Examinations... Det var både givande och utmanande att studera antropologi på Köpenhamns universitet. Skillnaden låg bland annat i att man läste två kurser om 7.5 ECTS (motsvarande högskolepoäng) parallellt, medan jag tidigare vid Uppsala Universitet bara läst en kurs i taget. Dessa kurser var dessutom på högre nivå än de kurser i antropologi jag läst tidigare. På flera av kurserna var det fler masterstudenter än kandidatstudenter, och nivån var märkbart högre på både undervisningen och diskussionerna. Varje kurs examinerades med dels uppgifter under hela kursens gång (grupparbeten, presentationer, bloggar etc.) samt en slutgiltig uppsats på ca tecken (motsvarande sidor). Jag läste dessutom en kurs i danska på 7.5 ECTS som sträckte sig över hela terminen. Danskan var en rolig kurs och elever liksom lärare var mycket engagerade. Jag kan starkt rekommendera att läsa det språk som talas i det land man gör sitt utbyte i. Även om alla kurser jag läste var intressanta och lärarna duktiga så skulle jag avråda en från att söka så många kurser på samma gång, risken är att man inte klarar alla om man inte är van vid den arbetstakten. För mig var det som att gå upp i 250% studietakt eftersom jag läste 4 kurser (2 åt gången) + danska under hösten, där alla kurser dessutom var på högre nivå än vad jag var van vid. Det hjälpte att ha bra kontakt med läraren via ex. mejl, och de flesta lärarna var väldigt behjälpliga och empatiska. Datorer och andra faciliteter fanns på alla campus och på samhällsvetenskapliga campuset (där jag läste) fanns det en väldigt bra lunchrestaurang med buffé varje vardag. 2 Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Det var en intressant upplevelse att åka på utbyte. Första dagarna kändes det som att man fortfarande var på semester. Inte förrän man satt i skolbänken förstod man att det var allvar, att detta skulle bli ens vardag under hel termin. Det var först en lite utmanande tanke men efter ett tag kom man in i det. Jag upplevde Köpenhamn som en väldigt välkomnande och trevlig stad i allmänhet, med en vänlig, uppsluppen och öppensinnad atmosfär. Det tog inte lång tid att känna sig hemmastad. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Jag bodde som inneboende i en ort utanför Köpenhamn som heter Dragör. Det tog ca minuter att ta sig in till stan via buss och metro. Jag trivdes väldigt bra med både min roommate och min hyresvärd. En bör välja boende beroende på vilken typ av person man är. Jag gillar att ha det rent och snyggt runt mig så det passade bra att dela boende med lite färre människor där gemensamma utrymmen som kök och badrum alltid lämnades i fint skick. Ibland gäller det att ha lite tur också. Jag fick min bostad förmedlad via housing foundation. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Jag klarade mig mer än väl på de studiemedel + det Nordplus-stipendium jag fick till mitt förfogande, trots att det dök upp en del oväntande utgifter. Jag kunde bl.a. till och med åka på en ganska spontan resa till Island under min vistelse i Danmark. Min hyra var billigare än den jag har i Uppsala, även om jag behövde betala mer för transport. Men gör man upp en budget så borde det inte vara några problem. Danmark har ungefär samma priser som i Sverige. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Jag deltog inte särskilt mycket i aktiviteter arrangerade av universiteten utan gjorde mycket annat själv och med vänner istället. Förutom att studera besökte jag spelning, muséer, caféer och restauranger samt barer/ klubbar, samt praktiserade en del bikram yoga de första två månaderna. Jag träffade mina mentorer en gång men då var det redan mitt i terminen så jag var inte riktigt i behov av att bli introducerad till staden osv. Your exchange on the whole 17. I stort var det en lärorik och kul upplevelse att åka på utbyte. Jag känner att jag utvecklats både akademiskt och som person under min tid i Köpenhamn, och att jag växt av de erfarenheter - både bra och mindre bra- jag har därifrån. Man lär sig att klara sig själv på ett annat sätt när man är långt borta från familj och vänner, och man samlar på sig nya perspektiv. 3 lång tid lockat mig som stad så det har varit en fin upplevelse att få bo där. Jag kan starkt rekommendera andra studenter att göra ett utbyte. Några tips är att försöka hitta bostad i tid, samt hålla koll på sina värdesaker (!) då det finns en del ficktjuvar speciellt i större städer. Approval 18. Examinations... The structure of the education at Syddansk Universitet is different from Uppsala Universitet in the sense that you take multiple courses (usually 3) at the same time, and the semester ends in about a month when you write all your exams. The exams in themselves were also quite different, with many being a half-hour oral examination. I found the courses I took (International Organizations Security Communities and Human Security and the Building of Peace) to all have a high standard, with very relevant course material and filed trips, and good professors with experience both from academia and the real world, and would therefore recommend all three courses. The classes were about students in size, so it was possible to get good contact with both the professors and other students, although there were hardly no Danish students in the classes I took, maybe because they prefer courses taught in Danish and not English... So from my experience, it was easier to get to know other international students than local ones, since there was not too much interaction between the different spheres. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Before classes started, there was about a day of orientation, where most practical and administrative things were covered (how to apply for residency, how to open a bank account, etc.) and we got a tour of the campus. After that, classes started and for exchange students not taking first year courses quite a bit of general course information felt missing (how the courses are structured in general, how the library worked, etc) but most of the professors and other students were approachable Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 155 av 396

5 so the information was not hard to find. There were also some (non-academic) orientation activities organized by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) for all international students. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Arriving to the accommodation was very smooth as each residence had an accommodation mentor who was at the location to meet you when you arrived and was available to help and answer questions at any time throughout the semester. This was the same for all the residencies. I lived in an apartment complex, called Birkeparken, where I shared a four-bedroom apartment with three other international students. It was located about a 30min bike ride from the main campus and 25min bike ride from the city center. And by bike is how most students (and people in general) got around there, although there were good bus-connections for the rainiest of days. This accommodation was quite good, since it meant sharing a bathroom with just one other student and a kitchen with three others. During my stay, there were a few incidents both in the apartment and in the building complex, but they were dealt with relatively quickly and well since the janitors/building managers were very helpful. The one thing that made me choose this accommodation rather than the more usual dorm-style accommodations was for the reason that when you moved in you got a kitchen box filled with pots and pans and all those things you might need in a kitchen but don t want to bring with you. And when you leave, you can return the box with all or just some of the (used but clean) things to get a refund back. For staying just a semester, I found this to work out well since I didn t want to invest in a whole kitchen setup for such a short time period. If a kitchen box and a fair bit of daily bike exercise is a priority, I would recommend Birkeparken. But if you would rather stay closer to the city center and/or the university, most of the dorm-style accommodations would be a better choice. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Living in Odense, I used much less money than living in Uppsala. My accommodation cost almost half of what I payed in Uppsala, and food at grocery stores is also cheaper than in Sweden. And if you enjoy going out for a drink at night, the alcohol is considerably cheaper than in Sweden, with many bars aimed at student budgets. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? ESN (mentioned previously) organized many different activities for all international students, from weekly meetups at a bar in town to weekend trips to all parts of Denmark. The city scene of Odense is also very much alive, with everything from music festivals (there were two different ones in September) to a Christmas market and a weekly fresh produce market. If you like literature, the whole city pretty much revolves around the author H.C. Andersen, who was from Odense. Other free time can be spent at the university pool (free for students) or at the gym (at a good monthly membership price), or during the warmer months by biking to the beaches close by. Museology and Designhistory 9. Level of studies at the exchange university Undergraduate 10. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Cultural entrepreneurship 11. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 2 Studies 12. Tell us about your studies on your exchange. If you are stuck for ideas you can for exemple write about: The differences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... The academic level was at the same level as at Uppsala University. However, the lectures were fewer and longer. One 3h lecture per course a week. As a result the lectures were experienced as a bit harder to follow, on the other hand it gave me 3 reading days a week, which made it easy to get through all the course litterature in time. I would highly recomend the study of museology for other students. It was both educative and entertaining, and gave me a great perspective on the museum institution through history and today. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. I felt very welcome in Copenhagen and had no problems settling in the city nor at the University. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I found an appartment through friends, and was very pleased with my living situation. It can be quite challanging to find housing in Copenhagen, therefore i recomend future exhange students to start house hunting as early as possible. Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? I payed 4000 DKK/month, which is quite reasonable. I do not have CSN, but Lånekassen (Norwegian CSN) which was more than adequate. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? I used a lot of time visiting the different museums, art halls and galleries in Copenhagen - they have a great selection. I also volounteered for different festivals which was a great way to get know new people. I also got a spare time job at a Literature house that I enjoyed ver much. Your exchange on the whole 17. I am very happy that I went for an exchange year. I learned a lot both in and out of school and got to know a lot of great people. I highly recomend exchange at the University of Copenhagen.
