KURSER Grundnivå FYSA11, Physics 1: General Physics, 30,0 ECTS Beskrivning (till katalog): Om du vill prova på fysik eller redan är övertygad om att fysik är ditt ämne, så är detta din kurs. Den rekommenderas också för de studenter som inriktar sig på annat ämne, men vill ha en breddning inom fysiken. One motivation is that this source contributes with more than 85% of all the energy supply in the world, and the energy usage increase globally by 3% per year. Another motivation is that knowledge in combustion is important for the modern engineer to be able to make combustion processes more efficient and to develop them to produce less pollutants, such as hydrocarbons, particles and nitrogen oxides. Thus, we need to study combustion processes. Research on alternative fuels also enables a transition to a future sustainable society. This course aims at providing the basics for understanding combustion phenomena. This includes thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, ignition, fluid dynamics and the formation of pollutants. From the knowledge in these areas it is possible to reach an understanding for energy related and environmental problems connected to real life combustion. This knowledge is central for a large number of clinical diagnostic tools as well as laser based treatments. Biomedical optics is a fast developing field of research and the medical industry will require people with this knowledge in the near future. More specifically, the course deals with light propagation in strongly scattering media, analytical and numerical solution of diffusion equations, Monte Carlo simulations and heat transfer equations. Measurements of the properties of strongly diffusive media e.g. the temperature distribution in tissue following laser irradiation. The course includes 2 laboratory sessions: Fluorescence Imaging and Time-resolved diffuse reflectance, and 2 computer exercises dealing with the diffusion equation and Monte Carlo simulations, respectively. Literature: Much of the course is based on the book Optical Thermal Response of Laser Irradiated Tissue edited by A.J. Welch and M.J.C. van Gemert, complemented by information found on the net. Today our understanding is described by the Standard Model theory, which has an exceptional predictive power, but is incomplete. We explore the predictions of the Standard Model and seek a more complete understanding, i.e. beyond the Standard Model. In practice we conduct the research in global experimental collaborations. Today these experiments are mainly done at the LHC collider at CERN. At the Physics Department at Lund University the Particle Physics Division is involved in two major experiments at the LHC; ATLAS and ALICE.
