The region of sustainable growth FOREIGN-OWNED COMPANIES IN THE GÖTEBORG REGION 2010

THIS IS WHAT WE DO Business Region Göteborg s Establishment and Relocation Service is a one-stop shop for businesses. Our service is free of charge and confidential. We handle everything from formation of companies and searching for the right offices to questions concerning housing and international schools. To succeed in our goal of facilitating matters for both start-up companies and existing companies, we have created a toolbox. The toolbox consists of databases, networks and access to expertise. Here are the most important components of the toolbox: Database for available land and premises Business Region Göteborg s database MALO shows available land and premises for either purchase or rental in the Göteborg Region. MALO is accessible via our website: www.businessregion.se. We have a wellestablished relation with real estate companies and landlords in the Göteborg Region. This enables us to help companies that wish to find an office or land appropriate for their business. RECRUITMENT AND STAFFING CONSULTANTS Our contacts are well established with the Swedish Public Employment Office in Göteborg. The office is a state-run, non-profit organization, offering recruitment expertise that is branch specific. They can assist a foreign employer by assessing recruitment prospects, by publishing vacancies on Sweden s largest job websites, as well as by providing suggestions regarding suitable job candidates. INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS The Göteborg Region has several international preschools, elementary schools and high schools serving the international community. With education being a major factor for those moving with families, we value our relationships with the international schools in facilitating your establishment and relocation process. REAL ESTATE/HOME BROKERS A long-standing and integrated network of real estate and home brokers eases the process of finding accommodations. We value this network highly, recognizing that housing issues go handin-hand with finding office space or land. QUALIFIED ADVISORS Our extensive network of local government representatives and qualified advisors, such as accountants, tax auditors, lawyers and business developers, also eases setting up a business here. Furthermore, we can assist you with concerns or questions relating to multi-cultural/diversity issues, infrastructure, regional cooperation, international trade, trade and industry development in general, as well as city planning. Please contact us and let us help make your establishment and relocation process a successful one!

FOREIGN-OWNED COMPANIES FOREIGN-OWNED COMPANIES IN THE GÖTEBORG REGION 10 This report is based on statistics from Statistics Sweden (Statistiska Centralbyrån, SCB) and input from the 13 municipalities in the Göteborg Region. The 13 municipalities are: 1. Ale 2. Alingsås 3. Göteborg 4. Härryda 5. Kungsbacka 6. Kungälv 7. Lerum 8. Lilla Edet 9. Mölndal 10. Partille 11. Stenungsund 12. Tjörn 13. Öckerö DEFINITIONS FOREIGN-OWNED A company is defined as foreign-owned in this context if more than half of the company s voting rights are controlled by a foreign-owner. If the company belongs to a company group where the parent company of this group is foreign-owned, this company is also considered foreign-owned. If the company has several owners, it is the highest ranked owner in the company s hierarchy (meaning the parent company, which in turn does not control more than 50 % of the voting rights in any other company) that determines the nationality of the company. ACQUISITION A company buy-out of another company. JOINT VENTURE A business project where two or more companies join together, often forming a new joint company, to manage a project. NEW ESTABLISHMENT A company is considered a new establishment when activities are either newly started or when activities are re-started after having been inactive for at least two years. A change in either company ownership or legal form does not qualify as a new establishment. DISCLAIMER Statistics concerning foreign-ownership are volatile. This document should therefore be used as a reference or guide with the understanding that not all company changes can be reflected. Moreover, the branch sector codes applied in this context are representative of the activities in a company s regional office and/or its largest operation in the Göteborg Region, and thus are not always representative of the activities of the company group as a whole. The number of foreign-owned companies with a head office in the Göteborg Region is nearly 1,600. The number has grown rapidly over the years. A head office is defined here as constituting the registered office of the company from which activities are organized. This includes Scandinavian, Nordic and general head offices. MERGER The union or joining together of two or more companies. 5

REASONS WHY MORE AND MORE FOREIGN-OWNED COMPANIES ARE CHOOSING TO ESTABLISH THEIR BUSINESSES IN THE GÖTEBORG REGION IN THE GÖTEBORG REGION THERE ARE: Many cutting-edge companies High class research & development Well-developed IT infrastructure THE GÖTEBORG REGION HAS: A unique location at the center of Scandinavia Extremely good logistical conditions High productivity and innovation pace THE GÖTEBORG REGION OFFERS: High quality of life An open business climate with trade traditions Access to great expertise FOREIGN-OWNED COMPANIES Vilant Systems chose Gothenburg as the location for establishing an office, because here you find the majority of Sweden s most important industries Vilant Systems potential customers. With Gothenburg as the starting point, both Norway and the south of Sweden are very accessible. With an office in Gothenburg, Vilant Systems is at the center of Scandinavia and able to access the attractive industries in the Oslo region as well as the Helsingborg region. The fact that Landvetter Airport has a direct flight to Helsinki, Finland, is also very important. Mr Ville Lukkari, Manager of the Finnish-owned company Vilant Systems, supplier of supply systems, June 2010. When the Glasdon Group Ltd. decided to establish a new sales office in Sweden, it was important to us to find a location which offered potential not only to expand into Sweden but also into the rest of Scandinavia in the near future. Gothenburg, being at the crossroad between Norway, Denmark and Sweden, was definitely ideal. Then, when we visited the area and met with Business Region Göteborg AB, we were confirmed in our conviction that Gothenburg was the right place for us. It offers good transportation connections with two airports and a good road and public transport network. Moreover, there are many very attractive premises for establishing new businesses and the financial life is buoyant. There are also many development projects in the area and a lot of blue-chip companies that represent many potential customers for us. Last but not least, the friendly, outgoing and dynamic attitude of the people in Gothenburg, along with their sense of humor, has done a lot to attract us. Mr David Riéra, Sales Office Manager at the British-owned company Glasdon Group, September 2010. Gothenburg is a good location from which to expand. Volvo, SKF and Saab are all close by. They have major IT requirements and we believe that we can develop the market here. Gothenburg is also close to Oslo and Copenhagen. The downside is that it is far from Stockholm, but our reasoning is that it is better to be close to three countries than to one. We have had a wonderful reception from Business Region Göteborg. The people there have welcomed us with open arms. It is good to find an organization which is genuinely interested in helping us, following up on our progress and making sure that everything is still going well. Mrs Cristiana Wall, Vice President of European Operations of Chinese-owned Wicresoft, February 2010. We first believed as many other Norwegian companies that we could establish our company in Gothenburg without assistance, but we soon understood that this was not the case. We contacted Business Region Göteborg, who have been a great support to us in our establishing process. They have helped us with all the administrative routines and legal frameworks, and we have been invited to Business Region Göteborg s well-developed networks. Other cities should follow Business Region Göteborg s example when it comes to assisting foreign-owned companies into the region. Rune Neteland, CEO of Norwegian-owned Emisoft, April 2009. 7

This can be reflected in the growing number and development of foreign-owned companies that have contributed to the regional economic growth. TABLE 1 shows that the number of people employed by foreign-owned companies has increased by a remarkable amount over a long period of time. However, there was a decrease at the beginning of the 1990s and a decrease by 3,000 people occured in 2008-2009. Now the number of employees has started to increase again. During the last 10 years, the foreign-owned companies in the region have increased by 84 %. In 2000, the region had around 1,200 foreign-owned companies and less than ten years later, the total is almost 2,300. In the last five years, the number of foreign-owned companies has increased by 5 6 % each year. This is indeed a very positive trend. The number of people employed by foreign-owned companies has increased from around 53,500 to almost 74,400 over a ten-year period. This is equal to a nearly 40 % increase. This is shown in DIAGRAM 2. To put it in a wider perspective, about every fifth employee in the Göteborg Region works at a foreign-owned company. In addition, the number of foreign-owned companies that chose to locate a head office function in the region has increased and almost 1,600 of the region s foreignowned companies now have either a regional, national or European head office located in the Göteborg Region. That is an increase since the last report when 1,400 companies had regional head offices here. DIAGRAM 3: FOREIGN-OWNED COMPANIES STRUCTURE Looking at types of company structures, the Göteborg Region does not differ from Sweden on a national level. As shown in DIAGRAM 3, 46 % of the foreign-owned companies in the Göteborg Region established their operations here through acquisitions. For Sweden on the whole, the number is 44 %. Furthermore, 42% of the foreign-owned companies in the Göteborg Region established their new companies through a new establishment, such as a branch or an AB (aktiebolag or corporation). The number on a national level is 45 %. This is a change from previous years when the Göteborg Region differed from Sweden on the whole by having a majority of foreign-owned companies entering the region through acquisitions. The number of acquistions has decreased in the Göteborg Region while the number of new establishment has increased. For several years, Norway has been the country with the most companies in the region. Considering the favorable exchange rate, similarities in language and Norway s proximity to Sweden in general and the west of Sweden in particular, it is no surprise to find Norway at the top of this list. Since 2006 the Norwegian presence has increased by approximately 50 companies each year. This is equal to a 13 % increase between 2008 and 2009. Today we have a total of 441 Norwegian companies. Many of the new Norwegian companies are in either retail and wholesale trade, or construction and real estate. Germany is also a country that has always placed near the top. In 2004, Germany even headed the list, but since then the number of German companies in the region has stagnated. Norway has taken over the leading position by far. Germany has stayed at the same level as it was back in 2004 and is now represented in the region by 250 companies. Despite a small decrease in the number of German companies represented in the Göteborg Region, Germany places second on the list with many companies working in sectors such as retail and wholesale trade and construction and real estate. The automotive sector is also significant. This year, the UK ranked number three as a result of switching places with Denmark which is now number five on this list. Events such as the Think Britain festival arranged in June 2010 clearly pointed out that the UK has great interest in the Göteborg Region. The UK is not an unfamiliar country to the region. Trade across the North Sea has been of vast importance in the growth of the port of Göteborg for nearly three hundred years. The influence of this trade on commerce and social life in Göteborg is reflected in the city sometimes being called Little London. Most of the 228 British companies represented in the region work within retail and wholesale trade or management consulting and marketing. The US has had approximately 220 companies for several years. This year there are 223 companies from the US in the region, so the level is almost constant. A majority of the American companies in the Göteborg Region are working in retail and wholesale trade. Several companies are to be found in the information and communications, IT and electronics sectors. In spite of being one of our neighbours, Denmark, after having had an increasing number of companies here, is now back to the level of the year 2004. Denmark is therefore now fifth instead of third on this list. About half of the 205 Danish companies work in retail and wholesale trade. The transport and logistics sector is also a significant sector for Danish companies in the area. 9

There are therefore more foreign-owned employment locations than foreign-owned companies. TABLE 3 lists both the number of companies and the number of employment locations for the 10 top countries in the Göteborg Region. Most of the top 10 countries have increased both the number of companies and the number of employment locations between 2008 and 2009. The most important exceptions are Germany and Denmark. Note that the ranking concerning number of employment locations is not identical with the ranking of number of companies. The countries with most employment locations are: Norway, the UK, Germany, Denmark and the US in that order. Photo: Jonatan Fernström 10

This means that China is now the country with the most employees in the Göteborg Region and the UK has more employees than the US. The rest of the list is the same. The Göteborg Region FOREIGN-OWNED COMPANIES 2010 THE LIST There is considerable business activity in the Göteborg Region. Companies merge, close down and establish every week. The list of foreign-owned companies presented here is based on data from Statistics Sweden and inputs from the municipalities in the region. Data about companies is volatile - new companies start up every month as well as some companies might close down. Usually we do not change the data Statistics Sweden produces. However this time a radical change, not yet registered by Statistics Sweden, took place. The Chinese company Geely acquired Volvo from Ford. As mentioned before, in consideration to this being a major event for our region, we have adjusted this data so that the report is up to date. As stated earlier, several countries have entered our region during the past year. There are also some countries that previously had a presence in the Göteborg Region but that are no longer here. These countries are Bahrain, Monaco, Peru, Slovenia and Taiwan. Worth noting is that Cyprus has doubled the number of companies in the region. Additionally, quite a few companies in our region have switched owner countries. Luxemburg, the Virgin Islands and Jersey are countries with traditionally high renewals of companies. Here is the list of foreign-owned companies in the Göteborg Region by country.
