GE Healthcare Preliminary Assessment of PFAS in Groundwater Uppsala, Sweden 1. INTRODUCTION This report presents the findings of the analysis of groundwater for Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from four sampling locations on the GE Healthcare (GEH) facility, Uppsala. The sampling was undertaken concurrent with the site wide routine groundwater monitoring performed in September 2016 and in response to a request by the EA (March 2016). 1.1. Groundwater Sampling Methods The collection of groundwater samples followed the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) low-flow sampling protocol for purging and sampling (EPASOP-GW 001, Revision 3, January 2010). Groundwater was collected from two sampling locations with response zones constructed in the perched groundwater zone (MW-16 and MW-28) and two sampling locations in the deep groundwater zone (MW-101 and MW-105). The sampling locations are shown on Figure 1. Field measurements for ph, ORP, temperature, specific conductivity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were performed using an YSI 556 Multiprobe system and in-line flow-through cell. Field data and observations collected during groundwater sampling activities are presented in Tables 1 and 2. When purging was completed (i.e., indicator parameter measurements had stabilized), the discharge line for the peristaltic pump was disconnected from the flow-cell, and groundwater samples were collected from the discharge tubing directly into laboratory supplied sample containers. The water was allowed to slowly run down the inside of the tilted glass container so as not to aerate the sample. Groundwater samples were collected and stored in clean laboratory-provided glassware. To preserve the water samples, containers were placed in cooler boxes on ice and transported under chain-of-custody by overnight courier to Eurofins Sweden (Eurofins). 1.2. Laboratory Analysis The four groundwater samples were analyzed for PFAS compounds at Eurofins in general accordance with UNEP DIN38407-42 and included the following eleven parameters: Perfluorbutansulfonat (PFBS), Perfluorhexansulfonat (PFHxS), Perfluoroktansulfonat (PFOS), Fluortelomersulfonat (6:2 FTS), Perfluorbutanoat (PFBA), Perfluorpentanoat (PFPeA), Perfluorhexanoat (PFHxA), Perfluorheptanoat (PFHpA), Perfluoroktanoat (PFOA), November 2016 Page iii

Quality Assurance/Quality Control For samples sent to Eurofins, one duplicate sample was collected and analyzed. In addition, one trip blank, field blank and field blank were also analyzed. One duplicate QA/QC sample was collected from monitoring well MW-28 and submitted to Eurofins for analysis of PFAS. In addition, one laboratory-prepared trip blank, one field blank and one rinsate blank were submitted to Eurofins for PFAS analysis. The QA/QC sample results are summarized in Table 3. A comparison of the primary and duplicate samples collected from MW28 indicate that laboratory precision was within acceptable limits. The trip blank showed not detectable concentrations of PFAS. The field and rinsate blank showed minor detection of PFAS compounds. Potable bottled water was used for the field and rinsate blank samples. November 2016 Page iv

ANALYTICAL RESULTS PFAS analytical results were compared with Livsmedelsverkets recommended action level for total of 11 PFAS compounds and SGIs preliminary guideline value for PFOS in groundwater. SGI guideline value is regulated by protection of groundwater as natural resource in first place, followed by intake of groundwater as drinking water and protection of surface water. Results from the September 2016 groundwater monitoring event are as follows, and also presented in Table 3.
