Examinations... I chose to study the same subject on exchange as I did back home because I thought it would be interesting to compare both the subject matter and the teaching methods. Since I did not do a direct exchange with the school of law, there were quite few courses for me to choose from, but the ones I ended up taking were very interesting. I did a mix of first year and third year courses, although I was actually at my fifth and final year, in order to not have to study as much as usual. I had about four or five lectures/seminars per week and spent a few hours per day in the library. The teachers were very good, both knowledgeable and helpful. The method of examination was different from Uppsala in that we were not allowed to bring our books or notes to the exam. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. I arrived in Edinburgh a couple of days before the semester started in order to have time to settle in. I did not participate in any activities arranged by the school but simply arrived at my accommodation and met my flat mates. The first few days were spent walking around the city in order to learn how to find my way and locate the school, nearest supermarket etc, and to just get to know the city. Do you have any tips for future students? I lived in university accommodation which I was allocated after applying via my host university. The rent was quite expensive, although I only had an en suite room and shared a kitchen. Nevertheless I can definitely recommend university accommodation since I met my closest friends in the building (flat mates and friends of flat mates). I have heard horror stories about messy kitchens etc but I was in luck with my flatmates. The staff were also very helpful. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? The cost of living was similar to Sweden. I did spend a bit more money than back home, but that was mostly due to changes in the way of living, with eating out more, partying, travelling and so on. My rent was about 5000 SEK per month, which was quite much compared to my 4000 SEK rent in Uppsala. I did not undertake any part time work. Nevertheless, I found that CSN and the Erasmus scholarship was enough to live and travel. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? To my surprise, there were quite few activities for exchange students arranged by the university (at least that I was aware of). There were however weekend trips organised by the university that I went on and that I can definitely recommend. The university also has a lot of student run societies which are essentially clubs dedicated to a specific area of interest, which organize different activities. I was a member of the photographic society, which I was very happy with. Going to societies is a great way of getting to know other students who are not necessarily on exchange. I spent my free time exploring Edinburgh, travelling to other places in Scotland and just hanging out with friends. I had plenty of things to do to entertain myself and get my mind off studying. As a whole, my semester in Edinburgh was amazing. I loved the city and felt right at home from the beginning. I also met a lot of lovely people who I will keep in contact with in the future. My number one tip for students going on exchange is to make the most of your time and take the opportunity to do things that you would not do at home - dare to step out of your comfort zone. Examinations... Eftersom utbytet var på social science och på undergraduate nivå var jag tvungen att ta andra kurser än vad jag läser i Uppsala. Jag fick dock läsa en tredjedel av poängen på science department, vilket jag gjorde. De kurser jag valde där var tredjeårskurser. Eftersom jag inte har läst så mycket samhällsvetenskap sen innan var jag inte kvalificerad för så mycket annat än förstaårs-kurser på social science. Där läste jag en förstaårskurs (British economic and environmental history) och en andraårskurs (Sustainable development 2A) men som ändå var självstående. Kursnivån mellan de olika kurserna jag läste varierade väldigt. I undervisningstimmar var de två kurserna på science department lika stora som de på social science, och utöver dessa timmar la jag nog ner lika mycket tid på dessa, trots att de bara var 10 credits-kurser till skillnad från de på social science, där nästan alla kurser är 20 credits. Det kan kanske bero på att de var tredjeårskurser, men jag skulle tro att det beror främst på att det är ämnen i naturvetenskap. Läser man allt på science department har man alltså oftast 6 kurser samtidigt, vilket jag inte skulle rekommendera, då man tentar alla under en två-veckors period. 4 kurser gick absolut bra att ha samtidigt! Sämsta kursen jag läste var nog sustainable development. Den var ganska flummig (som sådana kurser ofta blir) och trots att det var ganska låg nivå på föreläsningarna satte de ganska höga krav på studenterna, vilket jag kan tycka är ganska dåligt. Bästa kursen jag läste var nog British economic and environmental history. Lite besviken på att den inte innehöll så mycket miljöhistoria, det var endast de 6 sista föreläsningarna eller så, men den var ändå väldigt intressant! 5 att få öva sig på att skriva något annat än labbrapporter! CAD-kursen är för mig en väldigt användbar kurs, många efterfrågar kunskaperna i arbetslivet. Jag kämpade en del med kursen, tyckte inte att det gick så bra, men fick ändå ett väldigt bra betyg i slutändan så kraven var nog mycket lägre än vad jag trodde. Den sista kursen om långvarig klimatförändring tog jag mest för att kunna läsa CAD-kursen och för att få ett schema som fungerade (Science department ligger ca 15 min med buss ifrån central campus, så jag behövde trixa en del med kurser för att kunna hitta ett schema som fungerade. Som tur var var båda kurserna på science department bara en gång i veckan (3 timmar per gång) vilket innebar att jag endast behövde åka dit två gånger i veckan). Det var en bra kurs, även om jag inte tyckte att det var så värst intressant. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. När vi kom dit visste jag inte vilka kurser jag skulle läsa, eller var vi skulle bo. Vi bodde på ett hostel som inte var det fräschaste och vi kände oss väldigt vilsna. Som tur var åkte jag ihop med en tjej som jag träffade på infomötet, det underlättade en hel del när man letade lägenhet och fick nej överallt. Det löste sig dock väldigt snabbt och vi flyttade in i en bra lägenhet två dagar senare. Kurser löste sig också så småningom. Det fanns mycket aktiviteter att gå på i början, men eftersom man får börja universitetet när man är 17 i Skottland så uppfattade vi många som omogna och stökiga på dessa event. Tips är att smyga sig in på postgraduate-eventen, de kollar inte alltid om man verkligen är postgraduate och vi tyckte människorna där var trevligare. Ta tiden till att lära känna mycket nya människor, alla är öppna och trevliga! Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Vår lägenhet var bra! Visst fanns det skavanker, man ska inte förvänta sig svensk standard, och man får vara beredd på att betala mer. Vi svarade på väldigt många annonser, säkert 100 stycken, vi letade först via agenturer och sedan började vi leta mer på gumtree.com. Det är svårt att få via agentur eftersom de har någon lag som gör att det blir dyrare att hyra ut kortare än 6 månader (för försäkringar och sånt) och de flesta agenturer håller bara på med långtidsuthyrning. Det man kan göra att söka på just short term lease, men då blir oftast hyran dyrare. Det vi gjorde, var att ta kontakt med de som skulle åka i vår och fråga om de skulle vara intresserade att ta över lägenheten i vår. Det var de, och ägaren till en lägenhet vi hittat på gumtree gillade idén mycket, eftersom det innebar att han kunde hyra ut lägenheten under hösten, bryta vårt kontrakt innan jul, hyra ut den över jul och nyår (det är tydligen en festival i Edinburgh då) och ta högre hyra, och sen få hyra ut den igen under våren. Detta gjorde det mycket lättare att hitta en bra lägenhet. De har också en lag som heter HMO, vilket är någon hälsosäkerhetlag som säger hur många orelaterade människor som får bo i lägenheten (alltså ej gifta, syskon, pojkvänner osv). Vi ville bo tre i lägenheten då hyran ändå var rätt saftig, och hyres värden sa att det var okej, om någon utav oss hittade en pojkvän som ville flytta in. Det kan privata hyresvärdar också vara flexibla med, det enda vi behövde göra var att tydligt informera hyresvärden om att det var en pojkvän som skulle bo med oss. Tips är också att kontakta tidigare studenter som varit på utbyte och fråga om de har någon kontakt till sitt gamla boende. Jag reste en del, gjorde allt jag ville och pengarna räckte gott och väl. Hyran är dyrare i Skottland, men allt annat är billigare. Tänk bara på att första månaden när man kommer hem är oftast fattig! Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Jag gick med i Whisky society, tennis society och cheese society. Vi gjorde precis det man tror i dessa, drack whisky, spelade tennis och åt ost. Det finns galet mycket att välja på. Jag tyckte whisky society var roligast, det är en riktigt stor förening så det finns mycket folk att träffa varje gång de har provning (en gång i veckan). Jag åkte även på en whiskyresa med dem, upp till highlands på en massa destillerier. Det var sjukt kul! Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. Jag var inte säker på om jag ville åka innan, men nu i efterhand är jag väldigt glad att jag gjorde det. Alla vi som åkte från Uppsala hängde en del där nere, vilket man kanske kan tycka är lite tråkigt (hälften av vårt umgänge var svenskar), men nu när vi är hemma är det sjukt skönt! Examinations... Under min utbytestermin vid University of Edinburgh läste jag sammanlagt 4 stycken (juridik-) kurser: Scottish Legal System, International Law, Business Entities och Contract & Unjustified Enrichment. Nästan alla kurser ges i två storlekar, 10 eller 20 credits. Delar man det på två får man fram det i svenska högskolepoäng, en termins fulltidsstudier i Skottland motsvarar alltså 60 credits. Det luriga med det skotska systemet är att antalet credits, eller storleken på kursen, inte riktigt motsvarar den schemalagda tiden. Jag hade exempelvis mer schemalagda aktiviteter (föreläsningar och lektioner) i en 10 credits kurs jämfört med en som var på 20 credits. Fyra olika kurser är därför vad som maximalt rekommenderas att läsa parallellt per termin. Föreläsningar och lektioner är alltid 50 minuter långa men desto fler till antalet. Många veckor hade jag 9 föreläsningar och 4 lektioner, så det kändes som att jag, och alla andra studenter, ständigt var på väg till en föreläsning eller lektion. Allting ligger koncentrerat runt campus så det är inga långa sträckor (om man inte läser tekniska grejer då kan man behöva resa en liten bit), men möjligheten att sitta flera timmar i sträck och kämpa med lagboken existerade inte riktigt - kalendern var alltid full med korta händelser och korta luckor. Alla mina kurser var på första- och andra års nivå. Det medförde att de innehöll ganska mycket course-work, för att de brittiska 18 åringarna inte ska skjuta upp allt skolarbete till sista veckan av terminen. Med andra ord inlämning av essäer, muntliga föredragningar och rättegångspel under terminens gång. Jag tyckte att detta upplägg var engagerande då jag fick jobba mycket med engelskan och jag fick tidigt återkoppling på hur jag låg till i studierna. Desto högre nivå på kurserna, desto mer självstudier och vanligtvis en stor uppsats mot Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 56 av??

8 slutet som bär hela betyget. Beroende på vad du vill få ut av ditt utbyte ska du välja nivå på kurserna därefter. En helt fantastisk inrättning är att alla föreläsningar videofilmas och inom något dygn laddas upp på kursens hemsida. Så om man av någon anledning inte lyckas komma upp ur sängen på morgonen finns det alltid en andra chans att ta ikapp förlorad mark. Något som kan vara lite vilseledande är att trots det omfattande antalet föreläsningar och lektioner är nivån på dessa ganska låg, ofta täcks här bara de mest grundläggande dragen. Sen när det är dags för examination ställs helt andra krav på fördjupning och om man siktar mot de högre betygen krävs omfattande självstudier. Antagligen åker du inte hit för att få höga betyg, men bli i vilket fall inte förvånad om du landar på runt 60 % av de tilldelningsbarapoängen. Huvudbiblioteket (Main Library) har öppet till kl 02:15 varje dag om du behöver jobba ikapp någon gång, utsikten från femte våningen är riktigt fin. Juridiska biblioteket är lite mer slitet och stämningsfullt, men kan vara en bra tillflyktsort även för icke-juriststudenter under tenta plugget. Dessutom finns här 4 studieplatser med havsutsikt om inspirationen sinar vid essä skrivandet. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. I början av höstterminen är det Freshers week som gäller och i början av vårterminen Refreshers week, smart va? Tänk Recceveckan, Novischveckan eller Nollningsveckan. Det är helt enkelt kalas i 8 dagar. Man kan köpa ett all-inclusive armband för 40 eller betala engångsinträde på runt 5-7 för varje event. Edinburgh University Students Association (EUSA) kommer att skicka information till din hemadress om detta typ en månad innan terminen börjar. Vad du måste göra under den här veckan är att besöka Sports Fair, vilket är en mässa där universitetets 63 olika sportklubbar visar upp sig och raggar medlemmar. Man kan skriva upp sig på hur många som helst, medlemsavgiften på ca 30 per termin betalar man först efter några veckor om man är fast besluten att gå med. Fram till dess kan man prova på precis allting. Samma sak gäller för Societies Fair, de två kan infalla på samma dag. Här gäller det de 240 olika societies som finns vid University of Edinburgh. Missa inte dessa tillfällen, gå dit! Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Man kan säga att det finns tre olika sorters boendeformer i Edinburgh universitetets studentbostäder, privata studentbostäder eller hyra privat. Universitetets studentbostäder är de man ansöker om på universitetets hemsida under fliken Accommodation Service. Studerar man bara en termin omfattas man inte av bostadsgarantin, men sök och hoppas på lite tur. Besked kommer ganska nära inpå terminsstart. Privata studentbostäder kan vara ganska dyra, men standarden är riktigt hög även med svenska mått mätt. Prova bland annat mansionstudent.co.uk, crm-student.com, collegiate-ac.com, unite-students.com, iq-student-accommodation.com och zigguratstudent.com. Dessa kan du börja söka långt i förväg. Vid sidan om den formella ansökningsprocessen kan man skicka ett mail direkt till någon av kontaktpersonerna så brukar de vara hjälpsamma. 9 Hyra en privat lägenhet och dela med några andra är mest populärt. Går man in på gumtree.com och klickar i Short Term hittar man många erbjudanden. I Skottland är det en juridisk gråzon mellan kort- och långtidsuthyrning. Många hyresvärdar vill därför helst hyra ut i minst 6 eller 9 månader. Är man bara i Edinburgh en termin blir det lite knasigt. Hyresvärdarna/agenterna kan av den anledningen utöva lite påtryckning att du ska skriva på för en längre tid och sen måste du hitta någon att sätta i ditt ställe när du åker hem efter kanske två tredjedelar av hyrestiden. Jag avråder från det upplägget, men vet du exempelvis att nästa omgångs utbytesstudenter vill ta över lägenheten så kör på. Undersök också om det finns internet och tv i lägenheten innan du flyttar in, och om det inte gör det ifall hyresvärden kan fixa det. De flesta abonnemang löper på minst 9 månader så det är kanske inget man signar upp för bara för en termin. Var beredd på att förhandla om det mesta! Hyr man privat måste man betala Council Tax, men är man fulltidsstudent kan man ansöka om undantag. Om du bara är i Skottland en termin uppfyller du inte kraven för detta (minst 24 veckors studier per år). Efter att ha mottagit en del otäcka fakturor under hösten luskade jag fram att det räcker att du är fulltidsstudent någonstans i hela världen. Be därför Uppsala universitet om ett intyg på att du är heltidsstuderande i Sverige så blir du undantagen. Gärna med lite stämplar och underskrifter så att det ser riktigt högtidligt ut. Jag delade en lägenhet i New Town som ligger norr om tågstationen/centrum. New Town har nära till affärsstråken och det lite finare utelivet, men från en students perspektiv ligger det på helt fel sida stan. Campusområdet, studentgymmet och allt studentliv äger rum söder om tågstationen, så försök bo där. Är det något område du särskilt ska lägga på minnet vid jakten på bostad så är det Marchmont, helt klart mest populärt. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? Jag minns när jag var liten och det brittiska pundet låg i 14 spänn, de dagarna är nu förbi. Pundet kostade runt 10,50 kr hösten 2013 så det var faktiskt billigare att leva i Storbritannien än i Sverige. Med förstärkt CSN klarar man sig bra. Spara därför lite plats i väskan för du kommer nog köpa på dig en hel del saker, särskilt jultröjorna från Primark är omåttligt populära. Betala hyra, elräkningar eller göra andra överföringar kan man göra gratis på vilket bankkontor som helst, det där med kontantlösa kontor finns inte i Skottland. Kort accepteras nästan överallt och med ICA-Student har man fria kontantuttag utomlands, jag krånglade därför inte med öppna något bankkonto på plats. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Vid sidan om att besöka studentpubarna där en shot går lös för 1 och drinkar 2, rekommenderar jag starkt att gå med i någon av de mindre sportklubbarna och engagera sig lite extra i denna. Här har du en enkel och billig möjlighet att prova på sporter som nästan inte finns i Sverige och sportklubbarna anordnar även mycket sociala tillställningar (dricka öl) utöver själva sportandet. Dyker man upp regelbundet i början går det fort att komma in i gemenskapen. Sportklubbarna är också ett bra sätt att träffa icke-utbytesstudenter och lämna Erasmus-bubblan för en stund. Jag gick med i Lerduveskytteklubben (Clay Pigeon Shooting Club) och hade en fantastisk upplevelse. Klubben bestod till största delen av engelsmän och vi var bara 30 medlemmar, så Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 58 av??

10 det gick fort att skaffa vänner. Vi sköt varje onsdagseftermiddag en bit utanför Edinburgh vilket erbjöd ett bra avbrott från studierna och en möjlighet att komma ut på landsbygden. Efter två månader när vi höjt skickligheten i klubben åkte vi till St Andrews och tävlade mot andra brittiska universitet i lerduveskytte, med tillhörande bal på kvällen - tänk obligatoriskt Barbour ställ och ännu mer engelsmän. St Andrews vann tyvärr. Mot slutet av terminen samlade vi ihop en grupp (över-)intresserade och åkte upp i Högländerna på fågeljakt fasaner, rapphönor och en sån där rackare man kan se på Famous Grouse flaskan.. Med andra ord, gå med i någon sportklubb och missa inte möjligheten att göra något mycket speciellt av ditt utbyte. Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. Skottland är ett land man måste resa runt i på egen hand och jag rekommenderar att göra det innan terminen drar igång, sen blir det bara någon enstaka helgutflykt till Högländerna med buss. Jag kom till Edinburgh innan terminsstart och hyrde bil med en kompis i 11 dagar, vi hann upptäcka riktigt mycket och träffa många trevliga skottar (Arnold Clark Car Rental = 3900 kr för 11 dagar även om föraren är under 25 år). Om du passar på att se det mesta av Skottland innan terminen börjat kan du spendera de kommande helgerna med att besöka Glasgow, London, Dublin.. eller kanske Newcastle om du gillar Geordie Shore. Med ett Railcard får man 30 % rabatt på alla tågresor i Storbritannien, så det tjänar man in på en tur och retur till London. Innan du lämnar Sverige ska du låsa upp din iphone, för det kan vara trixigt eller omöjligt att göra från utlandet. Tre hade ett bra kontantkort som kostade 16 för 30 dagar, med fri surf och fria samtal/sms inom UK. Approval 18. Examinations... De tre kurser jag läste var inte svåra men de skiljde sig från Uppsala Universitet i och med att alla kurser lästes parallellt. Lärarna var väldigt engagerade i kurserna vilket var bra, en av kurserna jag läste var Strategic Management och den kursen kan jag rekommendera. I kursen skrev man en rapport i grupp i samarbete med RBS och EY som sedan blev betygsatta av dem och de tre bästa rapporterna fick ett fint pris. Jag och en tjej från Sverige försökte hitta lägenhet och till en början var det svårt eftersom de flesta landlords vill hyra ut minst sex månader. Lägenheterna var dock över lag bättre skick än vad jag hade förväntat mig. Till slut hittade vi en Landlord som var villig att göra en förhandling att vi hyrde i fyra månader och att sedan studenterna som kom på vårterminen tog över lägenheten. Det är väldigt smidigt att resa runt i UK med tåg och flyg, t ex till London, Glasgow, upp till the Highlands. On the whole it wasn t to big of a difference between Uppsala and Edinburgh, though it feelt like in Uppsala they are more discussion based, with seminars and so forth, and Edinburgh more classical meaning that it was more like learn this and repeat it on the test. Also how the term was structured with 2 weeks of holiday and 1 revision week, and only 11 weeks of study. This made the whole term feel a bit crammed. Also, they have more essays in Edinburgh (at least one for every course), and their hand-in-date ended up in the same month so during that time a lot of effort had to be put in writing them. I took some courses from the Scandinavian department, which might sound strange but they were very interesting since you got a Scottish perspective on Scandinavia and its languages. I would also recommend taking a Gaelic course if you want to learn more about Scotland and it s history and culture. It s always good to learn about a country through a language perspective. If you are planning to take a course in English literature you should pick a 1 year course, since the 2 year course could be a huge challenge if you re not used to analysing. Access to computer was good and they had a very good system when it comes to printing and such. Examinations where different to Uppsala in that they were only (form me) maximum 3 hours long and you must use a pen and you were only alowed to drink water (so no snacking). They had a people from the Uni welcomming you at the Airport if you arrived at a certain date, which I did. They helped me get a cab which I shared with some other Exchange students which made the ride quite cheap. Though in hind sight I could have arrived earlier, since I didn t really get any time to settle in and relax. I signed up for the Buddie Program they have for international students, and I guess if you are lucky with the people you are pared with you can find some good friends. I didn t really click with mine, though it was a bit nice to have some people you know in the first days. So my advice is to arrive like a week before the semester starts to settle in. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I lived in a Univeristy accommodation, Fraser. The good things was that I didn t have to worry about bills since water, heat and internet was included in the rent. Also I didn t have to remember to pay any bills since the drew the money automatically from my account. The guys I lived in were nice though in hind sight I should have probably gone for private accommodation since the students living in Uni accommodation are usually younger and not as clean and tindy as I would like. Though it was really nice to have my accommodation done before I left Sweden. That was the main reason I chose the Uni accommodation and that I would live with people from the UK. Though, if I would go on a exchange again I would probably go for private accommodation, especially if I was to study there for a year. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. My rent was about 4000 kr a month, and I found the CSN adequate and didn t have to undertake part-time work. Though I must mention that I got some help from my parents. Free time 16. University of Edinburgh have very good societies and I was very busy during my stay. They have a society for almost everything chocolate, whiskey, Harry Potter, Singing, Theater, Film, Manga/Anime, Beer - you name it! They have a wonderful Photo Society for instance. The International Student Center was also very good since they arranged trips almost every Week to places both in Scotland and in England. And Edinburgh I such a beautiful and inspiring city, and Scotland is a wonderful country. A head up though, it s very hard to find and get to know Scots in University of Edinburgh. I was lucky though to find a Scottish conversation partner through a language exchange society called TANDEM. And through that partner I got to know more people from Scotland and UK. Finally, my advice is not to have to high expectation - I had sky-high expactations and when it didn t live up to it in the beginning I got quite sad. Examinations... All three courses I took at the University of Edinburgh were honours courses, i.e. third and fourth year courses for more ambitious students with a good academic record. These courses did not have much teacher-led time, only one hour of lectures and one hour of seminars each week, and thus required a lot of studying on your own. The grade was based on three parts: seminars (about 10%), a midterm essay (about 40%) and a final exam (or, in one of the courses, a final essay, accounting for 50%). Since all three courses spans through the entire semester, something I was not used to as my programme here in Uppsala has four part courses that are each studied individually, the mid-term essays were due approximately at the same time, which meant that there was a lot to do in the end of october/beginning of november. However, it was manageable, and you had more time to write it then you normally due in Uppsala. Overall, I am very satisfied with my courses, which had good teachers, a good academic level (not too hard, but you still felt that you learnt something and that you did not waste time). The access to computers was good, although during daytime during exam or essay periods, the main library was quite crowded and it could be hard to find a good spot there (although there were also other places where you could study). 19 Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. I had not found an apartment before I arrived, and thus spent the first night at a hostel and was quite stressed about finding a place to live, which sorted itself out the following day. I settled in very quickly, and quickly found a daily routine. The differences between Scotland and Sweden are not that great, and it is very easy to feel at home, especially since the people around you are very nice! It is not a very large city, so finding your way in Edinburgh is very easy, and the univeristy is very centrally located (at least the campus where I had my lectures and seminars). It also helped to arrive during Fresher s Week, when there was a lot of activities and parties arranged for new students, and during that week I met most of the people I turned out to hang out with the entire semester! Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Since I was only there for one semester, I was not guaranteed accomodation through the university. However, I found accomodation very quickly, as two of the other exchange students from Uppsala had found an apartment with three bedrooms and offered me the third room. The apartment was very nice, about 15 minutes walk from the univeristy and about 10 minutes walk from the city center. I recommend for private accomodation, as there are many second-hand apartments there. However, it can be hard to find somewhere to live for just one semester, as most want a tenant for at least 6 month or a full academic year. One idea, which we did, was to contact the students coming the following semester and try to arrange so that they can take over the apartment when you leave. Your finances 15. I paid about 330 in rent, which is about the same as I pay here in Uppsala. I did not work parttime, as I felt that the CSN was enough: I do not require especially high maintenance, and I felt that food and most other things that students need were slightly cheaper in Edinburgh than they are in Uppsala. Were you happy with what was on offer? There is lots to do on your free time. There is a gym and several sports clubs, if you are interested in that. For me, who is not, there is loads of other stuff to do: there are over 250 societies, ranging from the Cheese Society to the Society for International Development (and even a Scandinavian Society). I joined the Economics Society and the Politics and International Relations Society, who organised very interesting lectures and discussions. I also took some time to travel around the UK, for example to London, Belfast and of course to the Scottish highlands. The ISC, International Student Center, organised their own trips for international students and exchange students, although I did not go with them as I preferred to arrange my own trips at times that suited me better.
