1. Purpose of the report and definitions This report compiles information about the 100 largest employers in the Göteborg Region. The report includes a list presenting the 100 largest companies with company name and number of employees, and tables representing the largest employers in the public sector. The statistics refer to the number of employees in November 2007. Definitions Employee Employee includes people for whom employers, according to Swedish legislation, are responsible to report withholding tax and o who for the time being is employed o for whom the annual salary is estimated to exceed a certain price base amount (price base amount for 2006 is 39 700 SEK) o who are employed as a substitute for more than three months Employee does not include people o who are employed with wage subsidy, seasonal employment etc o who at the moment of investigation are on long time leave of absence or long term sick-listed (three months or longer) o who are employed as a substitute for less than three months The Göteborg Region The statistics is gathered from the 13 municipalities which are members in the Göteborg Region; Ale, Alingsås, Göteborg, Härryda, Kungsbacka, Kungälv, Lerum, Lilla Edet, Mölndal, Partille, Stenungsund, Tjörn and Öckerö. Company The statistics show the number of employees in each company. In this context, company, means an incorporated company, as opposed to a company empire/group or local unit such as a firm. Each company has an organizational number and may have operations in more than one location in the region. Municipality administrations and government agencies are not included in the list but presented separately in section 3. Sources: CFAR is a central computer file for Swedish Statistics that registers companies locations and employees. The publishing is continuous which gives the opportunity to measure the development in 2007 already in the beginning of 2008. The statistics is available for each municipality and divided into 700 branches. This provides us with detailed information from which specific statistics can be distinguished. 1

2. The 100 largest companies in the Göteborg Region Volvo Personvagnar AB is the largest company in the Göteborg Region with approximately 13 530 employees. The second largest company is Volvo Lastvagnar AB with more than 3 330 employees followed by Posten Meddelande AB with 2 630 employees and Chalmers University of Technology with 2580 employees. All together, the number of employees in the 100 largest companies in the Göteborg region approximates 86 300 employees, compared to previous year, this means a decrease of 1000 people. Still, every fifth (21%) working inhabitant is employed in one of these companies. Taking only the 10 largest companies into account a little bit more than 8%, meaning almost every tenth employee in the Göteborg region, is working in one of the ten largest companies. The decrease is partly due to the division of Posten AB into two companies which resulted in the larger company turning out smaller. The decrease in employees at Volvo Personvagnar AB is mainly due to voluntary retiring packages that have been offered to the employees. 2

3. The Public Sector The presentation above includes the 100 largest private companies in the Göteborg Region. In addition, there are a couple of large public employers in the region which will be at focus in this chapter, regarding public employers that employ more than 200 people. These employers, except four (Länsstyrelsen: County Administrative Board, Kronofogdmyndigheten: Enforcement Service, Statens Institutionsstyrelse: The State Board of Institutes and Sjöfartsverket: Swedish Maritime Administration), would qualify for a position on the list of 100 largest companies. The number of employees within the public sector increased with two percent during 2007, from 116 400 in 2006 to 118 600 in 2007. This means that every third working inhabitant in the region is employed within the public sector. More than 20 percent of all employees are working in the municipal sector. Corresponding figures for state activities and county council 1 is approximately seven percent respectively. These two organizations are the largest employers also when taking the largest private companies into account. The largest state activity is Göteborg University with 5 400 employees. 1 * County council is a politically chosen organization representing a number of municipalities in decisions regarding public health, medical services, social welfare services etc. In this context the county council includes people in the political organization and people employed in the sectors where the county council is responsible. 6
