Biological and cell membranes Cell membranes consist of a double layer of amphiphatic molecules, proteins and carbohydrates
Transport through cell membranes Diffusion Passive transport Facilitated diffusion Active transport Endo-/ exocytocis Transcellular transport All depend on chemical properties
Transport through cell membranes Diffusion is the most important mechanism for the transport of organic compounds through membranes
Transport through cell membranes Diffusion Passive transport Facilitated diffusion Active transport Endo-/ exocytocis Transcellular transport
Transport through cell membranes Passive transport can take place through pores, e.g. ion channels, that can be opened/closed by the cell
Transport through cell membranes Diffusion Passive transport Facilitated diffusion Active transport Endo-/ exocytocis Transcellular transport
Transport through cell membranes Facilitated diffusion is a process involving a membrane protein and specific recognition, but lacking the ability to concentrate a compound on one side
Transport through cell membranes Diffusion Passive transport Facilitated diffusion Active transport Endo-/ exocytocis Transcellular transport
Transport through cell membranes Active transport on the other hand can pump a chemical against a concentration gradient, but costs ATP
Transport through cell membranes Endo-/ exocytocis will transport large molecules (e.g. proteins) and materia in/out of the cell

Anilin kan läcka ut till livsmedel och det är därför olämpligt att använda redskapet vid matlagning. MDA får inte användas i material som normalt kommer i kontakt med livsmedel. Absorption of chemicals Lungs Intestinal tract Skin Other
Absorption in the lungs 1.Aerosols 2.Gases
Absorption in the gut/intestines The gastrointestinal tract is a tube that transverses the body (appr. 8 m long!)
Absorption in the gut/intestines Chemicals are mainly absorbed in the small intestines Chemical reactions may take place in the stomach Enzymatic conversions may also take place
Absorption in the gut/intestines In principle, anything is absorbed. The exception is chemicals that are only poorly soluble in the intestine mush. An example is olestra, an octaester with stearic acid and saccharose
Absorption through the skin The skin is a physical barrier that protects us and maintain our body fluid. The chemical must penetrate (by diffusion) the epidermis before reaching the blood vessels in the dermis
Distribution of xenobiotics Depends on: Solubility Biological barriers Transformations Conversions
Excretion Via the kidneys Via the liver Via the lungs Other
Excretion via the kidneys The kidneys receive 25 % of the cardiac output Initially, the kidneys produce appr. 200 l of primary urine After resorption in the tubili, the final urine volume is appr. 1.5 l/day
Excretion via the liver Blood from the intestines arrive to the liver and is extracted by liver cells Metabolites are either pumped back into the blood or to the bile, which is transported to the intestines
Excretion in the lungs Volatile compounds can go from the blood to the air in the lungs and be exhaled
