Examinations.

Endast i någon kurs fanns planerade diskussionsseminarier. Orientation and reception 13. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: How you were welcomed as an exchange student. Orientation, information, activities. Under första veckan äger Orientation Week rum. Accommodation 14. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Your finances 15. Write one or more paragraphs describing the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Access to computers. Examinations. Geology is a much bigger and mainstream subject in Canada then it is in Sweden. At the UofA the geology program is very good and is set up in a way to give their students a broad knowledge of geology both within hard rock and soft rock. Even tough many of the students will go into petroleum (Alberta oil sands etc) they are also forced to take courses within hard rock subjects, such as Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology. These courses are highly recommended to take and will give you a very good understanding of geology. In each of the courses there are regular lab sessions each week in which you will get a very good knowledge of both hand samples and thin section. For me personally I went there with the intent to study hard and I have never learnt so much in one year as I did over there. Course load wise I would advice taking 3-4 courses per semester as many are very heavy with labs each week. Tough this is highly dependent on which courses are taken. Teacher wise I have only had good experiences. They have been very friendly and good. Many of them feel a responsibility towards the students, who pay a lot of money to be there, and also towards the reputation of the University. UofA is very good university within Earth Science and many company s go there to recruit. Anyone who is going on an exchange to the UofA within Earth Science is welcome to contact me for help and advice about course details and so forth. Orientation and reception 13. for international students, who as an exchange student you are part of, the majority of these students come from Asia. This orientation is set at about a week before the Canadian freshmen start and have their orientation. Tours are offered on campus, trips to IKEA, cellphone providers are set up, different student groups are shown, Canadian laws, immigration and much more. It is very professionally set up, possibly due to the high amount of new international students each year. Accommodation 14. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I went to the UofA together with my girlfriend and therefore we wanted to have a place together. For single students going there are guaranteed places on campus if one applies before the deadlines. There are also larger apartments offered for student couples but as there was trouble with our applications last year, due to the mail being lost on the way? Me and my girlfriend had to set up our own accommodation. There is a really good website: http://www.rentingspaces.ca/ that offers off campus accommodation that private people offer. There are other sites as well, more like blocket, but i highly recommend the above mentioned one. I started by searching while we were still in Sweden and called around but it was really hard to get something good as most got taken by people who were already in place in Edmonton. So we booked a week at days inn in downton Edmonton and had to find something when we came to Edmonton. We had a couple of interesting objects and called, mailed and updated everyday when we came there for something good to come up. Off campus living is no problem at all as long as you live close to the LRT (train system that has a station on campus). For about 140 dollars each semester you pay for a U-Pass at the university which lets you use Edmontons busses/lrt for free, also inculded is activities on campus such as gym, swimming pool etc, it is a very good deal. Luckily for us we got a hold of a basement unit that was very nicely furnished for 725 CAD a month. Everything was included except an internet connection, which is easy to set up and Shaw.ca have good student offers. The price that we payed was very good and for such a residence one should be prepared to pay 1000CAD and up. People in Canada/Edmonton are very firendly and we had great a great landlords, who picked us up at the hotel with with luggage etc. We lived in Southgate, which is was very close to the Southgate mall, a big shopping complex and has a LRT station. For me in the morning it took about 5-10 minutes to walk to the train and then about 8 minutes to get to campus. Your finances 15. Write one or more paragraphs describing the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? As mentioned above our rent was very good and with CSN we had no trouble with living costs. Food is a little more expensive in Edmonton than Sweden, but not by much. Other things such as clothes, shoes etc is much cheaper. A good thing, which I did not do, is to look into getting a work permit. I heard about the possibility for Europeans to get a 6 or 3 months work visa at the end when we were leaving Canada. If you study something that is in high demand over there, in my case geology, then it could be a great opportunity for getting a summer job after you have finished you exchange. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Be prepared to study. It takes a lot of your time with their system of labs each weeks, midterms, papers, finals and so forth. Especially if you study science with lab work. Other than that there are great opportunists to go to the Canadian Rockies and visit Jasper and Banff. We first joined an outdoor club on campus but it was often full and you had to stand in ques for hours to get in on the trips. Therefore about 8 of us, all Scandinavian exchange students, at several occasions rented 2 cars and went on our own trips. Renting cars is really easy and you only need your Swedish driving licence. We rented tents and sleeping bags from a shop in Edmonton and some really good trips! There is awesome hiking in the mountains, an unforgettable experience! I recommend doing the Jasper and Banff trips early on in the first 2-3 weeks as soon school picks up and so does the cold. There are other occasion also which there is time for trips, the best being during Christmas break and after school is done in April. The semesters are short and intense. There are cheap charter vacations to Mexico and the Caribbean. Your exchange on a whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. All in all it was a great experience. Except the fantastic scenery of the Rockies, the good people of Edmonton, NHL hockey, ski trips and much more I have learnt a lot from the courses offered at the UofA as well. It will give you perspective on your studies and build character. Highly recommended! Approval 18. Your report will be available for future exchange students in printed form at the International Office and will be sent by email to individual students requesting it. First semester of your exchange Swedish autumn semester (HT) 7. Academic year 2012/2013 8. What did you study during your exchange? Mainly law, but also one french class 9. Level of studies at the exchange university Mixed undergrad/postgrad 10. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Law 11. What were the teachers like? What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations. Orientation and reception 13. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: How you were welcomed as an exchange student. Orientation, information, activities. Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Your exchange on a whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here.
