2010 Season Highlights Parr, K. Johnson Earn Big Ten Honor Sophomore shortstop Josh Parr earned third-team All-Big Ten honors and pitcher Kevin Johnson was a unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman when the league announced its postseason honors on May 25. Parr led all Big Ten shortstops with a.337 average and 21 runs in conference play and finished the season strong, hitting 13-for-38 (.342) over Illinois final 11 games. Johnson averaged over six innings per Big Ten start, going 4-2 with a 5.36 ERA in conference games. His highlight was a six-hit shutout against Purdue on May 15. He ranked sixth in the Big Ten in opposing batting average in Big Ten games and tied for eighth in strikeouts in conference action. Argo Attacks Record Book Willie Argo, who hit the second-most home runs by a freshman in school history in 2009, broke Illinois single-season stolen bases record with 41 in 52 games in 2010, including 15 steals in the last 16 games and four multiple-steal games. He also was successful on 23 of his last 25 attempts and had 10 multiple-steal games. Argo Ties Fastest Illini to 100 Hits Argo also reached 100 career hits on April 13 against Eastern Illinois in only his 269th career at bat, tying former Illini first baseman Andy Schutzenhofer as the fastest Illinois player to reach 100 hits. Illini Enjoy Trip to Busch Stadium The Fighting Illini squared off with Missouri on April 7 in the Battle at Busch, a wooden-bat game at Busch Stadium, the home of the St. Louis Cardinals (above). It was the second-straight year that the Cardinals hosted a collegiate game prior to their home opener, using the event as a run-through for their operation. It was a once-in-alifetime experience for many of the players, but the Tigers came out on top with a 7-4 win. Illini Take Down #12 Coastal Carolina Illinois had six players with multiple hits, junior designated hitter Casey McMurray tied the game in the seventh with a three-run homer and the Illini scored three in the top of the ninth to defeat No. 12 Coastal Carolina, 11-10, at the Caravelle Resort Classic on March 12. The Nos. 4-7 hitters in the Illini order combined to hit 11-for-18 with 10 RBIs and five runs, and reliever Mike Sterk tossed two scoreless innings to close out the game and earn the victory. The win was Illinois seventh over a ranked opponent in the last two seasons and turned out to be one of only six regular-season losses for NCAA Super Regional participant Coastal Carolina. Illini Offense STarts Hot but Fades Late After averaging 7.8 runs per game over their first 27 contests, the Illini slumped to an average of 5.2 runs per game over their last 25 contests, with 19 of those 131 runs coming against Butler on May 5. Illinois scored more than six runs only four times in that span and the Illini posted double-digit hits only 12 times during those 25 games. That is a significant drop-off after the Illini scored eight or more runs 15 times in the season s first 27 games. But May is Nicer to Illini Bats Despite their scoring woes late in the year, the Illini broke out of them by posting double-digit hits in eight of their last 11 games and averaging 7.1 runs over that span. Illinois is averaging 11.2 hits per game and 3.8 extra-base hits per game in its last 11 games. Also helping the cause was an increase in walks, as Illinois took 43 free passes over the last 11 games (3.9 per game). K.J. Finds a Groove Freshman pitcher Kevin Johnson had a fantastic start in his complete-game shutout of Purdue on May 15. That put an exclamation point on his hot stretch during which he allowed only four runs in 24 innings over three starts. Against the Boilers, he didn t allow a runner past second base and needed only 103 pitches for a complete game. In Big Ten games, Johnson ranked fourth in wins, sixth in opponent batting average and eighth in strikeouts. R-o-b-e-r-t-s Spells Relief Sophomore closer Bryan Roberts thrived in the closer s role in 2010 after being Illinois Sunday starter as a freshman. Roberts led the team, tied for fourth in the Big Ten with nine, and was second in the league with six saves in conference games. He tied for second on Illinois singleseason saves list and tied for third on the school record list for saves in a Big Ten season. He was 9-for-9 in save chances, with four of them lasting more than one inning. And he didn t allow a run in a save situation in 2010. Illini Are Repeat Offenders The Fighting Illini stole 114 bases in 144 attempts in 2010, ranking 12th in the country in steals per game. It marked the third time in the last four years that Illinois stole more than 100 bases in a year (also in 2007 & 2008) and was the second-most steals in a season in school history. In addition, center fielder Willie Argo ranked fifth in steals per game with 0.79 per game. 54 // 2011 Illinois Baseball
2010 Season Highlights Argo Attacks Opponent Arms Center fielder Willie Argo showed his freshman season wasn t a fluke with a strong sophomore campaign despite playing the last half of the season with a broken wrist. He ranked second on the team in average (.318), on-base percentage (.421) and slugging percentage (.495). He also stole 41-of-45 bases, being thrown out for the first time on April 4 against Penn State. Illini Earned Weekly Honors Two Fighting Illini earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors in 2010, as Matt Dittman shared the award with Indiana s Micah Johnson on March 15 and Willie Argo shared the honor with Indiana s Alex Dickerson on March 29. In 2009, Illinois earned Player or Pitcher of the Week honors a school-record seven times. Dittman Dominated Early Foes Junior first baseman Matt Dittman started the season with a 3-for-4 effort and hasn t let up on opposing pitching, hitting at a.500 clip through 14 games. But he broke his right wrist against Southeastern on March 20 and missed the last 38 games after having surgery on April 16. Argo Nabs Season Steals Record Center fielder Willie Argo had a phenomenal season on the basepaths, stealing 41-of-45 bases in 52 games. He broke the school record in the final game of the 2010 season. Below is the list of the top three basestealers in school history: 1. Willie Argo (2010)............. 41 2. Kyle Hudson (2008)............. 40 Shawn Roof (2007)...............40 Illini Run Rampant Willie Argo s school-record 41 stolen bases led an Illini base-stealing crew that ranked second all-time on the single-season steals chart in school history and represents the third time in the last four years that Illinois has topped 100 steals in a season.
