sound source that increases in loudness is perceived as approaching. A sound source that decreases in loudness is perceived as retreating. Knowledge about loudness guides interpretation. 13
Doppler Effect When a moving sound source is perceived by a stationary listener, the frequency of the sound shifts depending on whether the source is approaching or retreating. We often experience the Doppler effect we police cars and ambulances pass by us quickly. Frequency shifts up as ambulance approaches Frequency shifts down as ambulance approaches Binaural Cues to Location Azimuth 180 We have two ears. We can infer the location of a sound source by comparing the sound input to the two ears. Having ears on the left and right side of our head (rather top and bottom) allows us localize sounds in azimuth. 90 Right 90 Left 0 Interaural Time Differences When the sound source is directly in front of the listener, the sound arrives at both ears at the same time. Interaural Time Differences When the sound source is to the left of the listener, the sound arrives at the listener s left ear before it arrives at the right ear. Sound Source Sound Source 14

Sound doesn t travel well through our heads: sound shadow.
