Examinations... The studies at Deusto is at a lower level then in Uppsala. There are more similar to high school than university. Small classrooms, you are expected to interact with the teachers and a more practical approach to learning. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. The arrival was smooth, the international office gave a good structure and support with meetings and there doors were always open (exept during the siesta). Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I used the university accommodation service with was really good. I got my keys to Uppsala before arrival, so I went from the airport directly to the apartment which were perfectly clean and modern. I understood later that the apartments via the university were more expencive than if you find it one your own, but for me it was worth it. My room costed me about 340euro per month, and if you find a room on your own, you can probebly get it for under 300 euros. Everything is cheaper in Bilbao than in Uppsala. Food, resturants, clothes and so on. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? I tried Basque dance and went on a lot of hiking trips arranged by the univerity hiking club. So bring hiking shoes, around Bilbao there are a lot of beutiful mountains and thing you would like to see and to go with the hiking club you need to have good shoes. Your exchange on the whole 17. So many new experiences, great people, a wonderful city, nice beaches only 30minutes away, beautiful nature, culture and history. Going to Bilbao is my best decision so far in life! Approval 18. Examinations... Studierna i Bilbao var bra men ganska annorlunda i jämförelse med Uppsala. Grupperna var mindre, lärarna kunde namnen på alla studenter och närvaro var obligatoriskt (upp till 10% frånvaro var okej). Studierna här var alltså mer som gymnasiet här hemma. Lärarna är mer personliga och ger gärna tips på vad som händer runt om i Baskien och vad man borde se när man är där. Jag läste två språk- och kulturkurser, en i spanska och en i baskiska. Dessa kurser var väldigt bra med en timmes lektion per dag måndag-torsdag och vi fick en liten läxa till varje lektion. Detta är lite annorlunda mot i Uppsala men är ett effektivt sätt att lära sig språk på så det fungerade väldigt bra. Jag läste även intensivkursen i spanska veckorna innan de vanliga kurserna startade tillsammans med de flesta andra utbytesstudenterna. I dessa kurser hade vi både midterms och final exams. Förutom språkkurser läste jag även Management Skills for Engineers och Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship. I dessa kurser var det lektioner två gånger per vecka. Den första bestod av små gruppredovisningar samt tre större projekt som vi jobbade med kontinuerligt hela terminen under lektionerna. Den andra kursen bestod av föreläsningar med individuella projekt och redovisningar baserade på föreläsningsmaterialet. I båda dessa kurser var det däremot svårt att få feedback och att få veta vad det slutgiltiga målet med projekten var. Lärarna var ganska oklara i sina förklaringar. Arbetsbelastningen skulle jag säga var ganska lika som i Uppsala men mer utspritt. Jag pluggade mer under terminens gång i Bilbao än vad jag gör i Uppsala. I Uppsala brukar det bli mer intensivt tentaplugg i några veckor innan tentorna vilket inte var nödvändigt i Bilbao då man var tvungen att plugga lite hela tiden. 4 Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. När jag först kom till Bilbao var det Semana Grande, det var festivalstämning i hela staden och det fanns massor av saker att se och göra. Det som var lite svårt var språket. Inte många pratar engelska och jag hade bara läst spanska som c-språk på högstadiet. Jag åkte däremot inte ensam och de andra kunde mer spanska som vi ganska knaggligt tog oss fram med. På universitetet togs vi emot av internationella kansliet och de gav oss all information vi behövde på både engelska och spanska. Jag gick intensivkursen i spanska som gick under två veckor innan de andra kurserna började. Detta var väldigt bra då man lärde sig mycket av språket och det var här jag lärde känna de flesta av mina kompisar. Så att gå denna rekommenderar jag verkligen! Förutom detta så hölls även orientation days där information gavs och vi hade även en guidad tur runt om i staden. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. Jag och tre andra tjejer från Uppsala bodde tillsammans i en fyra som vi fått genom universitetet. Universitetet har ett jättebra system där du prioriterar de fem lägenheter du helst vill ha. Vi fick vårt andrahandsval med 5-10 minuters gångavstånd till skolan och överlag ett bra läge. Det var nära till det mesta och närmaste metrostation låg precis vid lägenheten. Jag är överlag väldigt nöjd med det boende vi hade. Vi hade alla varsitt rum och delade på kök och badrum. Köket och badrummet var dock väldigt små men det fungerade ändå bra. Mitt tips gällande boende är att gå genom universitetet. Vill du inte bo i lägenhet med andra studenter finns det även möjligheten att bo med en familj eller i universitetets korridorer. Hyran i Bilbao var ganska dyr, det var inte så stor skillnad mot i Uppsala. Vi betalade 320 per person plus räkningar för gas och vatten. Vad dessa räkningar var på per månad är jag inte säker på. Allt annat förutom hyran i Spanien är däremot mycket billigare än i Sverige och jag hade inga problem med att klara mig på CSN och erasmusstipendiet. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? På fritiden var vi ofta på stranden! Bilbao ska vara känt för sitt dåliga väder med mycket regn men under höstterminen regnade det knappt någonting och det var strandväder ända till november. Det fanns flera olika organisationer som ordnade erasmusevent under veckorna och det var alltid mycket folk. Allt från barrundor till tandem där man träffas och övar på språk arrangerades. Ville man inte gå på dessa event så finns en lång bargata där det alltid var mycket folk. Vi var även på fotboll några gånger och mycket kretsar kring fotbollen i Bilbao, varje matchdag är lite som en folkfest. Förutom detta var vi på en hel del resor, både mindre och större. Vi besökte små byar runt omkring där det i början av hösten var fiestas med massa traditionella lokala firanden. Vi Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 363 av 396

5 var även till San Sebastian, Biarritz i Frankrike, Barcelona, Granada och Sevilla. Vissa av resorna var på egen hand och vissa arrangerade då vi åkte med en stor grupp utbytesstudenter. Överlag är jag jättenöjd med min utbytestermin och jag är glad att jag valde att åka till ett ställe som inte är allt för stort och som jag inte visste så mycket om innan. Allt ifrån ansökan och boende till utbudet i staden och upplevelser har varit bra. Jag ångrar inte en sekund att jag åkte och jag tycker att alla ska ta chansen att åka på ett utbyte under studietiden! Det är otroligt roligt och lärorikt och ett enkelt sätt att testa på hur det är att flytta till ett främmande land under en period. Jag rekommenderar det verkligen! Approval 18. Examinations... Jag skulle säga att det är mer gymnasienivå på universitetet i Spanien. Man får mer läxor varje vecka och det är prov i slutet av kursen och inte tentor. Jag skulle verkligen rekommendera kursen Basque language and culture! Det är verkligen fantastiskt att få lära sig så mycket om Baskien när man väl är där. Jag hade en underbar lärare (Mari José) men om man väljer den kursen får man vara beredd på att det är svårt att lära sig det baskiska språket. Dessutom måste man kunna lite spanska eftersom kursen är på spanska/baskiska och minimalt med engelska. Intensivkursen i spanska tycker jag också är väldigt värd att läsa. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Det var smidigt att registrera sig trots att det var många papper som skulle skrivas på på olika ställen. Det internationella kansliet på universitetet var väldigt hjälpsamma och de kunde bra engelska. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Jag fixade boende genom skolan sommaren innan jag åkte. Det var väldigt smidigt. Man kunde se bilder på massa lägenheter som skolan hade och sen gjorde man en rangordning som man skickade in till skolan. 7 andrahandsval. Om man vill ha billigare boende så kan det vara värt att fixa boende när man kommer fram till Bilbao istället. Många kompisar gjorde det och det var inga problem att hitta boende. Hyran på min lägenhet var bara aningen billigare än i Sverige dock. CSN och erasmusstipendiumet räckte mer än väl för att leva, bo och åka på utflykter i hela Spanien. Free time 16. Universitetet och olika erasmusorganisationer ordnade med mycket aktiviteter och fester. Jag var med i en Hiking-group som gjorde vandringar och utflykter till olika fantastiskt vackra platser i Baskien varannan helg. Det fanns även körer och baskisk dans. Your exchange on the whole 17. Jag rekommenderar verkligen att åka på utbyte till Bilbao. Staden och Baskien är verkligen vackert och på universitetet kunde jag läsa kurser både på spanska och engelska. Festlivet i Spanien är riktigt bra, naturen runtom är otroligt vacker, det finns massor med stränder som är perfekta för surfing och maten är fantastisk Approval 18. What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... The teachers are different from each other but I think they have been good and helpful to the students. I ve been reading following courses: Technological Innovation and entrepreneurship, Management Skills for Engineers, Basque language and culture and Spanish. I would recommend them all, especially the basque course. There ve been a lot of homeworks and assignments instead of exams but we also had that in some courses. It s more important with the attendance in Deusto and the academic level wasn t that high as I m used to in Uppsala, but I wouldn t say that it s easy to get high grades, you need to put effort in it. The international office has been very good and they had special meetings for us where they were very clear with what was needed to be done etc. I really recommend this university for other students! Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. The reception was very welcoming and good. They had a welcome cermony with a presentation for all international students with the principal of the university. After they served us small things to eat like pintxos and something to drink. I started the exchange with an intensive course that was really good both to recap the Spanish and to get to know new friends during the first weeks. 9 Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I lived in an apartment with three other Swedish girls and we got the apartment by the university in Deusto. The landlord sended the keys to us in Sweden before we went to Spain and everything worked very well. I would recommend to try to get an apartment by the university. The only bad thing was that it was a bit more expensive than other accommodation options but in the other hand it worked very well. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. It s a lot cheaper in Spain so my finances have been good and I ve been able to travel a lot. The rent was cheaper in Spain than in Uppsala. CSN and Erasmus were fine to make a living and travel, which is one of the pros of going to Spain, since it s quite cheap comparing to Sweden. It s cheap to eat and drink out. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? The university arrange a lot of things, like for example sport and basque dance. I didn t do any of it since some days I had classes until seven o clock (I didn t started my classes until one o clock - very different from home but it worked well). I spent time with my erasmus friends and some organisations outside the school arranged a lot of fun activities. They also arranged a lot of hiking trips. I went a weekend to Sevilla and Granada very cheap (not with the university) and I went with my friends to Barcelona on our own by train. I also went by bus to Biarritz in France. San Sebastian is only an our away by bus so it s easy to get there as well. Since Bilbao is a really soccer city, there re games every week. Then people go out to a bar street named Pozas - where the atmosphere is great! And of course the amazing Guggenheim museum, where they also arrange party one Friday each month. I m really grateful that I got this opportunity to go to Bilbao and Spain. I see the world in a different way after the exchange and it gave me new perspectives. I think this experience is something I will carry with me my whole life. I hope that people will go to Bilbao, because it s an amazing city with a lot to do. You can choose between city or going to the beach in 15 minutes by the metro (that goes all the time). If you re interested in surfing, you re able as a student to take a cheap surf courses. I recommend the beach Sopelana (about 20 minutes from the city by metro). So, the sum up of everything, if you have the opportunity - go to Bilbao!
