1. CSR from theory to practice. The scope is to make a CSR inventory of what we do today as a baseline and learn more about how other companies work with CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and sustainability. What are their strategies and how can we learn from them? One important part of the work is to measure our performance against the requirements in the ISO 26000 standard Guidance on Social responsibility and identify areas of improvements to be in full compliance with it. 2. Waste reduction non hazardous waste. As a pharmaceutical industry with strict GMP regulations waste management is a challenge. We have two major waste streams on site, one is hazardous waste and the other is non-hazardous waste. Each of them consists of many different waste fractions. Focus on this work will be on reduction of non-hazardous waste and general waste handling improvements. The scope is to look deeper into our Non-hazardous waste streams and identify opportunities for improvements and actions to reduce waste volumes, environmental impact and costs together with relevant stakeholders. 3. Continuous Operation in gum manufacturing. Currently, we are running a batch process: We weigh raw materials, add them into a mixer, after mixing, we extrude the mass and separate them as loafs, the loafs are sitting for 8-12 hours, after that they are rolled and scored, and later broken, sorted and printed before they are put into larger bags prior packaging. This process could be managed in a continuous flow from raw materials to bulk gum pieces as the extrusion process is continuous in the plastic industry already. The project should investigate current available technical solutions and maybe include a benchmark visit at a major gum manufacturer (e.g., Wrigleys). A visit at our equipment supplier can also be taken into consideration. The outcome should be a suggestion or position paper on investments, requirements for buildings and organizational prerequisites. This thesis is for 2 persons. 1. Credits, 30 At least 2. 5. Packaging Logistic evaluation of Packaging System McNeil AB in Helsingborg ships its products worldwide. This creates great demands on our packaging system being designed to meet the requirements of the logistics flow (e.g. transportation, handling, storage). Both on the individual packages (primary, secondary and transport packaging, etc.), as well as on how they are packed in each other and on pallets. The flow requirements to be considered are: Product protection Volume and weight efficiency Flow information Adapted quantity-right size Handleability Nicorette smoking cessation products have been around for many years and the packaging solutions and pallet patterns have often been based on previous solutions and thus not always been optimal from a packaging logistics perspective. Moreover, the preconditions have in many cases changed without the packaging solutions being changed correspondingly. McNeil AB therefore sees a need of having our packaging system studied from a packaging logistics perspective with regard to above mentioned flow requirements. We see this as an excellent opportunity for preferable two students in Packaging Logistics to receive a practical experience of the complex reality and the existing potential for improvements of a global business. We expect the thesis to result in an evaluation and assessment of our packaging system as described above, including recommendations of possible improvements from a cost / benefit perspective. 1. 6. Cleaning in Place of Coating Pans McNeil AB är Helsingborgs näst största privata arbetsgivare med cirka 640 medarbetare. Coated Nicorette chewing gums are processed in coating pans consisting of a rotating drum and a spray arm in the center of the drum with several spray nozzles along the arm. The coating process consists of alternating spray and drying phases. During the spray phases the coating solution is introduced via the spray nozzles. During the drying phases, dry air is blown through the drum. The gum pieces are in rotating motion during all phases to facilitate even distribution of the coating solution and proper drying. The coating pans are cleaned after each campaign of maximum six batches. The cleaning of the pans consists roughly of manual removal of the gum pieces attached to the pan, followed by an automated cleaning with water and detergent (cleaning in place, CIP) and finally manual inspection of the pan to ensure that the pan has been properly cleaned (line clearance). As the manual part of the procedure is time consuming and contains substantial EHS risks for the operators McNeil would like to improve the current CIP process. The proposed thesis work aims to improve the current cleaning process in order to replace the manual cleaning with a more efficient CIP. The thesis could investigate the subject in different aspects; chemically by finding a more efficient cleaning agent and/or fluid mechanically by optimizing cleaning spray ball type and arrangement. 1.
