Strategic Research Area 1 Modelling of the relationships and interdependencies between materials microstructure, process ability and performance for lightweight design Phase II (Dec 2014 to Jan 2017) Lars-Erik Lindgren, Luleå University of Technology
The area New innovative lightweight materials and technologies are becoming increasingly complex often combining several materials in one structure. The manufacturing process can also be used to create graded properties within each class of materials enabling tailored properties at different regions of a component. Integration of materials science into computational mechanics and applied to integrated design of manufacturing process and product is necessary in order to achieve this.
The area: Models enabling lightweight design Experimental methods Mechanical testing Material characterisation Calibration of model parameters and their validation Material and process models Optimisation Innovative solutions Computational methods Constitutive models Microstructure model Thermodynamic modelling Mechanics Physics Materials Science Chemistry Reduced weight Better performance Faster development

Key factors currently six younger researchers (min 30%) Martin Fagerström, modelling of metals and composites, impacts and energy absoption, Chalmers Martin Fisk, microstructure models, physical based plasticity models, multiphysics, MaH Eduard Hryha, thermodynamic and kinetic modelling, characterisation, additive manufacturing, Chalmers Fang Liu, advanced material characterisation, Chalmers Andrejs Pupurs, micromechanical modelling of composites, fatigue, LTU Malin Åkermo, manufacturing and properties of composites, KTH, and
Key factors a number (5-10) of industrial researchers part of the cluster. Important mechanism for knowledge transfer to and from the first tier of companies connected to SRA1. Meeting place for researches from different areas and different companies with a common focus on lightweight and modelling. They will get fast access to the latest research in the area. Key researchers from industry will get access to next generation of research leaders in the area of lightweight from academia and other industries. They will together with academia form the future work in SRA1. They will together with academia initiate new projects. The cluster will also lead to new collaborations between industrial partners.
