En ny musikfestival ser dagens ljus och låter sig höra: OrganSpace Stockholm! Orgel är en av världens äldsta instrument med en ovanlig historia och stilistisk mångfald, såväl genom olika epoker som genom olika kulturlandskap. Knappast något annat instrument smälter ihop och kommunicerar på så fascinerande sätt med de rum den klingar i: I kyrkor eller profana rum som Stockholms Stadshus, i biosalonger eller helt oväntade salar som reaktorhallen på KTH. År 2017 firas Reformationens 500-årsjubileum och Finlands självständighets 100-årsjubileum inspiration för de elva konserterna och många av de olika workshops som ingår i första upplagan av OrganSpace Stockholm. Vi önskar er många magiska konsertupplevelser! A new music festival is here to be enjoyed: OrganSpace Stockholm! Organs are one of the oldest instruments in the world with an unusual history and multitude of styles, through both different eras and different cultures. There is hardly another instrument that blends together and communicates so fascinatingly with the spaces it is played in: in churches or public venues such as Stockholm s City Hall, cinemas or surprising places such as the reactor chamber at the Royal Technical College. 2017 marks the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation and the 100th Anniversary of Finland s Independence - inspiration for the eleven concerts and many of the various workshops which will be part of the first ever Organ Space Stockholm. Våra konserter kan klinga vidare... Musik kan förändra liv. Under de sista tjugo åren har tiotusentals pojkar och flickor i demokratiska republiken Kongo tvingats vara barnsoldater. Ett utbildningscentrum hos Baptistkyrkan i Bukavu/Kongo ger ungdomar möjlighet till en nystart, t ex som instrumentbyggare. De flesta av de drygt 800 ungdomar fick som barn aldrig chans till utbildning, de blev offer och vittne till tortyr, våldtäkter och mord. Instrumentbyggandet ger dessa unga människor nya perspektiv, och gitarrer ur verkstaden i Bukavu har redan blivit berömda och spelas av många kända professionella musiker i Afrika och Europa. Inträde till alla konserter inom festivalen OrganSpace Stockholm är gratis, men vi ber Er om en generös gåva för projektet Gitarrer istället för gevär som drivs av tyska organisationen Brot für die Welt. Our concerts keep sounding out Music can change lives. For the last twenty years, tens of thousands of boys and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been exploited as child soldiers. An education centre run by the Baptist Church in Bukavu, Congo offers youngsters the chance to start over again. The majority of these over 800 youngsters never had access to schooling and were instead the victims of and witnesses to torture, rape and murder. Making musical instruments affords these young people new perspectives and opportunities. Guitars from the workshop in Bukavu are already famous and are used by many professional musicians in Africa and Europe. We offer free entry to all concerts in the festival Organ Space Stockholm. Kalevi Kiviniemi Kalevi Kiviniemi (born 1958 in Finland) is a world-renowned concert organist. Kiviniemi s international career began with recitals in Japan and London in the early 1990s, and soon after he was touring in Europe, the USA, Russia, Asia, Australia and the Philippines. In addition to solo recitals and chamber music concerts, Kiviniemi has appeared with major orchestras such as the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. He has served on the juries of international organ competitions (Nürnberg 1996, Capri 1998, Speyer 2001, Korschenbroich 2005, St. Albans 2013, Strasbourg 2016), and has given master classes at places such as Ruhr University in Bochum and Sibelius Academy in Finland. Kiviniemi was the artistic director of the Lahti Organ Festival for eleven years, from 1991 to 2001. Kiviniemi specializes in French music and has given recitals at Notre Dame Cathedral, St. Sulpice, and Basilique Sainte-Clotilde in Paris. He has also made recordings on the historical Cavaillé-Coll organs in Orléans, and Rouen. Kiviniemi s discography includes more than 160 titles, including recordings made on historical organs in the USA, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany. Many of his recordings have won awards, and he has two gold records, and one platinum. In 2001, Kiviniemi received the Janne Prize for the best Finnish solo disc, and in 2009, the State Prize for Music in Finland, the most coveted music award in the country. In 2012, he was named Chevalier OCM, and in 2014 he received the Pro Cultura Tavastica et Fennica Award in Helsinki. Kalevi Kiviniemi has made several television performances, including one at Notre Dame in Paris in 2000. Simon Gledhill Simon was born in Halifax, UK and showed a keen interest in music from an early age. He started learning to play the piano accordion at age six and continued with that instrument for eleven years, winning several competitions. When he was ten years old, his parents purchased a small electronic organ. After initially teaching himself to play it, he began formal studies with a local teacher, Michael Woodhead, who also gave him tuition in classical organ and piano. Simon s first experience of the theatre pipe organ was seeing and hearing Ernest Broadbent play Britain s most famous Mighty Wurlitzer at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. Shortly afterwards he discovered a privately-owned instrument close to his home and started making weekly visits for practice sessions. In 1982 he entered and won the UK Northern Young Theatre Organist of the Year competition. Nigel Ogden, presenter of the BBC radio programme The Organist Entertains, was in the audience and invited him to record for the programme. The resulting broadcasts generated concert offers, and Simon has since performed extensively in the UK as well as touring in Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. He has performed several times for the American Theatre Organ Society, was named ATOS Organist of the Year in 1997, and was inducted into the ATOS Hall of Fame in 2015. Simon s music has won high praise from his peers. Lyn Larsen, one of the USA s leading theatre organists, described him as: That rare combination of flawless technique, impeccable phrasing and an unerring sense of musical good taste, while Nigel Ogden said: Here is someone who was born to be a theatre organist. His ability has rightfully earned him the genuine admiration of both audiences and colleagues alike. Simon combines his concert and recording activities with work for the Cinema Organ Society, the UK s leading theatre organ preservation group, and a full-time career in finance, based in London. Stefan Therstam studerade för Gotthard Arnér och Rune Engsö i solistiskt orgelspel samt för Anders Bondeman i improvisation. 1988 vann han den legendariska Internationella orgelimprovisationstävlingen i Haarlem, Holland, och 1999 blev han utsedd till organist i Engelbrektskyrkan i Stockholm och är ansvarig för kyrkans rika musikutbud. Stefan Therstam utnämndes 2002 till professor vid Kungliga Musikhögskolan i Stockholm och undervisar sedan 1985 i liturgiskt orgelspel och orgelimprovisation. Han är också ansvarig för skolans kyrkomusikerutbildning och studierektor vid institutionen för klassisk musik. Stefan Therstam konserterar regelbundet inom och utom landet. Hösten 2003 genomförde han sin första konsertserie i Japan och innevarande höst väntar bl a konserter och masterclasses vid Åbos Internationella orgelfestival. Johannes Landgren studerade vid Musikhögskolan i Göteborg. I maj 1997 disputerade han på en avhandling om den tjeckiske kompositören Petr Ebens orgelmusik. Han har under senare år varit aktiv som orgellärare vid Musikhögskolan i Göteborg samt som frilansande dirigent och organist. För närvarande bedriver han postdoktoral forskningsverksamhet vid den Konstnärliga Fakulteten vid Göteborgs Universitet, där han även är professor i orgelspel. Från höstterminen 2017 kommer han även att undervisa i orgelspel vid Kungliga Musikhögskolan i Stockholm. Isabelle Demers With playing described as having bracing virtuosity (Chicago Classical Review) and being fearless and extraordinary (Amarillo-Globe News), Isabelle Demers has enraptured critics, presenters, and audience members worldwide for her spell-binding performances. A native of Québec and a graduate of the Juilliard School, Ms. Demers is Organ Professor and Head of the Organ Program at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Her recital for the joint International Society of Organbuilders American Institute of Organbuilders convention in 2010 so enchanted the audience that she left the entire congress in an atmosphere of Demers fever. Her concert at the 2010 national convention of the American Guild of Organists, in Washington, D.C., was received with great acclaim not only by critics, who deemed it one of the most outstanding events of the convention (The American Organist), but also by the standing-room-only audience, which called her back to the stage five times. She has appeared in recital at the cathedrals of Cologne and Regensburg in Germany, St. Paul s Cathedral and the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Royal Opera House of Muscat (Oman), Melbourne Town Hall (Australia), as well as major universities and concert halls in the United States, among them Disney Hall (Los Angeles), the Kimmel Center (Philadelphia), the Wanamaker Organ (Philadelphia), Yale University, Benaroya Hall (Seattle), Spivey Hall (Georgia), and the Spreckels Pavillion (San Diego). Highlights of her 2015-16 season include performances at Overture Hall (Madison, WI), Stambaugh Auditorium (Youngstown, OH), a return engagement at the Royal Festival Hall, and the dedication of the new organ at Beijing s South Cathedral. In the summer of 2016 she appeared in recitals in Canada, Germany, Great Britain, and China. Ms. Demers is in continual demand by her colleagues as witnessed by repeat performances for regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists (Minneapolis, 2008; Washington D.C., 2010; Indianapolis, 2015; Houston, 2016), the joint convention of the Institute of Organ Builders and International Society of Organbuilders (Montréal, 2010), and the Royal Canadian College of Organists (Toronto, 2009; Kingston, Ontario, 2016). On a recent broadcast of Pipedreams, presenter Michael Barone featured the Fugue from Reger s Op. 73, describing it as a masterful score, here masterfully played, and Ms. Demers as, definitely a talent to watch, to hear. Thierry Escaich Thierry Escaich is an internationally acclaimed composer, organist and improviser, who even plays a prominent role in the contemporary music creation. Considering the three facets of his art as bound together, he uses them to reflect his prolific inner world. Born in 1965, Thierry Escaich received enthusiastic recognition in 1990 for his early compositions, such as the saxophone concerto Le Chant des ténèbres (The Song of Darkness), and Ad ultimas laudes for mixed choir. Today, his work includes a hundred pieces known for their rejection of sterile experimentation, their hedonistic echo and their rhythmical fever. His music is internationally acknowledged by soloists such as Claire-Marie Le Guay, Éric Le Sage, Olivier Latry, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, as well as the Wanderer and Dali Trios, the Ysaÿe, Ludwig and Voce Quartets, the Sequenza 9.3 and A Sei Voci vocal ensembles, and Radio France s choir. His works have been performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Konzerthaus, and the Orchestre Philharmoniquede Radio France. Composing largely for his instrument (solo pieces, chamber music, two concertos, La Barque Solaire for organ and orchestra), Thierry Escaich is also open to all genres and forms, always investigating new universes of sound. His style ranges from the intimacy of Choral s Dream (2003) for piano and organ and Scènes de bal for string quartet to vast frescos such as the Chaconne (2000) and Vertiges de la croix (2004) for orchestra, Les Nuits hallucinées (The Hallucinated Nights) for mezzo-soprano and orchestra (2008), and Le Dernier Évangile (The Last Gospel), an oratorio for double choir, organ and orchestra (1999). Thierry Escaich has held the position of Professor of Composition and Improvisation at the Paris Conservatoire since 1992, where he has been awarded eight First Prizes. Since 1997 he has also been the organist for the St-Étienne-du-Mont church in Paris, succeeding Maurice Duruflé. He tours internationally as a concert organist, acclaimed everywhere for combining classic repertoire with his own compositions and improvisations. He has appeared in Tokyo, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Toronto, Berlin, Amsterdam, Birmingham, Budapest, Seville, and numerous French and international music festivals. His passion for cinema has led him to improvise on the piano and the organ, and to compose accompaniments for silent films such as Frank Borzage s L Heure suprême, commissioned by the Louvre in 1999. His numerous recordings speak for themselves and have received numerous awards. He has recently distinguished himself as an organist with Organ Spectacular (concert improvisations) and Tanz-Fantasie, organ and trumpet with Éric Aubier, and as a composer with recordings of Lettres mêlées (Trio Wanderer), Miroir d ombres (Gautier and Renaud Capuçon, Orchestre national de Lille) and Exultet (Sequenza 9.3). En inspirerande dag för dig som är ung organist eller som spelar piano och vill prova på orgel. Inga stora förkunskaper krävs. Dagen äger rum i Kungsholms kyrka, S:t Görans kyrka och Högalidskyrkan och bjuder på tre olika workshops, familjekonsert och gemensam lunch, specialvisning av Tyska kyrkans orgel m.m. Anne-Lise Lindberg Sjödin har, som kantor och orgelpedagog, mångårig erfarenhet av musikundervisning med barn och unga. Hennes stora intresse för barns musikaliska utveckling har resulterat i orgelskolan Orgelpuls. Metodiken är inriktad på att medverka till att elevens egen kreativitet och gestaltningsförmåga medvetandegörs och ökar. Att musicera tillsammans med eleven i en positiv anda är en av utgångspunkterna. Tomas Willstedt är organist i Lunds domkyrka sedan 1976, och han har en gedigen karriär som lärare och konstnär både i Sverige och utomlands. År 1992 vann han första priset i prestigefulla International Organ Improvisation Competition i Haarlem, Holland. Tomas Willstedt är även aktiv som tonsättare och har skrivit flera böcker och artiklar om orgelimprovisation. Bjørn Andor Drage är professor i orgelspel vid musikkonservatoriet vid Universitetet i Tromsø och vid Universitetet i Nordland. Han har bred erfarenhet som musiker, kompositör och lärare och fick flera utmärkelser för sitt arbete inom musiklivet, till exempel Nordland fylkes kulturpris i 2007 och Bodø Bys Kulturpris i 2013. Bjørn Andor Drage Bjørn Andor Drage kommer från Saltdal i Nordland/Norge och har sin utbildning från Norges Musikkhøgskole. Han har tidigare jobbat som lektor i kyrkomusik vid Trøndelag musikkonservatorium och varit dirigent och konstnärlig ledare för Bodø Sinfonietta samt jobbat som gästdirigent för Tromsø symfoniorkester och Vokal Nord. Han är professor vid musikkonservatoriet vid Universitetet i Tromsø och vid Universitetet i Nordland. Drage har bred erfarenhet som musiker, kompositör och lärare. Han fick flera utmärkelser för sitt arbete inom musiklivet, till exempel Nordland fylkes kulturpris i 2007 och Bodø Bys Kulturpris i 2013. Bjørn Andor Drage äger skivbolaget Euridice och var i sin tid med att sjösätta Bodø Internasjonale Orgelfestival. Cecilie Schilling Cecilie Schilling er utdannet sanger ved Norges musikkhøgskole og Høgskolen for teater, opera og musikal ved Universitetet i Gøteborg. Hun Har jobbet som frilans sanger siden 2002 og har gjort en rekke konserter og forestillinger. Musikkteater for barn, konsertturneer både for barn og voksne og hun har de siste 6 årene hatt en av hovedrollene i Sommermusikalen Den gode hensigt. I 2016 hadde bestillingsverket ØRRET I SKJORTE (Rune Klakegg og Brit Bildøen) urfremføring i foajeen på Teater Ibsen med Cecilie som en av de to hovedrollene. Høsten 2017 skal hun turnere med kirkespillet Katharinas stemmer sammen med organist og komponist Bjørn Andor Drage i regi av Kattas figurteater. ORGANSPACE 2017 17

Andrés Cea Galán Andrés Cea Galán (Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, 1965) is interested in musical performance using early instruments, including organ, clavichord and harpsichord. After completing studies in his country, he attended Jean Boyer s organ class in Lille (France) and also studied with Jean- Claude Zehnder at the Schola Cantorum in Basel (Switzerland). As a musician, he also recognizes the influences of Willem Retze Talsma, Berhard Brauchli and Françoise Lengellé, among others. He is equally interested in musicological research, especially on keyboard music as well as on the history, technics and aesthetics of the organ in Spain. His articles and books on this subjects are being considered valuable contributions at the knowledge of Hispanic organ culture. He has completed his doctorate in musicology at Madrid Complutense University with a dissertation on Spanish tablatures. As a music editor, he has published Francisco Fernandez Palero s keyboard music (Edition Gaus) and Sebastian Raval s ricercari (Patrimonio Musical Español, Fundación Caja Madrid). As a soloist, he has made various recordings for radio and several CDs for Lindoro, Almaviva, Aeolus and Tritó labels. He has also collaborated with Ensemble Plus Ultra conducted by Michael Noone on the recordings of Tomás Luis de Victoria s music (Universal). As a result of his updated approach to the performance, especially of Spanish keyboard music, he is frequently invited both for playing and teaching in Spain as well as all over Europe, México, South-America and Japan. He worked as an organbuilder too, at Gerhard Grenzing s workshop in Barcelona, being now reclaimed as an organ adviser by several cultural institutions in Spain. He is teaching at Conservatorio Superior de Música de Seville (Spain) and is also the director of the Andalusian Organ Academy. Joris Verdin Joris Verdin is both organist and musicologist. This combination is the reason for his preference of reviving forgotten music at the same time as he creates contemporary compositions. He has recorded over forty CDs as a soloist, spanning many musical eras and styles. After various activities as accompanist, arranger and producer he now focuses on the organ as well as the harmonium and has become internationally reputed as a specialist. He teaches the organ at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and is professor at the University of Leuven, Belgium. Master classes, musical editions and articles are an important part of his activities. Amongst them, the first complete edition of César Franck harmonium works and the first handbook of harmonium technique. The Spanish town Torre de Juan Abad (Ciudad Real) appointed Joris Verdin as honorary organist of the historical organ built by Gaspar de la Redonda in 1763. Obtained Diapason d Or (and Event of the month ) (France) and Cecilia-award (Belgian Press) in 2001 for his Franck organ works recording. A compilation of his organ works was recorded in 1998 (RIC 233442) and reissued in 2014. Musician of the year of the Flanders Festival 2002. Artistic adviser and inauguration of the Liszt orgue-piano in Vienna, 2005. Since 2007, after inaugurating the restored Cavaillé-Coll organ 1864, artistic leader of the Voix Célestes Program at the Fondation Royaumont, France. Obtained Le meilleur Widor by ClassiqueInfo for his recording of Widor s symphonies I-IV. In 2011 he received the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. The November 2011 issue of the American Record Guide van november 2011 puts it this way: Verdin, the apparent Dean of harmonium players, certainly knows how to get the most from the harmonium. In March 2012, his recording of Lefébure-Wely s Suites pour Harmonicorde was honoured with the Diapason d Or (French musical press). In September 2012 his recording of organ music by Willaert, in collaboration with the Capilla Flamenca, received Choc de la Musique, Diapason d Or, Klara Prize (Flemish Radio) and Cecilia-award. 2014: Diapason d Or for the Guide des Instruments de Musique in collaboration with musicians from the Ricercar Label. 2015: Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik for the DVD César Franck, Father of the Organ Symphony, with a substantial contribution by Joris Verdin on performance practice; artistic director of the Gothenburg International Organ Academy. Jane Parker-Smith Described as the Martha Argerich of the organ, Jane Parker-Smith is internationally recognised by the critics and public alike for her musicianship, virtuosity, entertaining programmes and electrifying performances. An innate interpretative ability, prodigious technique and flair for tonal colour are the hallmarks that make Jane Parker-Smith one of the most sought-after organists in the world. Her studies at the Royal College of Music in London were crowned with a number of prizes and scholarships, including the Walford Davies Prize for organ performance. After a further period of work with the eminent concert organist Nicolas Kynaston, a French government scholarship enabled her to complete her studies in Paris with the legendary blind organist Jean Langlais, perfecting the knowledge and understanding of twentieth-century French organ music for which she is today internationally renowned. She made her London debut at Westminster Cathedral at the age of twenty, and two years later made her first solo appearance at the BBC Promenade Concerts in the Royal Albert Hall. She has since performed in concert halls, cathedrals and churches throughout the world. She has recorded a wide range of solo repertoire. In addition, she has collaborated with the renowned Maurice André in a duo recording of music for trumpet and organ. She has performed numerous times on radio and television with special feature programmes on the BBC, German and Swiss television. Highlights in her concert career have been performances in major venues and international festivals in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. Jane Parker-Smith s extensive concerto repertoire has brought her performances with many leading orchestras, including the BBC Symphony and the BBC Concert Orchestras, the London Symphony, the London Philharmonic and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, the Philharmonia, the City of Birmingham Symphony, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Athens State Orchestra and the Prague Chamber Orchestra. She has worked with conductors of the stature of Sir Simon Rattle, Serge Baudo, Carl Davis, Vernon Handley, Matthias Bamert and Richard Hickox. Nathan Laube A star among young classical musicians, concert organist Nathan Laube has quickly earned a place among the organ world s elite performers. In addition to his busy performing schedule, he serves as Assistant Professor of Organ at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Recent performances by Nathan Laube include major venues spanning four continents. Highlights were his festival appearances at the 300th Anniversary festival of the 1714 Silbermann organ in the Freiberg Cathedral (Germany), Lahti Organ Festival (Finland), Dresden Music Festival (Germany), Orléans Organ Festival (France), and at America s 2015 Max Reger Festival. Performances for conventions and conferences are frequent, and in 2015 Nathan Laube was a featured performer at the national convention of the Organ Historical Society. He has two new CD recordings available: the Stephen Paulus Grand Concerto recorded with the Nashville Symphony, and a solo recital recorded in the Stadtkirche Nagold, Germany. As a recipient of a William Fulbright Grant, Nathan Laube spent the 2010-2011 academic year studying with Michel Bouvard and Jan Willem Jansen at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse where he earned Prix de Spécialisé with the mention Très Bien and Féliciations du Jury, in addition to the Prix François Vidal from the city of Toulouse.
