The Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation STIFTELSEN MARCUS OCH AMALIA WALLENBERGS MINNESFOND The Wallenberg Foundation Postdoctoral Scholarship Program "The Stig Hagström stipend" The Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation have set up a Scholarship Program at Stanford University. The purpose of the program is to bring outstanding young Swedish scientists to Stanford University for one to two years of postdoctoral study and research in one of the many areas of investigation related to environmental and energy sustainability, and international studies being carried out there. At the same time, the Fellows have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of interdisciplinary activities and programs that characterize Stanford s approach to these topics, thereby attaining the breadth of perspective needed to address such challenging issues as global climate change, resource management, and sustainable energy production. Examples of such programs at Stanford include the Woods Institute for the Environment, the Precourt Institute for Energy, and the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies, as well as a multitude of departments in the Schools of Earth Sciences, Engineering, and Humanities and Sciences. One goal of the program is to inspire forward-looking researchers to move into emerging scientific fields that address basic research issues related to energy and environment, and which will have a fundamental impact on future developments on an international scale. After completing their tenure as Fellows, the Scholars will return to Sweden and use their experience from Stanford for the benefit of Sweden. Professor Emeritus Stig Hagström has spent many years at the Material Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University. He has also been an ambassador for collaborations between Swedish universities and Stanford University. In order to honour all his efforts this scholarship program is set up in his name. The Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation invite applicants for these postdoctoral stipends for the 2010-2012 period. The Stipend is for a period of two years of postdoctoral studies. The Stipend amounts to USD 40,000 annually together with USD 5,000 as an allowance for accompanying Box 16066 λ 103 22 STOCKHOLM λ Telefon 08-545 017 71 λ Fax 08-545 017 85

After each year a progress report shall be prepared and sent to the Foundation. The Foundation uses an electronic application system. Please apply via the web-site. The applicants should have a doctor s degree from a Swedish University at the time when the post-doc period starts and a connection to a Swedish University or corresponding non-profit research organization. The Stipend cannot be combined with other stipends or positions. Scientific merits adjusted to age will be one important factor at the assessment. A complete application should contain the applicant s CV including a list of publications, a brief description of current research programme and a description of the research profile of the intended host. A letter of recommendation from the intended host should be sent directly to the Foundation. If the applicant has not received the doctor s exam at the time of the application a letter from the tutoring professor should be enclosed where actual date for exam is stated. Each applicant should ensure that two separate letters of recommendation with comments on the research programme are submitted directly to the Foundation. The application shall be written in English. The application period starts September 15, 2009, and a complete application shall be submitted to the Foundation no later than December 15, 2009.
