How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 3,5 år Studies 12. Tell us about your studies on your exchange. If you are stuck for ideas you can for exemple write about: The differences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students?

Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Your exchange on the whole 17. Approval 18. If you are stuck for ideas you can for exemple write about: The differences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... Generally, the studies was really good at the university. The courses: I found the quality of the courses very good and the level of them was reflected in the course code (for example 301 for an intro course and a higher number for more advanced ones). The teachers: The teachers all seamed to like teaching and were very motivating during the lectures, this was one thing I can miss in Uppsala. They all seamed very competent within their subject. One advice is to see what grades different teachers have gotten from former students before choosing specific courses. I think the university have their own grading system where students can grade the professors but there are also other services such as ratemyprofessors.com. One big plus is that all teachers have office hours when you can go to the professor and ask them to clarify things that you dont understand. Especially, I would like to recommend Sinan Dogramaci who teaches philosophy, he s an awesome teacher! TA:s (teaching assistants): This is something I recommend for Swedish universities. It was nice to always have someone who you could ask and was employed to answer your questions. Also, the classes with the TA:s was very good to go deeper into what was on the last lecture and have more of a seminar on the different topics. The libraries: There were many libraries around campus so there were no shortage of places to sit and study. One big drawback was the A/C that, in my and the other swedes opinion, made the indoors too cold. The Battle Hall and Life Science Libraries were the best! Very nice architecture and interior. The libraries also had very good opening hours. Workload: If you wanted to read everything there was in the courses, I think the workload would ve been larger than in my program in Uppsala. However it was very easy to study strategically for the exams and also very easy to just pass the courses in my experience. In one course for example, I didn t read a single page in the Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 340 av??

Enskilda enkäter för Utbytesrapport/Exchange Report whole (and only) textbook and still managed to get an A. But maybe it s just the courses on undergraduate level that allows for this kind of studying. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. I arrived to Austin late in the evening and there was no way of getting to my hostel by public transportation so I had to take a cab. If I had heard about Planet Longhorn I would definitely have asked them to pick me up. So check out Planet Longhorn! It s an international students organisation that help exchange students feel welcome and do a lot of trips and other fun stuff, especially during the first couple of weeks. The heat was exhausting and terrible in the beginning. Fortunately there was A/C everywhere but many times it was too cold in my opinion. It was great that you could ride the buses for free with your UTEID. But if you want to be more flexible you should get a bike. Check out Orange Bike Project if you re just looking to rent a bike for a good price. Otherwize, Craigslist.org is the best place for finding a bike. The orientation and reception from the University was well organized and I felt very welcome. The international office made me feel that I could turn to them with whatever questions that arose. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? It was a bit confusing to find a place to stay. There are so many options and its hard to get an overview of them all. Just among real estate agents theres a jungle. However, I think they all have access to the same database listing apartments for rent and the rent that the different real estate agents offer on the same property doesnt differ that much I think. I thought that the real estate agents would charge people for finding them places to stay but it doesnt work that way so dont be scared to contact them and check out some places. Besides finding housing through real estate agents there are also places to find on Craigslist. The rent was a lot higher than in Uppsala (typically around 700-800 dollars + utilities) but the standard of living is usually also higher. Personally, I wanted to live in a house on North campus since West campus seemed to loud with all the sororities/fraternities and parties. There were some nice options but I had some trouble finding roommates for a full house so I ended up living with an american working guy up in Hyde Park. It was a really nice neighborhood but the house was not that cozy and it was too far away from Campus and West campus, especially when you wanted to go downtown. A lot of times my social life was affected by me not living close to all other exchange students living on West Campus. Most of the exchange students lived in co-op:s. When I found my housing I felt I was to old to live in a coop and wanted some peace and quiet for myself, but in retrospect I definitely would rather have lived in one of the coops or in an apartment on West Campus. I got the impression that Taos coop and the coops in the Laurel coop building was nice. Living in a coop was cheap, you made a lot of friends and many meals was included in the rent. This turned out to be pretty important since they don t have smaller grocery stores the way we do in Sweden. You have go pretty far to a big store, the equivalent to ICA Maxi, to find normal groceries to reasonable prices. The downside of living in a coop might be that the rooms are pretty small. If you want to live in an apartment I recommend that you check it out when you have arrived before you sign a contract. But if you think you would enjoy living in a coop, I suggest that you apply as soon as possible. If you want a place to stay for the first couple of days or weeks while you search for a place to stay I recommend Firehouse hostel and/or finding a place on AirBnB. Enskilda enkäter för Utbytesrapport/Exchange Report Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? I took an extra loan from CSN for the flight ticket. Since I got a lot more money from CSN during my stay in Austin compared to what I would have gotten in Sweden I thought that I would live like a prince, however I think I had about the same living standard as I do in Sweden. Since it was pretty difficult to shop groceries and cook and then store and heat the food on campus and no one else did it, I ate out a lot and that was a big expense. But it was also pretty luxurious to be able to do that. People said that it was soo cheap eating out compared to for example Sweden but the average cost of a simple lunch was about 7 dollars. If you then add taxes and tips you end up at about 9 dollars which isn t that much cheaper than a lunch in any of the restaurants in the university buildings in Uppsala. The rent was a lot higher than in Uppsala, but with the extra loan from CSN you got by pretty well. If you want to do any extra trips or do a lot of shopping (which I estimate is about 30% cheaper when it comes to clothes and electronics) I think it s a good idea to be prepared to bring some extra money. However, as I wrote earlier, I think there is a lot of money to be saved by living in a coop. There was a lot of partying going on but the beer and booze is really cheap compared to Sweden, especially in the bars and during special nights, for example Thirsty Thursday. The cell phone costs were about twice as high as in Sweden for me. You had to pay like 100 dollars for the gym and pool which was nice. It was usually cramped so I recommend trying the other facilities, for example the gym in the stadium. You should be prepared to pay about twice as much for the books in the U.S, but it s pretty easy to sell them on afterwards if you want to. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? The were a lot of university sports clubs and intramural sports (equivalent to Studentserien) which was great. Personally, I joined the running club and the badminton club. However, since the A/C on campus was so bad I felt kind of ill most of the semester so I didn t even go to one running practice. I went to two badminton practices but the conditions of the courts, the low level of the players and the fact that you only got to play half of the time you were there made me give it up. I played some soccer in the intramural series with some other exchange students which I could really recommend, just remember to get a group of people together before the last day to register your team! Also, as I mentioned earlier, I could really recommend that you join Planet Longhorn, a student organisation that make some trips (for example to New Orleans and Dallas) and organize some parties, tail-gaiting etc. There you can make a lot of new friends to hang out with. If you like watching sports I recommend that you buy the sports package from the university which allows you to watch football, basketball, soccer and more. The movies was cheap, so you should take advantage of that. Especially Alamo Drafthouse has a special twist to the movie experience. There is also a bowling alley on campus (a bit hidden away) and some pool tables at the same place. Partying on Dirty 6th street is a must. But you should also try out east 6th, west 6th and Rainey Street. There is a bucket list for things to do in Austin which could be a nice way to experience the city, especially the culinary scene. Most of the things that had to do with school was good except the A/C that made me have some sort of cold for most of my stay which made me stay home some nights when my friends went out and that made it difficult to exercise the way I wanted. My living situation could ve improved my stay a lot I think. It was pretty hard to get to know the americans since we had so many classes separate and no time to get to know each other. But Im not sure I wouldve gotten to know them that much anyway since I felt a lot older than them and that we were so unlike each other. The other exchange students was easier to get to know since they were in the same situation as me and a bit older but most of them lived in coop:s and therefore mostly hung out among themselves. The fact that I lived so far away from Campus and West Campus many times made me skip going there after I had come home after school so I recommend living pretty close to campus and even if West campus isn t as nice looking or calm as North campus or Hyde Park, I still think would have been worth living there. One other thing that I think made me not enjoy my stay that much was the fact that my room and the house were I stayed was pretty un-homey. I think I underestimated how much I need my stuff from home and how intolerant I am to new living environments. In part I think it comes with age (I was 27 yo). The first couple of weeks, but also during most of the semester I felt like an old man who couldnt adapt to this new environment. The heat was a problem in the beginning. I was prepared for that, still it was pretty bad. Most students is pretty young (the americans 18-20 on undergraduate courses and exchange students 20-22) but I was prepared for that as well. All in all, I was the only one of 5 swedes who went home one semester earlier than intended so I think my experience was an exception. I also believe that my stay would ve improved the second semester if I had gotten a better housing situation but also since you get accustomed to the new life and culture, something which I felt toward the end of my stay. Still, at the end of my stay, I felt that four months was lagom and that it was nice to get back home. Part of this decision also came from the fact that I couldnt justify to myself spending the money to stay for another four months, studying just for fun since I couldnt tillgodoräkna mig any more credits. The architecture of Austin (and maybe most other american cities) isnt that beautiful. And it was a bit of a change from Uppsala to most of the time being in the middle of this bustling big city with all the cars and people. These things was nothing that bothered me that much but I did miss the closeness to nature and silence. During my stay in Austin I met some of the most colorful, generous and warmhearted people I have ever met and I liked the non-prestigious, non-judgmental attitude of most people compared to Sweden. This is something that I will carry in my heart and that I think it have affected me to wanting to become a nicer person. Approval 18. What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Study of Core Text and Ideas. Boende på West Campus något dyrare än i Uppsala. Annars mycket billigare än i Sverige. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. Approval 18.
