From the 1730s until 1776, there were both silver and copper dalers issued as notes and coins (with a relationship of 1:3). During this period, the unit of account was the riksdaler, which equalled 3 silver dalers (or 9 copper dalers). In 1776, there was a depreciation of the notes and 1 riksdaler specie became 6 silver dalers or 18 copper dalers. The riksdaler became the major form of currency from this date, thus the column REVTOT5 represents the conversion of total revenue figures in silver dalers to riksdalers (see Lennart J rberg, A history of prices in Sweden, 1732-1914 (Lund, 1972), p. 81). These have been converted to riksdalers at a rate of exchange of 1 riksdaler=3 silver dalers (J rberg, i, p. 81). In Table IV, vol.i, p. 80, J rberg gives a breakdown of the different denominations of notes in circulation between 1741 and 1775. Until 1742, the denominations of the notes in circulation was exclusively in units of 50 copper dalers or more. In 1743, notes denominated in 36 and 24 copper dalers were issued, followed in 1745 by denominations in 12, 9 and 6 copper dalers. An increasingly large proportion of the note issue consisted of small denominations eg. from 1759 to 1775, with the exception of 1770, they always made up more than 50% of the total. In 1776, a silver standard was introduced, with a new type of silver coin called riksdaler specie, and the riksdaler became the major form of currency. In 1789, the silver standard was more or less put out of operation because of the issue of Exchequer notes (riksdaler riksg lds), but another form of riksdaler notes was in circulation, the riksdaler banko, and these were at a premium because they were redeemable in silver. There was no fixed value relationship between the two forms of riksdaler notes. Thus NOTSILT represents the total of notes in circulation between 1741 and 1775; the total of notes and silver coins in circulation between 1776 and 1788; and the total of two types of notes in circulation between 1789 and 1803. g102swm1.tab Data Set Name: \RJB\SWEDEN\SWEM001 Type: Observations: 88 Record Len: 147 Variables: 18 Label: Revenues of the Swedish state, 1722-1809 Date created: 26 February 1992
