International relation/development, politics, sociology, language structure 9. Level of studies at the exchange university Undergraduate 10. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Teacher trainee programme 11. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 2 years Studies 12. Tell us about your studies on your exchange. If you are stuck for ideas you can for exemple write about: The differences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... One of the major differences between Sussex and Uppsala is that at Sussex you only have one 50 min lecture and one 50 min seminar a week. The lectures seem more rushed and do not cover as much as a lecture at Uppsala. Sussex has a good academic level in its modules, I had mostly taken linguistics courses at Uppsala which somewhat made choose first year modules which upheld a good entry level academiawise. Regarding examinations, they write a lot of essays which (normally) Swedish students are not very custom to. Studying linguistics, i was quite familiar with it. However, the last two weeks of term are exam weeks which means that if all the four modules have exam examination you will end up with four exams within two weeks.. I highly recommend to keep this in mind when looking at modules, maybe take one or two that do not have a written exam at the end. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. I arrived at Heathrow airport where the international office had arranged bus transfer to campus. At arrival, my luggage from Sweden was delayed and the Sussex greeting people were very sweet and helpful. Once at campus, they put us in smaller groups and took us to our blocks. During the first week at Sussex, the international office organized events where you could meet people.

Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I had en ensuite dorm, i.e. I had my own shower and toilet and shared kitchen with five other people. The flat was all you can ask for, small common room with kitchen which was big enough and a good space to hang out. The dorm was alright, being used to live in my own apartment I found it a bit claustrophobic in the beginning but soon got over it and, looking back at it, it was not a problem. On the one hand, it is a bit expensive to live in an ensuite. I paid 138 per week and even though all bills were included I still feel it was a bit much. On the other hand, it was really nice to have my own toilet and shower. Furthermore, living on campus made it really easy to meet a lot of people not having to think too much about bus timetables. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? I had the time to take on a part-time job, I had friends who did it but I decided not to. If you exclude rent, the living costs are pretty much the same as in Sweden, however I paid a monthly rent slightly more expensive than what I pay for a big one room apartment in Uppsala, including mortgages and bills. CSN was adequate on a student budget, i.e. pasta and noodles... I had saved up some money over the summer and also went home to work during Christmas break. If I would not have saved up over the summer or gone back home over Christmas break it would have been rough. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? There are loads of societies at Sussex to join, one for every taste. I joined the basketball society (team), the Italian society (learned to speak a bit Italian). I know that the international office organizes trips quite often but I never went, I meet people with whom I traveled with. Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. My experience here at Sussex has been amazing. I will bring back a lot of good memories. Academiawise, I took modules not in line with my degree which turned out very interesting. I met a lot of British as well as international people some who I honestly believe I will keep in touch with for a very long time. Sometimes I felt a bit homesick and I doubted my reasons for coming here but all in all I do not regret anything about this year. Approval 18. Your report will be available for future exchange students in printed form at the International Office and will be sent by email to individual students requesting it. What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations...

Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? UoS erbjuder utbytesstudenter boende i deras egna bostäder, men kunde endast garantera helårsstudenter rum.

Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer?

Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. Approval 18. Your report will be available for future exchange students in printed form at the International Office and will be sent by email to individual students requesting it. Examinations... I took courses in International Relations my exchange at Sussex. I am very pleased with my selection of courses since they all represented different ways to study and practice International Relations. However, I felt it was difficult in the beginning to have 4 different courses at the same time, and not one at the time like we are used to in Uppsala. This was something I did get used to later on. It became easy to balance the courses since they all continued until the end of term. The teaching mostly consisted of one lecture a week and sometimes seminars. The main difference with the lectures was that some of the lecturers wanted us to have discussions, and even divide into groups sometimes and discuss. Other than that, the teachers really took into account what the students wanted to learn and how they learned the best way, and so on. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Sussex had a really good system to greet and meet new students. There was a bus service where they picked up exchange students from Heathrow Airport, there was also representatives from the university standing at the train station in Brighton telling you which train to take. Arriving at campus was also very easy because we got a bus taking us to the our accommodation. The residential advisors were waiting outside to greet us and to answer any questions we had. I felt it was easy to settle in because there was so many activities the first week that made you feel as a part of the university really quickly. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Me and another girl wanted to live in Brighton instead of the campus but found it difficult since most of the letting agents in the city wanted a contract for at least 9 months and we were only there for one term. And also because of that we were not guaranteed accommodation on campus, only full year students were. However, getting to know alot of students that were also there for only one term it seemed as if everyone who wanted accommodation on campus got it. I lived on campus in Norwich House, were I had a big room with a bed, sink, closet and table. I shared bathrooms and kitchen with 9 other students. Now thinking about it I am very glad to have lived on campus, it was were I had almost all my friends and so it was easy to always hang out, but it also took me 3 minutes to get to class. It was nice to always have people to spend time with, to be able to just go into the kitchen in my accommodation and find people there either cooking or just talking. I became really close with my flatmates so I can really say I was pleased with the accoommodation. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? My accommodation cost me around 5200 SEK a month, and I rented for 4 months. This was for very high for me considering I only had around 3000 in Uppsala for a shared apartment. I did have full CSN for the 4 months and actually found it quite adequate. We got the whole sum at once which required me to calculate how much I could spend each month. Also getting the Erasmus scholarship helped a bit. The money was enough for food, some trips planned by the school and to actually have a fun student life. Since there is alot of students i Brighton there was actually a lot of student discounts in shops and so on. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Sussex had the International Student Support who planned trips for international students only. I joined trips to Bath/Stonehenge, Oxford and the Harry Potter Studio Tour. These were very well planned with bus from campus and also with free time in each place. There was much more that they offered, and also some societies arranged trips that you could join if you joined the society. Other than the trips I did some other traveling to near places such as London, Lewes and Seven Sisters. I did feel there was enough free time and spent alot of it getting to know new people and also with friends exploring Brighton and Campus life. Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. To sum up my term at Sussex, it was some of the best months of my life! I think everyone who has the opportunity to go on an exchange programme should do it. You get to know so many people from different cultural, religious and educational backgrounds. Just to get to study in a different way gives you a perspective on things and will also help you in the future to ad more to your studies Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 207 av 396

at your home university. I believe I have learned many things during my studies at Sussex, and I have made friends all over the world. You don t only learn in your clases but you learn so much just by talking with your friends about their countries and cultures. One tip is to join societies because they are a good way to meet new people and make friends. If I get the chance to go on another exchange I wouldn t hezitate to go! Approval 18. What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... The biggest difference for me was that we had four courses at the same time, i m used with one course at a time. At Sussex, the teachers was very helpful, and really engaged with their subjects. All of my courses were in the subejct area Global Studies, and all my courses were really interresting and funny. I only took level 4 courses (first year), but actually I m in the third year, so the courses were qiute easy, but I think they where good, because I wanted to learn better english, that was the main reason for my exchange, so the level 4 courses were good for that. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. When I arrived, I got a really good welcoming. I lived at campus, and they had staff at the reception and at my house, whom helped me with my bags and the keyes. For me it was quite different to live in a dorm, but I got used to it after a while. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I lived at campus, in a dorm with 11 other persons. I m 22 years old and almost all of my roommates where 18/19. It was the first time away from home for many of them, so it was quite messy in our kitchen the whole time..

But except for that I was satisfied with the accomodation. It was nice to live at campus, it was close to the schoolbuildings, and it was not that hard to go down by bus to Brighton city. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? My rent was a lot higher in Brighton than at home. In Uppsala I payed 3300 kr for a two-roomed flat, that i shared, and in Brighton I payed around 5200 kr for a quite small room, with shared bathroom and kitchen. The money from CSN was just enough, but I traveld quite a lot during my stay, so if I hadn t done that, I could have spent more money on food or something else. I was not allowed to work during my stay because I got a scholarship from Erasmus, but with the extra money from the scholarship I didn t need to work. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? The school had a lot of activities, both for all students, and also only for exchange students. I went on four trips with the international office, for international students. We where to IKEA, Oxford, Bath&Stonehenge and to the Harry Potter world in London, all of these trips where well organised and didn t cost that much. There were more trips, but I didn t go. Many of the different societies also had trips. Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. I am very satisfied with my excange at Sussex University. The main thing that was bad about my excange was that I was only there for one term, three months. I would have wanted to stay an extra term, just to be able to do everything I wanted, and also then I would have the opportunity to get to know the town and all the people there better. Approval 18.
