Innehåll Kursen omfattar två delkurser om 7,5 högskolepoäng vardera. Studenten läser två delkurser i paket som hösterminen 2012 ges enligt två modeller: 1. I paket som ges på halvfart över hela terminen ingår delkurserna: Management and Leadership 7,5 hp Strategy and Organization, 7,5 hp
4.1 Management and Leadership 7,5 högskolepoäng The advanced course unit Management and Leadership is based on empirical research on how management takes place in practice and the characteristics of successful managing. Every manager works in one or more groups, at varying organizational levels and with varying aims. They are managing groups and they are members of management teams. All managers thus need to develop their understanding and their skills to handle different work group situations and contexts. The purpose of the course unit is to develop generic skills such as ability to listen to people, talk to and motivate people, to take and give feedback, to handle conflicts, and to understand and cope with different problem areas related to the practice of management and leadership. The course unit focuses on managing relations, inter- and intragroup dynamics and work group development. Within this course unit, the participants are given the possibility to develop their skills as well as to study theoretical approaches to the central themes of the course unit. After completed course unit, the student will be able to: 1. critically analyze the implications of adopting different theoretical perspectives on work group performance and managerial action, 2. identify, diagnose and analyze the group processes and the group development stages in different contexts, which will be achieved through group exercises and seminar discussions, and 3. independently and systematically train and develop his or her own learning in different group settings, through role play sessions and seminar discussions. The qualitative targets for a degree of Master of Science (60 credits) in Business Administration relate to the course s learning outcomes. Qualitative targets Knowledge and understanding 1+2 Skills and abilities 2+3 Judgement and approach 2+3 Assessment Learning outcome 1 will be achieved by studying literature and discuss this in lectures and seminars. It will be examined through written examination. Learning outcome 2 will be examined through seminar papers and through the written exam.
3/ 6 Learning outcome 3 will be examined through an individual paper. Due to limited resources, learning outcomes 2 and 3 can only be assessed at fixed examination sessions during the course period. The language of examination is English. Grading scale The grades are Pass with Distinction (väl godkänd, VG), Pass (godkänd, G) or Fail (underkänd, U). For Pass, Pass is required on all three learning outcomes, including that the student must take part in at least 80% of the lectures and seminars of the course, deliver all seminar papers and the individual paper, and take part in the exam. All papers and the exam must be of passing quality. If the student gets ill or of other reasonable reason is absent, the responsible lecturer will give the student a special task to fulfill instead. If the student is absent from lectures and seminars more than stated above and/or for other reasons, the student will not pass the course. For Pass with Distinction, Pass with Distinction is required on all three learning outcomes. This means that graded reports and the exam must be done by showing a deeper understanding of the consequences of using different perspectives, by using literature extensively and by reflection about and analysis of one s own learning process. 4.2 Strategy and Organization, 7,5 högskolepoäng This advanced course unit in Strategy and Organization concerns how organizations meet and manage significant threats and challenges, both internally and externally. There is a rich scientific knowledge base on how companies perceive and make sense of emerging problems and opportunities. The course unit takes as a starting point in the knowledge acquired in previous courses in the field of Business Administration. Strategic problems and possibilities arise in all sectors. An important aspect is not only the company s positioning in relation to its market, but also the technological development, the supply of labour, political developments in society and other factors crucial for how organizations manage their business. There is a growing body of knowledge on how companies manage such factors. The purpose of this course unit is to apply this body of knowledge in analyses of business cases and to develop an intellectual understanding of the processes leading to strategic renewal as well as to apply this understanding to real current problems. The ambition is to prepare students to take part in business development and strategic work as experts and for them to be prepared, in later stages of their careers, to lead such processes. While knowledge of strategic processes emerges there is still a large market for simple rules of thumb in strategic work. Academic education aspires to equip students with a scientific approach and thereby to create a buffer against charlatarianism and managerialism. An important part of the course unit is to confront students with real strategic problems during the period of the course unit. One or two cases of strategic dilemmas will be analyzed. These cases will, as far as possible, be investigated and analysed in collaboration with the actual companies. After completing the course unit the students will be able to: 1. Critically discuss strategic issues by using scientific theories. 2. Apply these theories to analyse real cases and problems, in a written report.
3. Communicate analyses and recommendations to a qualified audience, such as the board of directors of a larger corporation. 4/ 6 The qualitative targets for a degree of Master of Science (60 credits) in Business Administration relate to the course s learning outcomes. Qualitative targets Knowledge and understanding 1+2 Skills and abilities 2+3 Judgement and approach 2+3 Assessment Learning outcome 1 will be examined through written exam. Learning outcome 2 will be examined through a written report. Learning outcome 3 will be examined through an oral presentation in front of an audience. Due to limited resources, learning outcomes 2 and 3 can only be assessed at fixed examination sessions during the course period. Grading scale The grades are Fail (Underkänd), Pass (Godkänd) or Pass with Distinction (Väl godkänd). The minimal requirement for the grade Pass is Pass on all learning outcomes, that is in order to pass the student needs minimum 50 percent of maximum points. In order to be marked as Pass with Distinction the student must receive at least 75 percent of maximum points. 4.3 Change Management 7,5 högskolepoäng Change Management deals with the conditions for managing change in organisations. The course unit takes as its starting point the definition of visions, missions and strategies for the future and discusses theories and methods concerned with how these may be translated into the practice of everyday life. This includes the role of different actors, problems of implementation, project management, participative change, learning, translation and diffusion and the consequences of change, at individual level and organisational level. After completing the course unit students will be able to understand the practical realities of change in modern organisations as well as analysing change from different theoretical perspectives. After completion of the course the student is expected to be able to: 1. Describe and analyse different perspectives of change and various scientific theories and models of change management in organisations. 2. Identify organisational problems and apply scientific theories and models for change 3. Critically discuss, analyse and evaluate change processes in organisations, 4. Present analyses of organizational change processes in a written report and an oral presentation. The qualitative targets for a degree of Master of Science (60 credits) in Business Administration relate to the course s learning outcomes.
5/ 6 Qualitative targets Knowledge and understanding 1 Skills and abilities 2+4 Judgement and approach 3 Assessment Learning outcome 1 will be examined through written exam. Learning outcome 2, 3 and 4 will be examined through a written report, and through an oral presentation in front of an audience. Due to limited resources, learning outcomes 2, 3 and 4 can only be assessed at fixed examination sessions during the course period. A student who has failed a test twice has the right to change examiner, unless weighty argument can be adduced. The application has to be in writing and shall be sent to the Department of Business Administration. Grading scale The grades are Pass with Distinction (väl godkänd, VG), Pass (godkänd, G) or Fail (underkänd, U). For Pass on the course, Pass is required on all learning outcomes. For Pass with Distinction on the course, Pass with Distinction is required on learning outcome one, and Pass on learning outcome two, three and four. 5.
