Enskilda enkäter för Utbytesrapport/Exchange Report Person 49 Basic Information 1. Name Harald Cavalli-Björkman 2. Exchange university University of Hong Kong 3. City Hong Kong 4. Country China 5. First semester of your exchange Swedish autumn semester (HT) 6. Academic year 2011/12 7. Level of studies at the exchange university Undergraduate 8. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Politices kandidat, economics 9. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 2 Studies 10. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: The dierences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? The relationship between teachers and students. Examinations. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. The main dierence is that you study 5 courses (full course load) at the same time, whereas in Uppsala you do one, or maybe two at once. This does not necessarily mean that you do ve times the amount of work, but it does make it necessary to manage your time eciently. Politics classes mostly have one lecture and one tutorial (seminar) session each week. Attendance is mandatory for the tutorial but not the lecture, although attending is highly recommended to not fall behind. Lecturers are for the most part keen on interacting with students throughout the sessions, and repeatedly invited us to visit them in their oces if we had any questions about the course. In my experience, professors were very quick to respond to emails, as were the tutorial teachers. The general quality of classes were very high, although exchange students were often the most active. This may be due to local Hong Kong students being less condent in debating in English. The form for examinations is up to each professor to decide, but mostly they consisted of tutorial participation, one or two longer written assignments and an end of semester exam. At the end of each semester students have one week to do revision, which is then followed directly by exams. If you are unlucky, you might get two or more exams on the same day. HKU is a modern and fully functioning campus, although some administrative processes I felt were a bit too bureaucratic. All students have free and easy access to computers in the library and dierent computer labs. During revision periods, the library is open 24/7.

Enskilda enkäter för Utbytesrapport/Exchange Report Orientation and reception 11. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: How you were welcomed as an exchange student. Orientation, information, activities. HKU assigns a local buddy to each exchange student that will be available to show you around the city and help you with any problems that you may have. The semester starts with a few gatherings and introduction sessions for exchangers, that make it easy to get in contact with people like yourself. The oce of international student exchange (OISE) at HKU is also available to support you. Accommodation 12. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satised? Do you have any tips for future students? Accommodation is an issue in Hong Kong, even more so than in Uppsala. The university owns accommodations through dierent residential halls (much like Nations in Uppsala) but there are not enough available places to accommodate all students. I was lucky enough to get a spot in non-hall housing arranged by the university, sharing a room with two other people about 10 minutes walk from the main campus. The room was small and had not been cleaned since the previous tenants had left. I was not satised with this arrangement and proceeded to move out two weeks later after having found a at through a property agent. Because of the lack of housing, the university awards a monthly stipend (1250 HKD) for those like me that arranged their housing outside of the university. University housing for undergraduates is very cheap (1000 HKD/month) while private housing is very very expensive (5000 hkd/month upward). The upside with the Hong Kong rental market is that it is very liquid, and that you will nd a at almost immediately. The university keeps a list of students that are looking for atmates. Your finances 13. Write one or more paragraphs describing the cost of living. Did you nd CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? If you live in university housing, CSN money will probably be sucient to cover your expenses. Food is cheap if you go to the right places, and campus canteens have pretty good and reasonably priced lunches and dinners. Internet access is free at the university, transportation is aordable, and cost of entertainment can be student friendly. But, since you will probably want to go traveling around Asia while you're there, you might have to nd some way to get extra spending money. I did not have any part time work in Hong Kong, and your student visa does not allow it. It is, however, fairly easy to get permission from the immigration authority if you get a job oer. I have exchange friends that worked as english teachers and university research assistants part time while studying. Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on oer? My free time was mostly spent exploring Hong Kong and traveling South East Asia

Enskilda enkäter för Utbytesrapport/Exchange Report and China. Students at the university are active in numerous clubs for dierent interests, although they will mostly use cantonese internally. Use of the university gyms is free and there are plenty of sports teams and courses that are open for anyone to join. Hong Kong is always happening in some way or other, and you will have tons of other exchange friends that are as eager to explore the city and surrounding as you. Your exchange on a whole 15. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. HKU is an ambitious university with a similarly ambitious student body. It provided me with invaluable insights into the massive transformation that China and Asia is undergoing. I have made many close friends during my time in Hong Kong and am inspired to return to there in the near future. Approval 16. Do you approve the publishing of your exchange report on Uppsala University's website? Yes When you are done press Submit. You will then be asked to conrm that you want to submit your answers. Press OK. Thank you for replying to this survey - your input is greatly appreciated.
