2 Biographical Note Theodorick Bland born in Dinwiddie County, Va., Bland was Chancellor of the State of Maryland. Giles-General of Customs. Edward-Collector of Customs. Theodorick-Chancellor of Customs. Bland and Alexander were partners in the practice of law. Scope and Content The Bland Papers consist of writings and correspondence by or related to Theodorick Bland. The collection is contained in 5 boxes. Box 1: Political observations and notes on real estate, the law and the constitutions of the United States. Box 2: contains an analysis of the Constitutions. Box 3: Papers related to law cases, a will for John Gibson, the Ledger of Thomas Stockett Alexander, Alexander s Chancery practice, and a sketch and Genealogy of Theodorick Bland. Box 4: Correspondence between various members of the Bland family, as well as letters from J.Q. Adams, James Monroe, and Andrew Jackson in relation to Bland s legal appointments. Box 5: Contains Bland s notes on his travels to South America and his report to J.Q. Adams in relation to these travels. Notes on legal matters, including cases tried in Tennessee, a genealogy for the Bland family, a catalog of books belonging to Theodorick Bland, notes on early American history and colonial history are also contained in Box 5.
