Examinations... I Australien läser man flera kurser parallellt under en termin. I Adelaide motsvarar fyra kurser heltid och kurskoderna ger en fingervisning om vilken årsnivå en kurs är på beroende på kurskodens startsiffra. Varje kurs har en föreläsning och en tutorial vilket är en lektion i mindre grupp med uppgifter till varje vecka. Under terminen samlar man på sig poäng genom olika uppgifter och kurserna avslutas med en tenta eller en stor uppsats. Uppsatserna lämnas in innan tentaperiodens början vilket gör att man har kortare tid på sig och de som hade enbart uppsatser var superstressade i slutet, men var klara tidigare än oss andra som hade en veckas SWOT-week som är en pluggvecka och sen två tentaveckor. Det var dock kul att vara kvar de sista veckorna, så det var ingen nackdel, men vill man underlätta för sig själv och kan välja fritt bland kurserna kan man fördela så att man har någon uppsats och några tentor så blir det lite mindre stressigt i slutet. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Terminen jag pluggade i Adelaide var vi sju stycken som kom från Uppsala mer eller mindre samtidigt. Vi bodde första veckan på Sjukhuset, det tillfälliga boendet som skolan anordnar. Då vi kom på vintern och det inte finns någon värme inomhus i Australien var det extremt kallt därinne och ganska omysig sjukhusmiljö. Därför är det nog trevligare att bo på ett hostel första veckan. Ingen av oss hade ordnat boende innan då det boendet är betydligt dyrare än vad man kan hitta själv. Det är inte svårt att hitta någonstans att bo, men svårt att hitta något bra när man kommer helt ny Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 106 av 396

Men man vill gärna bo centralt då bussarna bara går en natt i veckan och annars slutar gå vid tolv- halv ett. Efter tre-fyra dagar hade vi alla hittat något, men ska man leta själv är det bra att vara där lite innan introduktionsveckan plus att åtminstone vi var extremt jetlaggade och sov dåligt första veckan. Introduktionsveckan som skolan ordnar är mest informativ och går ut på att man går på olika föreläsningar. Sen finns det några få faddrar och några aktiviteter ordnas som filmvisning, fika och pubkväll, men det blir väldigt opersonligt då det är för alla utbytesstudenter och internationella studenter. Det är väldigt långt från en nollning i Uppsala! De roligare aktiviteterna börjar senare när utbytesföreningen håller sina arrangemang. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Vi letade alltså boende när vi väl var på plats. Vi svarade på annonser och åkte och tittade på ett par ställen. Jag bodde tillsammans med en annan tjej från Uppsala och två brasilianska tjejer i ett hus ca 10 minuter med buss från skolan. Huset var ett bostadshus som de gjort om till mer eller mindre studentkorridor så vi hade varsitt stort rum och delat kök och badrum. Som sagt så vill man gärna på så centralt som möjligt i Adelaide (och annars gärna åt strandhållet, vilket vi inte gjorde). Ett alternativ är också att bo vid stranden, men då har man minuter in till stan och skolan, så det är en avvägning. Är man där deras vårtermin är det också för kallt för att bada ungefär halva tiden så då är det roligare att vara nära stan. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? Hyran är dyrare i Australien än hemma medan mat är ungefär samma, men då är också Adelaide billigare än de andra stora städerna i Australien som är betydligt dyrare. Sedan vill man ju såklart åka på utflykter och resa på det två veckor långa lov man har och/eller efter/innan. Så för att bara leva klarar man sig bra på CSN, även inklusive en hel del utflykter, men allt beror ju på hur mycket man vill göra och hur mycket man vill resa! Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Det var främst utbytesföreningen som anordnade de roliga aktiviteterna som pubrunda, bal, surfcamp och vintur, men de utflykterna går också att ordna själv eftersom de går via företag som anordnar turerna, medan den internationella föreningen (det går mycket internationella studenter, främst från Kina på universiteten i Australien) ordnade en del temafester. Under sommaren ska det också vara mycket festivaler i Adelaide, men det märkte ju inte vi av. Universitet har också en massa klubbar man kan gå med i för att till exempel utöva en idrott. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. Att åka på utbyte är en otroligt häftig erfarenhet och det blir vad man gör det till. Det mesta handlar inte om platsen utan de människor man möter. Adelaide är inte ett jättespännande stad men att det är så litet gör att man, precis som i Uppsala, springer in i människor man känner när man går runt på stan. Mycket är likt Sverige så det är lätt att känna sig hemma. Oavsett vart man hamnar och vad man gör så kommer man att uppleva och lära sig massor, både om sig själv, andra människor och kulturer, språk och skolmässigt. Australien är också ett häftigt land med stora variationer inom landet så reser man runt får man uppleva otroligt olika saker. Har man chansen och möjligheten att åka på utbyte, oavsett vart i världen man får åka, tycker jag att man ska göra det. Det kommer att gå upp och ner ibland när man är borta, men man kommer aldrig att ångra sig och säkerligen drömma sig tillbaka då och då! Approval 18. Examinations... Lärarna var alla kunniga och duktiga, särskilt på att föreläsa. Något som jag gillade med mina kurser var att det var mycket olika examinationsformer som kombinerades. Research proposals, discussion papers och längre essäer är exempel på de många olika, mestadels skriftliga, sätt man examinerades på. För mig passade det bra och jag tyckte det adderade lite nödvändig utmaning till mina studier att behöva skriva mycket på akademisk engelska, för i övrigt tyckte jag nästan att deras b-kurser var lite väl lätta om man jämför med i Uppsala. Relationen lärare - elev tyckte jag var nästan exakt som i uppsala, inga konstigheter med andra ord. Jag läste två kurser som var väldigt bra, i statskunskap respektive utvecklingsstudier: Decoding China och Rights and Development. Min absoluta sämsta kurs var Global Environmental Politics som kändes väldigt oakademisk och oproffsig, sitt intressanta kursnamn till trots tyvärr. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Man blev mött på flygplatsen, fick en massa bra informationsblad och körd till sitt temporära boende så fort man kom till adelaide. Det kändes väldigt proffsigt. Första dagarna var det massa infomöten på skolan och sen följde en orientation week med lite roliga aktiviteter samt rundvisning på skolan, vilket var bra för att lära känna både nytt folk och sin nya skola. Do you have any tips for future students? Universitetets temporära boende på Royal Adelaide Hospital var tyvärr inget att ha, skulle rekommendera att bo å hostel istället första veckan. Bostad är lätt att hitta inom en vecka och beror mest på hur petig man är med location, renlighet/fräschet och de människorna man ska dela med. Jag bodde under min tid i två superfräscha hus i förorter nära stan, inneboende med andra människor. Fungerade väldigt bra och kostade cirka $ i veckan vilket man nog får räkna med att lägga. Rekommenderar alla att bo i centrum (kallas för CBD) eller på gångavstånd från universitetet/stan. Förorterna är rätt fula, dödstrista (finns inget att göra där ute) och dessutom är kollektivtrafiken ganska dålig samt slutar gå på kvällen. Detta betyder att du både har roligare och sparar pengar på att bo i stan (inget busskort eller dyra taxiresor hem efter du vart ute). Dock är spårvagnslinjen ganska schyst och gratis på vissa sträckor så området Thebarton (ligger längs spårvagnslinjen, nära universitetet)) kan jag tex. rekommendera, där finns även lite barer och kaféer. Andra ställen jag kan rekommendera att bo i, förutom CBD, är North Adelaide eller nära gatan The Parade. Skulle INTE rekommendera universitets boende Urbanest, galet dyrt för det man faktiskt får + att det som sagt faktiskt inte är svårt att fixa eget boende nere på plats. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Hyran var något dyrare men tyckte Csn räckte fint ändå. Mat och alkohol(vin iaf!) är något billigare än i Sverige så det jämnar ut sig. Rekommenderar alla att ta med extra pengar för att resa runt i Australien, finns mycket fint att se! Jag försökte söka lite jobb, mest på barer, men var nog lite för sent ute (sök jobb så fort du fått bostad om du tänkt jobba ihop lite resekassa där nere, annars hinner alla andra studenter ta dom schysta jobben!) och jag var nog lite för petig/selektiv i vilka ställen jag sökte jobb på. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Universitetet anordnade lite utflykter som var roliga, bland annat wine tours och surfresor. Deras fester var däremot inte mycket att hänga i granen. Men eftersom det är så många internationella studenter i Adelaide finns det alltid massa roliga hemmafester att gå på + att det nästan varje helg är fest på studentboendet Urbanest mitt i stan. Gå dit och mingla! Annars kan jag rekommendera Barossa Valley, Mclaren Vale, Hahndorf, och Kangaroo Island som bra resmål nära Adelaide. Mount lofty med utsikt över hela staden är också värt en dagsutflykt! Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. 6 Enskilda enkäter för Exchange report/utbytesrapport att Adelaide var världens roligaste stad, lite för liten och inte så mycket nischade grejer. Men att bo i Australien en tid, få jobba kontinuerligt på sin engelska, möta människor från hela världen samt se sig om i ett så fint land som Australien gör på det hela taget min utbytestermin till en toppenupplevelse som jag skulle rekommendera till alla. Och självklart, res res res! Victoria och New South Wales är jättefina delstater och helt annorlunda från South Australia. Avstånden är långa i Australien men att bila runt är både billigt (låga bensinkostnader) och extremt praktiskt (bra vägnät i alla riktningar) + många av sträckorna är värda den tid det tar (särskilt Adelaide till Melbourne via Great Ocean Road). 7 Hej, Jag heter Amanda Monell och jag studerade en termin vid University of Adelaide under hösten För närvarande läser jag terminskurs åtta på juristprogrammet och jag hade alltså studerat i sju terminer (exklusive Statskunskap A, en termin) vid Uppsala universitet när jag åkte till Adelaide. I Australien studerade jag Statskunskap B (fyra stycken andraårskurser). På det hela taget upplevde jag att studierna på University of Adelaide var jämförliga med studier vid Uppsala universitet. Det var fina och välanpassade lokaler, bra lärare och det var bra ordnat med tillgång till datorer. Jag tyckte att de kurser som jag läste höll en förhållandevis hög nivå genomgående under terminen och det var relativt mycket att göra. Den stora skillnaden mot att studera i Uppsala var att man studerade samtliga kurser parallellt och således inte en kurs i taget. Det tyckte jag var en av de största utmaningarna eftersom att de olika kurserna inte samspelade eller var anpassade till varandra. Ett av mina största misstag var att jag inte tänkte på detta vid valet av kurser. Jag valde exempelvis kurser som alla hade stora uppsatser på slutet av terminen istället för att även välja kurser med exempelvis tentamen som slutexamination. Jag tror att det är väldigt klokt att man noggrant studerar examinationsformer samt när dessa ligger i tiden innan man väljer kurser. En sak som var bra var med Adelaides system att man kunde lägga upp sitt schema själv. Jag hade exempelvis inget schemalagt på onsdagar och fredagar vilket jag uppskattade även om de andra dagarna naturligtvis blev längre. En annan bra sak med University of Adelaide var att samtliga föreläsningar spelades in och man kunde därför titta på dem online vilket underlättade om två kurser krockade. Under terminen hade jag en tutorial och en till två föreläsningar i veckan i respektive kurs. Det var därmed mer schemalagd tid än vad jag är van vid. Tutorials fungerar precis som ett seminarium, man är en mindre grupp som tillsammans med en lärare diskuterar vissa frågor. Under dessa tillfällen blev man även betygsatt för sin aktivitet. Det var därutöver relativt många olika moment som man blev betygsatt på vilket är bra på ett sätt eftersom att man då ges fler chanser att prestera men jag föredrar nog ändå att ha färre examinationer som är värda mer poäng. Jag tyckte exempelvis att det var svårt att veta hur man skulle fördela sin tid

8 mellan två uppsatser som skulle vara lika långa men där en av dem var värd 40 procent medan den andra var värd 20 procent. När jag anlände till Adelaide bodde jag på det tillfälliga boendet som skolan hade ordnat, det var verkligen ett stort misstag. Det var ett gammalt sjukhus (som kändes som ett fängelse). Jag kom dit i mitten av juli och då var det relativt kallt i Adelaide. På dagarna var det runt sju grader och på natten sjönk det mot nollan. Dessutom var det väldigt kyliga vindar så det kändes ännu kallare. Husen är dessvärre inte gjorda för det klimatet och sjukhuset var verkligen inte det. Det saknades element och det blåste in kall luft från de dåligt isolerade fönsterna. Det fanns heller inget täcke på sjukhuset utan endast en tunn sjukhusfilt. Allt det här gjorde att första veckan blev väldigt tuff, dåligt med sömn är inte optimalt eftersom att det är så mycket som man måste fixa de första dagarna. Så mitt tips är att inte boka det tillfälliga boendet som skolan ordnar (som dessutom är väldigt dyrt) utan att istället själv boka ett tillfälligt boende för den första tiden samt att ta med varma kläder om man åker i juli. Det var inga svårigheter att hitta boende och det finns ett boendekontor med boenden som skolan har godkänt och därigenom hittade jag mitt boende. Jag bodde med en annan svensk tjej och två tjejer från Brasilien i ett hus som låg tio minuter från skolan med buss (Payneham) och för det betalade jag 165 dollar i veckan. Bussar gick hela tiden (även nattetid) så det var väldigt smidigt att ta sig till och från centrum. Jag skulle inte rekommendera att bo på skolans boenden, även om de har ett väldigt centralt läge så väger det inte upp nackdelarna. De är dyra, rummen är väldigt små och dessutom har de begränsat internet vilket kan vara jobbigt när man befinner sig så långt bort. Det anordnades en hel del aktiviteter för utbytesstudenter. Inledningsvis var det orientation week. Jag tyckte nog att den var lite av en besvikelse. Jag tror att den är anordnad med utgångspunkt från att man aldrig har bott hemifrån eller pluggat innan. Adelaide tar nämligen emot en hel del internationella studenter som avser att läsa hela sin utbildning i Australien och dessa studenter är också med under den här veckan. Information om hur en polis ser ut och att rött ljus betyder att man inte får gå över gatan kändes lite överflödig. O-week var dock bra för man träffade andra utbytesstudenter och dessutom var det bra att vara med på rundvandringen så att man fick en uppfattning om vart allting låg. Vissa föreläsningar om Australiensisk kultur och historia var även värda att gå på. Under terminens gång var det vidare flera fester och aktiviteter som anordnades för utbytesstudenter.

9 Vill man aktivera sig finns det många olika klubbar man kan gå med i. Alltifrån ölklubbar till sportklubbar. Att gå med i en klubb är även ett bra sätt att träffa Australiensare (så att man inte bara umgås med andra utbytesstudenter). Det anordnas även flera utflykter, såsom vinturer (det finns många vingårdar kring Adelaide), surfresor och kajakpaddling med delfiner. Ekonomiskt klarade man sig bra med CSN. Det beror såklart på hur mycket man betalar för boende men för mig räckte det bra. Prismässigt skulle jag i övrigt säga att det är ganska likt Sverige. Adelaide känns som en ganska liten stad. Det är lätt att ta sig överallt och centrum är väldigt koncentrerat så det är gångavstånd till allt. Jag tror att själva staden gör sig bäst på höstterminen (vår vårtermin) för då är det fortfarande varmt, det anordnas många festivaler och det finns många trevliga uteserveringar. Under vårterminen (vår höstermin) som jag åkte på är staden inte lika levande. Det började bli varmt först under slutet av oktober och jag tror verkligen att Adelaide gör dig bäst i värmen för det var väldigt tydligt att staden började få liv när sommaren närmade sig. Det kan tilläggas att det var en ovanligt kall vår när jag var där. Annars har Adelaide flera små guldkorn; mysiga barer, härliga marknader och trevliga restauranger. Närheten till stranden (40-60 min med buss) skulle jag också säga är ett stort plus, både Glenelg och Henley är jättemysiga små samhällen. Närheten till Adelaide Hills och alla vingårdar är också ett plus. Dessutom är det inte långt till Kangeroo Island vilket verkligen är ett potentiellt härligt resmål på lovet, med mängder av vilda kängurur, koalor, sälar, sjölejon och delfiner. Examinations... My studies during my exchange were exciting and in several ways different from back in Uppsala. Firstly, the courses I chose were courses in entrepreneurship and new ventures which are subjects you re not really able to study at Uppsala University. Secondly, these courses were all intensive courses and the style and tempo of them were completely different from what I m used to. Instead of, on a average, 3-4 lectures a week during the whole semester, they had a total of 6 days per course and each course were divided into two weeks with one month apart. In the beginning of the semester, the first intensive course started, it was from Monday to Wednesday and went on from 9 in the morning to about 15 each day. During a day, we had several lectures, workshops and tasks about the subject and also talked about the assignments of the course. The idea was to learn about the subject and then complete the assignments during the time we had between the first week and the second week of the course. All the courses had the same kind of assignments: one individual report, one group assignment, one exam and one presentation. The classes had between students and one lecturer and the subject made it all quite casual and upbeat, so the atmosphere was very friendly and it was easy to talk to the classmates as well as the lecturer. The teachers were qualified and skilled rhetoricians but unpretentious and helping, I was very pleased with all of them. The courses I studied were Foundations of Entrepreneurship, New Venture Marketing and New Venture Planning and I would recommend all of them to anyone even remotely interested in entrepreneurship and to anyone that could see themselves starting their own business. 11 I only took 3 courses since I dropped my forth, called Project Management for New Ventures. It was the last intensive to start and was of very poor quality compared to the others. It was extremely unorganized, which is ironic since it s about organization, and the lecturer was unfortunately not competent enough to teach the subject. The academic level of the courses was not really as high as the educational standard of Uppsala University but it might very well have been due to the kind of subjects i studied. Entrepreneurship is abstract and pretty far from an exact science. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. A representative from the uni met me at the airport since they offered that service and I asked for it. It was a student at the university that was working extra. He greeted me, handed me some papers and put me in a car with another student and told the driver to take us to the temporary accommodation. The temporary accommodation that the uni offered was okay. It was at the residential wing at the Royal Adelaide Hospital which is located near the uni. I read in a report from a previous student that she was displeased with it because of the long, dark hallways and the lack of social interaction. I can definitely see what she meant but it didn t bother me too much. The main problem was that you had to ask the reception for the key to the kitchen whenever you wanted to use it, and it had no pots and pans at all, since you were supposed to bring your own. I m not sure if I would have stayed there now that I know how it was, but at least it was close to the uni/city. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I had some trouble finding a place at first, but I am quite picky and could probably have found something sooner. But eventually I found a private accommodation in a suburb called Collage Park which is quite near the city and the uni. I rented a room in the house of an older fellow who had a 3 bedroom apartment. I was really surprised of the standard of the place compared to earlier places I had looked at. The cost wasn t too bad. I lived by myself there for 2 months and paid roughly 5000 kr a month during that time and the last months my girlfriend came and lived with me and we paid about 3700 kr each then. The rent is definitely higher in Australia than in Uppsala, and even Adelaide that is considered cheap is more expensive. I had some trouble with the temporary accommodation since they only offered one week of stay and I hadn t found a place during that time. When I went to the Accomodation Service at the Uni, they wasn t so accommodating about prolonging my stay for another week. Apparently you had to register with them and they had to see some proof that you were searching for a place if you wanted to stay another week. This info did I get the day I was supposed to check out which was quite irritating but fortunately I was able to stay yet another week. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Australia is even more expensive than Sweden in almost every aspect. Some prices are the same but most things is more expensive. Dining out, alcohol and public transportation is a bit cheaper though. 12 the study. But if you want to travel during or after your studies then you probably need some extra, either through earlier savings or part-time work during the semester. Free time 16. I tried to see as much as I could of the city every day. The beach in Glenelg is a minute tram-ride from the city so I was there quite a lot. The uni arranged activities in the beginning and some during the semester but it wasn t so much. They had at least one event for exchange students every week which was good, but I think they could have done it better in the aspect of organizing it and promoting it. Your exchange on the whole 17. It s hard to describe in words how it really affects you but the words usually used such as life-changing, non-forgettable, rewarding, educating and so much fun pretty much sums it up. Adelaide is a great city to be on exchange in because it feels like a large town, it s easy to get around and it feels like home after a short period of time. Australia has high standard when it comes to their education and the people and the country are amazing. I would recommend anyone going on exchange to apply for an Australian University. My tip is to make sure you find something you really want to study at the University you are applying to, ask people that have been in that city and try to get as much knowledge as possible about what you are choosing. We were 8 students from Uppsala University who were coming to Adelaide, and most of us booked the same hostel for the first few days. Even though I hadn t met any of the others before coming here, it was nice to know that we all stayed together at the same hostel and could discuss and help each other out with finding a more permanent place to live. I first searched some websites to find a room, for example flatmates and gumtree, though I knew most exchange students found their accommodation through those sites. I went to a few showings but didn t really feel like any of them suited me, and I m glad I didn t settle with one of those. One day I met a Swedish girl in a food court, she was here on a Working Holiday Visa and wasn t studying, but needed a roommate. We changed numbers and the next day I moved in. It s a great location i North Adelaide, takes me 20 minutes to walk to uni and the city, and there s a lot of restaurants and parks nearby. 15 other exchange students from Uppsala moved in there. Later on the girl I met moved out, so then I had the room for myself. Me and the other girl from Uppsala have a part of the house for ourselves we have our own bathroom with toilet, shower and laundry, and a small kitchen area with refrigerator and microwave, but we share a kitchen with some people living in the main house. I m really satisfied with my accommodation, couldn t have been better! My tip is to keep looking until you find something that feels right, do not settle with something because you are stressed and want to find something as soon as possible. Your finances 15. The cost for accommodation is a bit higher here than in Uppsala. When I first shared a room with another girl I paid 125 dollars a week, when she later moved out I paid 200 dollars instead. I think that s still a reasonable cost, the CSN money covered both rent, food and some other living expenses. I pay more in Uppsala but then I have my own apartment, here I share a part of a house with another Swedish girl, but share a kitchen with several others. I did not undertake any part-time work while studying here, I considered it but didn t feel like I had time for it. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? The studying took up quite some time, but when I had some free time I mostly hang out with my friends. Since I moved in with a Swedish girl who was working, and then another exchange student from Uppsala, the three of us hang out a lot. Whenever we got a few free days we traveled, or went on different tours. I didn t feel like the university arranged a lot of activities. The did have a few parties and pub-crawls that we went to. ESN arranged a few activities as well, for example a wine tour and kaiaking with dolphins. Since I found some friends early on, I wasn t that dependent on their activities. My exchange experience has been great. The time has gone by so fast, and there has been ups and downs of course. I feel lucky that I found great friends in my first weeks here and I have kept making friends this whole semester. The workload has been quite though, but that is because I chose to write my thesis here and chose to enroll in courses that were advanced. In Uppsala I m in my last year of my undergraduate but when I came here I wanted to challenge myself so I, after a discussion with the coordinator, enrolled in a specially advanced humanities course and a honors course even though I m not post-graduate. I don t regret doing this cause I ve learnt a lot during this semester, but it has demanded a lot of focus on the studies. I did however make sure to take time to travel as soon as I got the chance. Some friends and I traveled for two weeks over the mid semester break, I went to an outback tours for four days with some of the exchange students, and I have done some day activities as well. My tip is to make sure you take the time to really experience all aspects of the exchange. Examinations... I had four ongoing courses throughout the semester, which ended with two revision weeks without lectures etc followed with 1-2 weeks of exam period. Lecture and tutorial groups where pretty small, unfortunately many of the lecturers where not native english speakers. The relationship between students and teachers was pretty relaxed, I named them by their first name etc and most of them where happy to help out with whatever issues I might have had. Academic writing is very different compared to what I m as an engineer was used to from back home. Referencing is more important and personal reflection is not valued. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Everyone was very helpful and as it s one main campus area one can find everything there. They help you with finding accommodation, the help you finalizing the course application and time schedules. I started of at the hospital in Adelaide, you book a week for $200, its pretty bad and especially in winter as they don t use insulation as we know it in Sweden. During my first day I found a room on uni s webpage and thats where I ended up staying. I lived near the beach, about 10km from uni, together with an Aussie couple and their dog. I was lucky and got both electricity, (their own rain-)water and heating (nearly non-existing) included for only $140/week. This was perfect for me, got lots of friends in the street and a unique opportunity to learn proper english. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? Accommodation is in general a bit higher. Meat is a lot cheaper while some veggies and fruit are more expensive. Dairy and bread about the same. Did no part-time work as it wasn t economically needed. CSN was enough, I still managed to travel a bit by eating cheaply. Bought a bike to save travel money and to get exercise. Free time 16. There are lots of student clubs, but some are less organized than others. The range from things like language and meditation clubs to music and sports. 19 Please tell us a little bit about the picture/s. Wildlife in Oz is m amazing, not only because of kangaroos and koalas. In the outback one can find both camels and dingos, in the sea both sharks and dolphins. The landscape varies much, from flat dry land to mountainous tropical land. South Australia is the Wine region, which sure adds to the Australian experience. Endless beaches with everyday beautiful sunsets make good places to meet friends or for dates. Living in Australia is truly amazing! 21. Examinations... Studying in Australia is in many ways similar to studying in Sweden, but some aspects are different. The teacher-student relationship is similar to the one in Sweden (not that formal) and the size of the classes is similar too. I experienced that the level of studies is similar to the one in Uppsala, but that it is harder to get the highest grade here than it is in Sweden. The quality of the education vary from class to class, but generally it is the same standard as in Sweden. Studying social science I didn t have any final exams at the end of the semester, but instead shorter essays to write during the semester. This worked out good for me, and I didn t have to study as intensive as many friends studying science or engineering. In Adelaide you are enrolled in 4 courses of 3 units each as a full time student. Depending on the difficulties of these courses the workload can be hard sometimes, and it can be a good thing to mix more difficult courses with easier ones. I studied one course on master s level, two year 3-level, and one year 1-level, and I had a balanced workload! Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Arriving and settling in in Adelaide is easy, since it is a quite small city and therefore easy to get to know. The university have a pick-up service at the airport for arriving new students, I didn t use it personally but it might be good if you feel a bit lost when you arrive. 21 The first week in Adelaide we were a few Swedish students staying at the Glenelg Beach Hostel close to the beach, which I can recommend (if you arrive in February that is)! It was nice to live with familiar faces the first time, before uni starts and you get to know more students. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? The first week I stayed at a hostel, and looked for accommodation every day. It is rather easy to find accommodation in Adelaide, but if you want a good accommodation in a nice area and a nice house it is a bit more tricky. I joined flatmates.com.au and easyroommate.com.au which are good sites for finding avaliable rooms. In the end though I managed my accomodation via Gumtree, where I found a shared-house in North Adelaide for 175 dollars a week. The normal rent is between dollars, and as a rule the closer you live to the uni the more you pay. I can really recommend North Adelaide as an area: there are a lot of restaurants and cafes in the area, and there is still a walking distance to the city and to uni. A tips regarding accommodation is not to have anything settled before you get here, but maybe that you start ing a week or two before you get here to get showings earlier. It is also a good thing to meet all the people living in the house, to make sure that you all can get along well. I know some friends living at Urbanest and the accommodations managed by the uni, but I can really recommend finding your own accommodation since you often get it for less money and meet more diverse people than in Urbanest. It is more expensive in Adelaide compared to Uppsala, and I have full time CSN loans and saved money to use. I would say that it is hard to manage only on CSN, since you obviously want to travel a bit when in Australia. The rent is definitely more expensive than in Uppsala, and some food is also more expensive. Eating out however is cheaper than in Sweden, as well as clothes and electronics. I didn t undertake any part time job while in Australia. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? There is a lot to do in Adelaide, and the university is good arranging activities for international and exchange students. I arrived in February, which is in the beginning of the festival season in Adelaide, and there were loads of shows and events to attend to the first month. Make sure that you catch some of the shows at the Fringe Festival, and go to Womad for a day or two if you are into world music! I joined the university s Mountain Club, and went climbing once a week for a cheaper fee. The club also arranges a lot of trips around Adelaide for a smaller fee, which is a good way to explore the surroundings of Adelaide.
