It is divided into 11 separate certificates. Each certificate has it s own Environmental Coordinator. Centre for Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (VHC) and University Animal Hospital (UDS) SLU Umeå Environmental certification for Ull MVM Center The Swedish Livestock Research Center - Lövsta SLU Alnarp (Alnarp, Balsgård, Odarslöv) SLU Skara (Skara, Götala, Lanna) Ecology Center and Naturicum (, Grimsö) SLU Skinnskatteberg/Skogsmästarskolan BioCenter Department of Aquatic Resources
ULL Is the name our certificate. Most of us are located in Ulls hus and in Undervisningshuset. University Management, University Administration + SLU Library + Department of Economics + Department of Forest Products + SOL = TRUE. Almost every division or department within the certificate has it s own Environmental Representative.
Environmental management system ORGANISATION & RESPONSIBILITY ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATION ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY The environmental management system can be summed up in these five parts: 1. An environmental policy 2. Environmental objectives with procedures and action plans 3. Legislation and regulations - that must be followed 4. Anomaly reporting and improvement suggestions 5. Emergency preparedness CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT FOLLOW-UP EDUCATION ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVES & ACTION PLANS PROCEDURES COMMUNICATION The environmental management system follows a year cycle. It consists of, among other things, regular internal and external audits, with workplace visits, document reviews and staff interviews.
Environmental policy SLU s environmental policy was laid down through a Vice-chancellor s resolution in 2011. It constitutes the basis for the whole environmental certification process of the university. 1. SLU contributes to an ecologically, socially and financially sustainable development. 2. Environmental thinking and environmental aspects are integrated in all decisionmaking and are part of all activities within SLU s organisational units. 3. The environmental work at SLU is a longterm process which builds on continuous improvement and is based on the environmental regulations in force.
biologisk m ångfald vetenskap innovation Environmental objectives ENERGY USE BUSINESS TRAVEL SLU has adopted environmental objectives within these five areas: Energy use Business travel Procurement Education for sustainable development (UHU) Environmental monitoring and assessment (FOMA). These objectives are objects of auditing and are followed up twice a year. Additions and adjustments are made during the process. SLU s overall environmental objectives ULL s environmental objectives TJÄNSTERESOR a selection of slu s overall objectives energy use: increase in self-sufficiency of no less than 13% during 2014-2020. heating: no less than 90% self-sufficiency on SLU properties. Decrease in co2 emissions from domestic travel by 20%/employee during 2013-2020. All procurements of goods or services with a considerable environmental impact should result in a good environmental choice, if possible. Goods and services considered as good environmental choice should be made available in Proceedo, labelled with a green leaf. 75% of all course leaders should attend a one-day workshop on uhu before the end of 2017. TJÄNSTERESOR INKÖP In addition to the overall and common objectives for the whole university, Ull s certificate has adopted objectives within these areas: campus vehicles All new vehicles should be green cars powered by electricity or biogas. Cars owned by divisions within the certificate should, by the end of 2018, be replaced with green cars. catering at meetings and conferences No less than 20% of all catered meals should be vegetarian by the end of 2018.
procedures for undergrad education Procedures To help all of us in our work to reach the environmental objectives, there are procedures developed for the different environmental objective areas and activities of the organisation. They consist of guidelines that will help us make the most environmentally friendly choices. All procedures are collected in the Environmental Handbook, see the very end of this leaflet. Inform the student at introductory courses of the environmental management system of the departmnent:. Encourage them to make anomaly reports and give improvement suggestions. Carry out all practical course elements as environmentally friendly as possible: As much as possible of the materials used should be reused or recycled Transportions at excursions should be as environmentally friendly as possible Published course literature should be digital or copied two-sided (according to the copyright agreement). Review the course syllabus and consider if it could be relevant to reinforce the environmental content of the course by adding/ adjusting/changing the content and/or setup. This could be done by categorizing the course as being one of these three groups: 1) Sustainable development course (The entire course covers subjects related to sustainable development) 2) Course with elements of sustainable development 3) Course without any elements of sustainable development. If possible - reinforce the sustainability element and evironmental content in the group 2 courses. State in the syllabus whether the course includes sustainability elements and to what extent. Also add a short description (under Sustainable development) of which of the subjects that are included. This is optional but highly recommended!
Follow-up Follow-up, monitoring and measuring is managed by the Environmental Coordinator of the certificate. Environmental objectives, significant environmental aspects, compliance with regulations, education and procedures are all followed up, according to the standards of ISO14001. The follow-up also includes making sure that all anomaly reports and improvement suggestions have been registered; the anomalies have been rectified and the suggestions administered. SLU s overall follow-ups are presented in the list of the environmental objectives at the SLU Staff website.
Follow-up Some of the results from follow-ups made since the certification in 2014: The degree of self-sufficiency rose to 11,3% after the installation of solar cell panels in Lövsta, Alnarp and Röbäcksdalen. Fossil fuels are no longer used for the heating of SLU owned properties. 1% increase in co2 emissions from business travel during 2013-2016 (the objective was set to a decrease of 10%). 16% increase in co2 emissions from domestic travel during 2013-2016 (the objective was set to a decrease of 20%).
Environmental audit At least once a year an environmental audit is conducted, internal and external. In an internal audit, the environmental magement system is reviewed through inspection of procedures and follow-ups. The internal auditors visit workplaces and make spot-checks on the organisation by reviewing documents and interviewing staff members. External audits are carried out the same way but by an auditor from an independent certification body. If the organisation fulfills the requirements of the standard it receives a renewed environmental certificate.
Continuous improvements The environmental management system relies on all of us taking part by reporting anomalies and by contributing with ideas and suggestions for improvements. Anomaly reports and suggestions of improvements are important for detecting errors and for finding areas that could be further improved in order to fulfill the requirements of continuous improvements in the standard.
Continuous improvements You make your anomaly reports and suggest improvements in the environmental reporting system found on the SLU Staff website. There is a shortcut on our department intranet that will take you to the report form.
Environmental Handbook All the documents of the environmental mangement system are collected in a virtual guide called the Environmental Handbook. It is available for everybody on the SLU Staff website.
