ELECTRICITY AND BIOFUELS SYNERGIES AND COMPETITION Patrik Klintbom Conny Börjesson 19 April 2018 Research Institutes of Sweden RISE Viktoria

Some basic points to start the discussion Gasoline and diesel has been around for a long time Introducing alternatives take time No single alternative can replace gasoline and diesel On a macro system level both biofuels and electricity are needed In some areas they will complement each other In some areas they will compete The question is where we find the balance given the things that matter over time Cost Environmental and social sustainability Regulations and legislative issues Societal acceptance and political will Etc 4
Why more electrical powertrains? Most energy efficient Electricity from Battery Fuel cell/hydrogen or other fuels Electrified road with electricity direct from the grid Strong grid and low electricity price in Sweden Clean electricity in Sweden As electricity improves emissions decrease without changes to vehicles. 5
Energy content of fuels and battery Fuel Cryogenic Or battery Pressure (bar) 1 5 200 350 700 Vehicles carry their lunch with them Diesel DME LNG - CNG 61 (-163 C) 100 > > > > 0,17 55 > > > 0,10 0,5 21 37 73 Effective volume will be restricted in case of high pressure or cryogenic tanks Energy efficiency of powertrains impacts range Hydrogen 23 (-253 C) 0,03 0,20 5,8 7,7 13 Battery (Li-ion) 3 6
Some recent scenarios from IEA IEA Scenario see strong growth in both electricity and biofuels in their 2 degree C scenario Conclusion is that both are needed. In addition energy efficiency and reduced consumption is essential 7

Project results 20-FIFTY Project MAKROEKONOMISKA EFFEKTER AV EN FOSSILBRÄNSLE-OBEROENDE FORDONS- FLOTTA I SVERIGE, Study by RISE Viktoria Övergripande slutsats Det går att nå målen! Mycket snabb uppskalning av användning av ny teknik och nya drivlinor behövs Drop in-biobränsle behövs för att påverka befintlig fordonsflotta For more information contact Mats Williander or Ann-Charlott Mellqvist at RISE Viktoria 9
New investments vs protection of historic investments Some examples of energy carriers in the protection of historic investments domain So called drop-in fuels like HVO and FT-Diesel Biogas to some extent New developments Electromobility Methanol/DME Strong interest in protecting historic investments Oil refining facilities Combustion engines Biogas upgrading Etc Scientific data supports that new developments may have significantly better performance Energy efficiency and GHG savings Yields of useful energy 10
Conclusions, final statements Both biofuels and electricity are needed but not all. Strong interest to keep current investments A common goal to significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels and reduce dependence Electromobility suits best where range requirements are limited For long distance travel biofuels are most important until biofuels and electrification complements each other 11
