I found UCL s studies very extensive, most of the time i enjoyed it but sometimes i struggled to attain my desired score on exams. I really enjoyed the depth of the knowledge of the teachers and the system of having a seminar following every lecture. I found the IT support for students in the beginning really exasperating but very soon i got impressed with it. The reading lists were made available online such that students did not have to log into the library to find out if the reading material is available and most links opened into independent or university provided files of reading material. The system of assessment was largely two essays for every course that had to be submitted by a very strict deadline. Writing the essays during the course work was a bit too demanding for some, but the teachers were always there to help and offered the opportunity to advised on and discuss the essay before you write the final version. I really appreciate the quality of the courses and was really pleased with the teachers over all. Orientation and reception 11. The welcoming days at UCL for Affiliate students as they call the exchange students are divided in two different experiences. There is the experience before registration of courses and one after. Before the registration the talks given by our co-ordinators, the university administration and all is meant to impress us and make one feel lucky to have landed in UCL. They take students very seriously and give tours of the university and talks and security matters. The registration with the department you are admitted to and selecting courses is the most daunting task as the departments usually advise that you make take courses from any department after consulting with that particular department. You can be saved the hassle if you start doing that research before hand and make best use of the s from your coordinator as they come. Then follows the fun part.

2 There are many fairs for the students to get to know the environment, students hang out places on campus, societies, cafes etc. Welcome fairs are not to be missed as there students get an opportunity to be on trips outside and within London, cheap theater and movies tickets and many such things. That is the part where one really starts an enjoyment that continues till the end of the exchange period. Accommodation 12. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I arranged a private accommodation with my partner who arranged it all by himself so i can not offer an informed advice on it. However, it helps to join social networks like facebook groups where people keep posting relevant offers and information. There is a facebook group for international exchange students for every year. Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? I did not take part time work, i did not have a CSN but the Erasmus Scholarship covered expenses for almost one and half month of my stay there. Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? There was always a lot going on in the university. In was living away from campus so i missed out on a lot but there was always something or the other to do. It was not the case that i ever had little to do and i got bored on the contrary there was too much to do and i had to make time for myself. Your exchange on a whole 15. The best part was studies for me. I will advise that when on exchange one must always try to look for courses other than their usual degree track as that really broaden ones academic horizons and abilities and adds to the excitement. Examinations. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. The structure of the studies at UCL are quite dierent from how they are in Sweden. I went there for the spring term only, which is actually divided into two terms at UCL.I had classes during the second term, from the beginning of January until the end of March. We then had a spring break for a month and then the third term started, which is the exam term. It diers when you nish with exams depending on what classes you take. I nished very early, in the beginning of May. It was quite dierent for me to have all the exams at the same time, since in Uppsala you have exams throughout the term. However, you have quite a lot of time to study for them so it was okay. It also depends on what classes you take whether you have less or more exams. I had quite a good mix of essay based and exam based courses, so I had some essays to write during the second term and some exams in the third term. The courses I took were all very interesting and the teachers are knowledgeable and dedicated to their subjects. Students are encouraged to be active in the teaching and think critically. The education at UCL is denitely of high quality. Orientation and reception 11. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: How you were welcomed as an exchange student. Orientation, information, activities. There are two orientation days for international students before the term starts. They were very helpful. They gave us a lot of information about what to expect and how to make the best of your studies at UCL. They also informed us about services connected to UCL such as the career service, volunteering service and the UCL union. We also go the chance to enroll as students at UCL, meet our departments and sign up for courses. It's also a good way to meet other international students. The UCL union arranged activities in the evenings of the orientation days as well. I found it quite dicult to sign up for courses. If you go to UCL from Uppsala you have to be in the Scandinavian Studies department, which means you have to take 50

4 This was something that I kind of freaked out about in the beginning of the term, but it all worked out in the end. So don't let that stop you from going to UCL, because you will be registered for enough courses! Accommodation 12. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satised? Do you have any tips for future students? If you only go for a term, the school doesn't guarantee accommodation. So you have to be prepared to look for accommodation for yourself. I was almost certain that I wouldn't get accommodation from the university. I gured that there has to be so many people that want accommodation that I had no chance. However, I ended up getting accommodation at a student residence called Astor College. I also know many other people that came for the spring term that got student accommodation, so it might not be as dicult as I thought from the beginning. I thought Astor College was a great place to live. It's the cheapest option of student residences that UCL oers (still more expensive than what we Uppsala students are used to) and it has a great location. It's a 10 minute walk away from UCL and it's also within walking distance from many central places in London. If you're only going to UCL for a term I suggest you start looking for other options of accommodation early. Look at UCL's website, they have some useful links for other accommodation services. Rent is probably the only thing that is more expensive than in Uppsala and since I managed to get a place relatively cheap, I think that helped a lot. My rent was about crowns more expensive than in Uppsala. It might be dicult to nd a place that cheap, so if you live somewhere a bit more expensive you might struggle more. But you do get more CSN and the erasmus money as well, so it should be ne. Although I had some money saved which may have helped as well, so if you are able to save up some money before that is a plus. Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on oer? Well, it's London, so there's loads to do in your free time! I really advice you to take time to explore the dierent parts of London, it's an amazingly diverse city! Whatever you like doing, you will denitely nd something you like. All the dierent parts have a dierent character to it. I think my favourite thing in London was all the markets, they are simply amazing! The student life might not measure up to the standards of Uppsala, but there are a few student pubs which oer cheap drinks. There are special events sometimes, such as comedy nights (they are really good!) and karaoke. There is also something called 'Give it a Go', that organises dierent events such as dierent walking tours around London, cheap tickets for musicals and day trips to cities outside of London. I went on a bunch of 'Give it a Go' events and they were all really fun! Trust me when I say you won't run out of things to do!

Going on an exchange is denitely a great thing to do, and I really recommend going to London. It's a great city, there's so much to do and I guarantee you will have a wonderful experience! I experienced that the schedule at UCL are generally not that busy in comparison to Uppsala, you usually don't have that much scheduled school time. However, you are expected to do more work in your spare time. The UCL campus is concentrated to an area in London whereas the Uppsala campus is spread out across the city. AT Uppsala you usually have your exams directly after a course has ended, UCL on the other hand have all the exams concentrated to the third and last term. Therefore, the exams for the autumn courses take place in May-June next year. The teachers were really nice and helpful. You could always be sure that they would do their best to help you if had any questions or problems. The relationship between teachers and students was relaxed and good. Overall I experienced the examination period as good, and the exam questions to be relevant to subject studied. However, the examination venue could be far away from the university or where you normally had classes, it could be hard to nd and it could take you some time getting there. The level of the courses was good, and the quality of the courses was overall high. There were many computer cluster rooms spread out across the campus, you were never far away from a computer Orientation and reception 11. I lived at James Lighthill House in a corridor with four people. The kitchen was shared but I had my own bathroom. The accommodation was really good, well situated close to King's Cross. It was clean, fairly quiet and the rooms were really nice. The rent was quite expensive, but that's just what to expect in London. The university oered a lot of activities after school, eg dierent societies and sports. Wednesday afternoons are always free from classes to leave time for sport practice. There are student bars close to campus and there are trips organized to nearby attractions and cities, such as Oxford and Warwick Castle throughout the year. Except for activities organized by the school there were plenty of other things to do and see in London it is such a big city and there is always happening Your exchange on a whole 15. An exchange year is such a great experience and London is an amazing city to live in, I am so happy with my choice of city to go to. London is a mix of old and new, very multicultural and there is always something going on. I have improved my English so much during this year. Den största skillnaden mellan Uppsala och UCL är hur undervisningen går till. Vid UCL är en termin bara 11 veckor, med en veckas lov i mitten. Under de 10 undervisningsveckorna läser du dina valda kurser parallellt, vanligtvis fyra stycken 7,5hp. För er som läser hela läsåret så kommer de kurserna tillsammans med de tillkommande fyra termin 2 att tentas av i termin 3 som är i maj. Många av de skandinaviska kurserna är mindre och därför går det fort att skapa en närmre relation till lärare och studenter. För de större kurserna, ex. management accounting, så nns det också möjlighet att få detta eftersom de kurserna oftast har obligatoriska seminarium i mindre storlek. I stora drag upplevde jag att undervisningen vid UCL var mer pedagogisk och intressant upplagd, att vi varje vecka hade mindre hemuppgifter gjorde också att man hela tiden hängde med. Något som var lite kämpigt för oss som är vana med att tenta av en kurs i taget var att alla tentorna var samlade i maj. Men så länge man är förberedd med anteckningar från kurserna och lägger upp sin tid rätt så går det. Vissa kurser är också helt uppsatsbaserade vilket innebär att man inte har någon tenta i slutet utan vanligtvis bara två uppsatser som lämnas in under termin 1 och 2. De skandinaviska kurserna låg på en skaplig nivå och så länge man har ett intresse för ämnet så är det inte så svårt att hänga med. Lärarna är också väldigt duktiga på att hjälpa till med att förklara oklarheter utanför lektionstid. Tillgången till datorer har varit lika som i Uppsala, dvs. det nns cluster rooms med datorer och skrivare på många ställen runt campus och även i vissa studentboenden. Orientation and reception 11. UCL har lyckats bra med att introducera nya studenter till skolan och allt vad den erbjuder. Redan innan jag kom till London ck jag hemskickat information om vad som skulle hända de första veckorna av terminen och vart

9 jag skulle gå första dagen för att skriva in mig. Väl vid skolan fanns det många faddrar som informerade oss om vart alla lokaler låg, hur man kunde involvera sig i olika sporter eller andra intresseklubbar osv. Alla utbytesstudenter hade även mindre event utanför alla freshers event som gjorde att vi ck tillfälle att lära känna de andra som också yttat till London. Accommodation 12. Om du är helårsstudent så är du nästan garanterad studentboende vid någon av UCLs många anläggningar. Om du får ett erbjudande så kan du tyvärr inte välja mellan vilka hus du vill bo i utan du blir allokerad till ett baserad på de önskemål du angivit i ansökningen. Jag ck James Lighthill House för att jag ville ha eget badrum och jag har trivts bra här. Delat kök med fem andra och det gick väldigt fort att lära känna dom. Det här boendet är dessvärre det dyraste bland alla hus och det har tagit extra på budgeten. Om man har tid och lite kunskap om staden så kan det löna sig att försöka få tag på ett privat boende istället eftersom dom ibland kan vara billigare. Som tidigare sagt så har hyran för mitt rum varit väldigt dyr. Jag har betalat mer än dubbla hyran mot det jag betalade för en del i dubblett på Studentvägen hemma och CSN har inte räckt för att klara både hyra och nöjen här. London är en dyr stad att bo i och det är bra att ha något slags sparkonto och stipendiebidrag när man kommer hit. Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? UCL Union är de som står för fritidsarrangemangen vid skolan. Vid era tillfällen följde vi med på utykter till ställen som Oxford, Cambridge och Bath. Resorna kostar inte så mycket och de ligger på helgerna vilket utgör en perfekt möjlighet att få komma bort från storstan en stund. UCLU erbjuder också billigare priser på bl.a. musikaler och klubbar. Ett bra sätt att lära känna nya studenter omkring dig är att gå med i någon av de många föreningarna som nns vid skolan. Ett bra tips innan du kommer till London är att ta en titt på vilka kurser du kan läsa som utbytesstudent. De rekommenderar att du läser fyra kurser på termin och det är upp till dig själv att se till att kurserna inte kolliderar med varandra i ditt schema. Välj även ut några SELCS och ELCS kurser (obligatoriska skandinaviska och europeiska kurser) så att du inte riskerar att hamna på någon kurs du inte vill ha för att de andra blev tagna.

I lived at James Lighthill House in a corridor with four people. The kitchen was shared but I had my own bathroom. The accommodation was really good, well situated close to King's Cross. It was clean, fairly quiet and the rooms were really nice. The rent was quite expensive, but that's just what to expect in London. The university oered a lot of activities after school, eg dierent societies and sports. Wednesday afternoons are always free from classes to leave time for sport practice. There are student bars close to campus and there are trips organized to nearby attractions and cities, such as Oxford and Warwick Castle throughout the year. Except for activities organized by the school there were plenty of other things to do and see in London it is such a big city and there is always happening Your exchange on a whole 15. An exchange year is such a great experience and London is an amazing city to live in, I am so happy with my choice of city to go to. London is a mix of old and new, very multicultural and there is always something going on. I have improved my English so much during this year. Den största skillnaden mellan Uppsala och UCL är hur undervisningen går till. Vid UCL är en termin bara 11 veckor, med en veckas lov i mitten. Under de 10 undervisningsveckorna läser du dina valda kurser parallellt, vanligtvis fyra stycken 7,5hp. För er som läser hela läsåret så kommer de kurserna tillsammans med de tillkommande fyra termin 2 att tentas av i termin 3 som är i maj. Många av de skandinaviska kurserna är mindre och därför går det fort att skapa en närmre relation till lärare och studenter. För de större kurserna, ex. management accounting, så nns det också möjlighet att få detta eftersom de kurserna oftast har obligatoriska seminarium i mindre storlek. I stora drag upplevde jag att undervisningen vid UCL var mer pedagogisk och intressant upplagd, att vi varje vecka hade mindre hemuppgifter gjorde också att man hela tiden hängde med. Något som var lite kämpigt för oss som är vana med att tenta av en kurs i taget var att alla tentorna var samlade i maj. Men så länge man är förberedd med anteckningar från kurserna och lägger upp sin tid rätt så går det. Vissa kurser är också helt uppsatsbaserade vilket innebär att man inte har någon tenta i slutet utan vanligtvis bara två uppsatser som lämnas in under termin 1 och 2. De skandinaviska kurserna låg på en skaplig nivå och så länge man har ett intresse för ämnet så är det inte så svårt att hänga med. Lärarna är också väldigt duktiga på att hjälpa till med att förklara oklarheter utanför lektionstid. Tillgången till datorer har varit lika som i Uppsala, dvs. det nns cluster rooms med datorer och skrivare på många ställen runt campus och även i vissa studentboenden. Orientation and reception 11. UCL har lyckats bra med att introducera nya studenter till skolan och allt vad den erbjuder. Redan innan jag kom till London ck jag hemskickat information om vad som skulle hända de första veckorna av terminen och vart

17 jag skulle gå första dagen för att skriva in mig. Väl vid skolan fanns det många faddrar som informerade oss om vart alla lokaler låg, hur man kunde involvera sig i olika sporter eller andra intresseklubbar osv. Alla utbytesstudenter hade även mindre event utanför alla freshers event som gjorde att vi ck tillfälle att lära känna de andra som också yttat till London. Accommodation 12. Om du är helårsstudent så är du nästan garanterad studentboende vid någon av UCLs många anläggningar. Om du får ett erbjudande så kan du tyvärr inte välja mellan vilka hus du vill bo i utan du blir allokerad till ett baserad på de önskemål du angivit i ansökningen. Jag ck James Lighthill House för att jag ville ha eget badrum och jag har trivts bra här. Delat kök med fem andra och det gick väldigt fort att lära känna dom. Det här boendet är dessvärre det dyraste bland alla hus och det har tagit extra på budgeten. Om man har tid och lite kunskap om staden så kan det löna sig att försöka få tag på ett privat boende istället eftersom dom ibland kan vara billigare. Som tidigare sagt så har hyran för mitt rum varit väldigt dyr. Jag har betalat mer än dubbla hyran mot det jag betalade för en del i dubblett på Studentvägen hemma och CSN har inte räckt för att klara både hyra och nöjen här. London är en dyr stad att bo i och det är bra att ha något slags sparkonto och stipendiebidrag när man kommer hit. Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? UCL Union är de som står för fritidsarrangemangen vid skolan. Vid era tillfällen följde vi med på utykter till ställen som Oxford, Cambridge och Bath. Resorna kostar inte så mycket och de ligger på helgerna vilket utgör en perfekt möjlighet att få komma bort från storstan en stund. UCLU erbjuder också billigare priser på bl.a. musikaler och klubbar. Ett bra sätt att lära känna nya studenter omkring dig är att gå med i någon av de många föreningarna som nns vid skolan. Ett bra tips innan du kommer till London är att ta en titt på vilka kurser du kan läsa som utbytesstudent. De rekommenderar att du läser fyra kurser på termin och det är upp till dig själv att se till att kurserna inte kolliderar med varandra i ditt schema. Välj även ut några SELCS och ELCS kurser (obligatoriska skandinaviska och europeiska kurser) så att du inte riskerar att hamna på någon kurs du inte vill ha för att de andra blev tagna.

18 Allt som allt har min tid vid UCL här i London varit en riktigt bra upplevelse, jag har lärt känna många nya människor från olika länder och fått känna på hur det är att bo i en sån här stor internationell stad.
