Background European Union puts a directive to all member states to define a national IT Policy for the Healthcare sector at the latest 2005-12-31 In spring 2006 the IT Policy was accepted and the work begun to define an operative IT Strategy based on the Policy In the autom of 2006 the IT strategy was ready 4

Status and plan Won the procurment of the National NPÖ mars 2008 One of the requirements was that is must be a service Built on an existing product HS first time used on a national basis We have now passed acceptens of delivery one, the system is since yesterday in production. We will continue with implementing information what medications a pharmacy has deliverd to a patient and BIF 6
NPO in a nutshell The aim is to improve patient security and quality of care NPO makes real time patient information available to authorized care staff in county councils local authorities (municipalities) private healthcare providers NPO is the glue that provides the information regardless of organizational boundaries In a later phase also Swedish residents will have access to their own medical records via internet 7
Outcome of NPÖ Provide case record information from different care providers available across organization boundaries. The National Patient Summary gives authorised care staff access to critical patient information, irrespective of the organisation they belong to, the time and the place. With an overall picture of the patient, the care provider has better decision data for diagnoses, treatment and follow up. This improves efficiency and reduces the risk of wrong treatment and unnecessary examinations and tests. In the long term, the patient will also have greater influence over his/her care. 8
