2009 Season Highlights Illini Trio Taken in MLB Draft Junior shortstop Brandon Wikoff, senor third baseman Dominic Altobelli and senior center fielder Joe Bonadonna were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, with Wikoff being taken in the fifth round by the Houston Astros, Altobelli being selected in the 16th round by the Colorado Rockies and Bonadonna getting picked in the 43rd round by the Texas Rangers. Wikoff became the highest-drafted shortstop in program history and the three players drafted marked the most for Illinois since five Illini were selected in the 2005 draft. Illini Make Big Ten Tournament for Fifth-Straight Season Illinois reached its fifth-straight Big Ten Tournament in 2009, the second-longest active streak in the conference behind Ohio State s 12 consecutive appearances dating back to 1997. The Illini earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament and went 1-2, with a win over Michigan State before consecutive losses to No. 23 Ohio State and No. 24 Minnesota to end the season. Cappetta Named All-Big Ten Tournament Illinois right fielder Pete Cappetta was named to the All-Big Ten Tournament team, becoming the only player not from tournament champion Indiana, Minnesota and Ohio State to be named to the team. Cappetta hit.636 in three games with a 1.091 slugging percentage. He is Illinois second selection to the all-tournament team in as many years, following the selection of Kevin Manson in 2008. Cappetta had five RBIs, five runs and a.667 on-base percentage. Illini Win Series at #1 LSU Illinois proved that the old Alex Box Magic didn t appear early in the season in 2009 as No. 1 LSU welcomed the Illini to their new digs on the season s third weekend. Catcher Aaron Johnson blasted a two-run home run off the video board in left field in the top of the ninth of the series opener after freshman left-hander Corey Kimes struck out the middle of the Tigers order on 12 pitches in the eighth inning. Nick Chmielewski nailed down the save in the 3-1 win in the series first game. LSU fought back with a 22-10 loss in the middle game, but freshman right fielder Willie Argo stole the show with home runs in each of his first three collegiate at bats, finishing the day 3-for-3 with five RBIs and four runs after also walking on the day. In game three, senior right-hander Ben Reeser tossed 8 2/3 innings of shutout ball and Chmielewski got the last out in the ninth as Illinois clinched the series win with a 6-2 victory. It was Illinois first series win over a top-ranked team and the win in the series opener was the Illini s first victory over a top-ranked team since 1995. 5,214 Fans See Illini Beat OSU After rain threatened the area all morning, the clouds broke and Illini fans were treated to one of the greatest comebacks in school history when No. 25 Illinois scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to top No. 27 Ohio State, 5-4, in front of a schoolrecord 5,214 fans at the Bleacher Bum Barbecue. The Illini faithful poured into Illinois Field in droves, with lines beginning 90 minutes before game time. Fans were treated to free admission and the free food for the first 1,000 in attendance didn t last long. By game time, the crowd was buzzing. OSU broke out first, though, with a two-run homer in the first inning. But third baseman Dominic Altobelli s solo shot in the fifth got the crowd back in the game before the Buckeyes extended their lead to 4-1 in the eighth with another two-run homer. The Illini got a run back in the bottom half of the inning and reliever John Anderson set down OSU on seven pitches in the top of the ninth. Illinois needed a miracle as the bottom of its batting order faced Jake Hale, one of the best closers in the nation. With one out, right fielder Pete Cappetta walked and DH Willie Argo reached on an error by the third baseman. Pinch hitter Mike Giller grounded to second base in a likely double play, but Argo s hustle rattled the second baseman, who threw wildly to the bag, leaving the bases loaded with Illini. Center fielder Joe Bonadonna s base hit to center drove in two and tied the game, and left fielder Casey McMurray s liner through the right side brought home the winning run and set off fireworks as Illini fans reveled in the unlikely victory. illini Post Most Wins Since 2005 Illinois 34-20 record marked its best season since 2005 and its highest win total since the Illini went 41-23 in 2000. Illinois Slays the Giants The Fighting Illini found success against ranked foes in 2009, going 5-7 against ranked opponents with series victories against No. 1 and eventual College World Series champion LSU, and No. 23 Minnesota. 90 // 2010 Illinois Baseball

2009 Season Highlights Illini Collect Big Ten Honors Illinois had seven Big Ten Player or Pitcher of the Week honors this season, breaking a school record and tying the conference record for the most by a single school in a season. Second baseman Josh Parr, pitcher Ben Reeser, catcher Aaron Johnson, pitcher Will Strack, first baseman Matt Dittman, DH Willie Argo and shortstop Brandon Wikoff all brought home weekly awards in 2009. Illinois in National Polls The Fighting Illini were ranked six times in the Collegiate Baseball rankings in 2009. The Illini first jumped into the CB poll at No. 21 on March 9, moved to No. 19 on March 16, slipped to No. 25 on March 23 and were No. 26 on March 30 before falling out of the rankings the following week. Illinois reappeared in the polls on April 27 at No. 28 and moved up to No. 25 on May 4. Wikoff Won t Go Down Swinging Brandon Wikoff defied the cliché, as he wouldn t go down swinging. He was the second-toughest hitter to strike out in the nation, whiffing once every 32.6 at bats, behind only High Point catcher Billy Alvino s 52.5 at bats per strikeout (4 Ks in 210 ABs). Dom Delivers Daily Third baseman Dominic Altobelli had an incredible final 24 games of his career, raising his average 64 points while also posting a 16-game hitting streak from April 15-May 9 and a 13-game streak of multiple-hit games from April 18-May 8. After losing those two streaks, he went 10-for-31 in the last seven games. He also notched a team-best 27 multiple-hit games, tied for the most by an Illini since at least 1995 with Ryan Rogowski s 27 in 2005. Argo Drops Bombs Regularly Freshman DH Willie Argo led Illinois and ranked 12th in the Big Ten with 12 home runs, also tying the school record for homers by a freshman. Argo had a three-homer game at No. 1 LSU on March 7 and a two-homer game at Penn State on April 25. He also had a team-best.651 slugging percentage, which ranked third in the Big Ten. 2009 Illinois Award Winners Dominic Altobelli All-Big Ten first team third baseman Willie Argo Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America outfielder All-Big Ten third team outfielder Big Ten All-Freshman Team outfielder Big Ten Player of the Week (4/27) Sports Illustrated s Faces in the Crowd (3/23) Pete Cappetta All-Big Ten Tournament outfielder All-Big Ten second team outfielder Big East/Big Ten All-Tournament Honorable Mention Matt Dittman Big Ten Player of the Week (4/13) Aaron Johnson All-Big Ten third team catcher Johnny Bench Award watch list (5/4) Big Ten Co-Player of the Week (3/9) Josh Parr College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup (3/4) Big Ten Co-Player of the Week (3/2) Ben Reeser College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup (3/11) Big Ten Pitcher of the Week (3/9) Will Strack All-Big Ten Third Team starting pitcher Big Ten All-Freshman Team starting pitcher Big Ten Pitcher of the Week (3/30) Brandon Wikoff All-Ping! He popped out in the first inning before singling in the third, homering in the fourth, doubling in the fifth and tripling in the seventh. Sean Mulligan was the last Illini to hit for the cycle, doing it against Michigan on Feb. 25, 1990. 2010 Illinois Baseball // 91
