1 Abstrakt för SANT konferens, Göteborgs universitet, maj Spår 1: Kulturella perspektiv på tid BOHLIN, Anna Inst. för Globala Studier Göteborgs universitet Återställa till det som var eller bevara inför framtiden? Perspektiv på tid vid restaurering av svenska vattendrag Detta bidrag undersöker perspektiv på tid inom det svenska förvaltningssystemet genom att fokusera restaurering av svenska vattendrag. Vid sådan restaurering möts två förvaltningssektorers olika kunskaps- och värdegrunder och motstridiga perspektiv på tid, det förflutna och dess roll i nuet och framtiden aktualiseras. För att uppfylla miljökvalitetsmålen har den svenska regeringen beslutat att en tredjedel av landets skyddsvärda vattendrag ska restaureras. Detta innebär att spår av mänsklig aktivitet i och kring vattendragen ska avlägsnas för att på så sätt skydda och återställa biologiska värden. Den bärande tanken i sådan restaurering är att vattendragen ska återställas till ett tidigare, naturligare tillstånd. Dock kompliceras denna utgångspunkt av det faktum att vattendragen vid sidan om naturvärden även anses representera kulturhistoriska värden. Det man ur naturvårdssynpunkt vill avlägsna eller förändra för att återställa förment naturliga värden är det som man ur kulturmiljövårdande synpunkt vill bevara, som till exempel lämningar efter bosättningar, flottningsepoken eller kvarndammar. Inom båda perspektiven utgör uppfattningar om tid en viktig organisatorisk princip. Inom naturvården fungerar föreställningen om en viss, ofta ospecificerad förfluten tidsepok som en måttstock på naturlighet med vilken dagens miljöer mäts och jämförs. Inom kulturmiljövården utgör förgången tid huvudkriteriet för bedömningar av värden: det faktum att något ses som representativt för en viss tidsepok kan göra det värt att bevara. Vid vattenrestaurering ställs dessa båda perspektiv mot varandra och antaganden och värderingar som i vanliga fall tas för givet framträder på ett tydligt sätt. Bidraget bygger på dokumentanalys samt pilotintervjuer och ligger till grund för kommande fältarbete inom forskningsprojektet Att förlika miljöintressen: Natur- och kulturarv vid restaurering av vattendrag. EKSTRÖM, Karin Inst. för Globala Studier Göteborgs universitet karin.ekstrom@globalstudies.gu.se Generationen utan tid Under en omstudie av Britt-Marie Thuréns avhandlingsfält, Benituria i Valencia, Spanien, kom jag att erfara hur kvinnors tid, som då gick långsamt och måste fördrivas, nu inte finns , när Thurén gjorde sitt fältarbete, sågs hon och hennes studie som ett välkommet tidsfördriv samt en möjlighet att komma ut och prata om sådant som var viktigt men nedtystat , så välkomnades jag visserligen lika varmt och mitt arbete väckte intresse, men intervjuerna och gruppdiskussionerna blev ytterligare ett åtagande som skulle pressas in i kvinnornas redan överfyllda agendor.

2 Jag har i min avhandling valt att tala om (förnimmen) tidsbrist som en av de faktorer som gjorde det så svårt för mig att genomföra t ex gruppdiskussioner. Parentesen indikerar att jag är medveten om de materiella faktorer som orsakar en faktisk tidsbrist men samtidigt tolkar det som att tid konstrueras, uppfattas på ett annat sätt i dag än i början av 80-talet, genom en individualistisk diskurs (kopplad till en relativt ny neo-liberal ekonomisk ordning) som betonar det personliga valet, önskan. Jag tycker att det är svårt att i texten balansera dessa två sätt att se på tid, och önskar i min presentation diskutera detta. GREN, Nina Department of Anthropology University of Copenhagen nina.gren@anthro.ku.dk Mythico-history and the Issue of Time To many Palestinians, history seems to repeat itself. Difficulties and disasters are frequently explained and understood as a chain of interconnected events that fit into a pattern of oppression and deprivation. This process is captured by Malkki s (1995) analytical term mythico-history. As was the case among the Hutu refugees in Tanzania described by Malkki, among Palestinian refugees, *e+veryday events, processes, and relations in the camp were spontaneously and consistently interpreted and acted upon by evoking this collective past as a charter and a blueprint (ibid.: 53). In Malkii s terminology, mythic does not denote something false or made up, but refers to a moral and cosmological order or collective narrative that structures events and experiences and makes them understandable. The Palestinians mythico-history is designed to establish a moral order in which historical and current injustices are acknowledged and Palestinians are portrayed as victims of Israeli aggression. Most importantly, the repeated calamities evoke claims of injury and moral redress. The starting point of Palestinian suffering is al-nakba, literally the disaster, which marks the beginning of Palestinian exile and of Israeli state-building. The events of violence and flight in the late 1940s are thus an important theme in this particular mythico-history. Since al-nakba, certain events have repeatedly struck the Palestinians. Displacement and flight continue; for instance, TV images of the destroyed refugee camp in Jenin in 2003, where refugees were again living in tents provided by the UN, evoked memories of the refugee camps that were set up in the 1950s among my informants in the West Bank. Martyrdom is another such theme, introduced in the 1930s and still an issue, as is political imprisonment. Also outside the context of refugee camps in the comparably comfortable situation of Palestinians in Scandinavia challenges in life are sometimes understood as an ongoing nakba. When events in the present are understood as a repetition of previous events, time is not necessarily linear. This paper will discuss the implications of the Palestinian mythico-history when it comes to the understanding of time, of past, present and in particular future events.

3 HEDLUND, Anna Department of Social Anthropology Lunds universitet Att Aktivt Vänta: Tid och Verklighet i ett Hutu (FDLR) Militärläger i Östra Kongo Hur upplevs verkligheten, och på vilket sätt formar både tidens gång och stillestånd förväntningar, längtan, försvar och motstånd när man under tjugoett år levt som aktiv rebell (och flykting) högt upp bland bergen, djupt in i Östra Kongos regnskogar? Min presentation tar upp en liten del av min pågående forskning om rebellgrupper och våld i östra Kongo, mitt paper är baserat på en av mina fältupplevelser med FDLR (Hutu Rebeller anklagade för folkmordet i Rwanda 1993) som dels gömmer sig i de Kongolesiska skogarna men som också är aktivt involverade i den pågående konfliken. Efter fyra dagars vandring över berg och dalar, genom djungel och skogar tillsammans med FDLR militärer kom vi fram till lägret där de bor i bambuhus, det visar sig att samtidigt som militärerna själva säger att det inte finns någonting att göra i skogen så pågår det mångsidiga aktiviteter, religiösa ceremonier, danser, sånger och samtal som sammanfattningsvis är influerade av tidens gång, deras historiska bakgrund och som jag kommer diskutera också formar ideologier, världsbilder och potentiella framtida planer. Således, genom att diskutera mitt etnografiska material om hur FDLR lever sina liv bland bergen, vad de gör i skogen hela dagarna, vad som händer i militärlägren och hur de uppfattar sin verklighet kommer jag att knyta an mina intervjuer och observationer till begrepp som berör tid, nutid och framtid och hur det vardagliga och avskilda livet i bushen, som innebär både väntan (på internationella politiska beslut) och aktivt våldsutövande formar deras (kollektiva) sätt att tänka och uppfatta verkligheten. HENNING, Annette Centrum för solenergiforskning (SERC) Högskolan Dalarna ahe@du.se Solar Collectors in Roof Landscapes - Balancing Change and Preservation at a World Heritage Site This paper concerns varying views on the appropriateness of situating solar collectors on historic buildings. Solar thermal systems may reduce the consumption of purchased energy for the heating of buildings. However, solar collectors are also prominent artefacts, usually situated on the roof or outside facade of a building. Such characteristics can be perceived as particularly problematic when the appearance of the building is of major importance, as is the case with houses deemed worthy to preserve for coming generations. The research project presented here was carried out during the autumn of The basic purpose of the project is to contribute to increased knowledge of how the two Swedish national interests - preservation of historic buildings and promotion of energy efficiency - could both be met. Social anthropological theories and methods are used for the more specific aim of investigating varying ways of perceiving historic buildings used as homes and solar energy as a possible heating solution for such homes. Theories on material culture, landscape, space and place are particularly important for the discussion. Methodologically, the research involves a case study including interviews and observations in Visby, a Hanseatic town on the island of Gotland, the Baltic Sea. Eight qualitative interviews and three telephone interviews were carried out at this World Heritage Site. Among the twelve interviewees, seven men and women were dwellers living in historic houses. These interviews ended with a tour

4 around their homes, using photographing as a help for the dwellers to tell their stories. The other five interviewees were professional architects, antiquarians, energy advisers and employees at the local energy company. Photographing was also used as a method to observe buildings, 'street views' and 'roof landscapes'. Preliminary results indicate that it is not uncommon among those who live or work within the walls to look upon themselves and others as clearly divided into two kinds - 'preservers' and 'renewers'. Among some, the presumed views of their protagonists also evoke strong feelings. However, the variations between the interviewees turned out to be a lot more intricate and subtle than some would claim. Each of the interviewees shows an interest, in the history of their home and town as well as in ways of altering this built environment. Their varying ways of balancing change and preservation are linked to professional training, to the history and construction of each specific house, and to perceptions of aesthetics and a convenient home. Contrasting opinions on the suitability of solar collectors at specific sites clarify the vague or overlapping boundaries between private and public space, in terms of geography as well as in terms of ownership, responsibility and statutory power. The way the outside and the inside is perceived and handled is compared, as are differences between roof and wall, house and ground, and street facing facades as compared to other parts of the facade. The discussion connects to attempts to balance preservation with a buildings' educational and illustrative power as well as to its function as a dwelling. Följande fyra parallella dimensioner eller aspekter kommer att diskuteras: - Floden i landskapet (den heliga geografin) - Floden i kroppen - Floden som pågående skapelseprocess - Floden som medvetandeprocess Mytmodellens flod relateras sedan till analytiska tidsbegrepp som tempo, timing, temporalitet och tidsramar (time frames). Flödet från Ganges källa till Bengaliska symboliserar bland annat en Mahayuga ( år), som delas in fyra tidsepoker: Sattva-, Treta-, Dvapara- och Kaliyuga. Kali yuga, dvs vår samtid, sägs vara under år. Det motsvarar en tiondel av en Mahayuga. Av en Mahayuga utgör vidare Sattva yuga fyra tiondelar, Treta yuga tre tiondelar och Dvapara yuga två tiondelar. I en populär myt liknas kosmos vid en ko. I Sattva yuga står kon stadigt på marken med fyra ben. I Treta yuga står kon på tre ben, i Dvapara yuga håller den sig uppe på två ben och i kali yoga vinglar den desperat omkring på ett enda ben. Här uttrycks alltså tidsperiodernas olika kvalitéer i kvantitativa termer. Sattva yuga är den guldålder då moralen och religionen (dharma) är intakt. Under kali yoga är tiden helt ur led. Kanske är detta inte bara en deklinationsmodell, enligt vilken tiderna försämras? Modellen tycks också säga något mer allmänmänskligt om upplevd tid, som står i kontrast till individens tid och till vår moderna kategorisering av objektiv tid

Media technologies as tropes of transition in contemporary India Media and communication technologies of various kinds have during recent decades been powerful tropes of social change in India. Some scholars have described the growth of vernacular newspapers, the spread of cassette recordings or the development of communication technology generally, in terms of a revolution. The introduction of colour television in mid 1980 s and the popularity of certain TV series at the end of the same decade are often usually mentioned as prerequisite for recent political changes. Other media technologies that arguably could be considered as tropes of transition are the Public Call Offices (PCO) introduced in the mid 1980 s or the regional satellite television channels of the late 1990 s. But, the foremost technology that has evolved as the key symbol of a new India is without doubt the cell phone. Figures about how many new subscriptions that are added every month is almost compulsory in any narrative about contemporary India. In this presentation I will mainly discuss the cell phone as a trope of transition, but I will also relate the promises of this technology to another media phenomenon: the recent popularity of talent based reality shows on Television (such as Indian idolor Dance India Dance). Both converge on one strong idea that is permeating public culture in India today: the prospects for anybody to become somebody. In a massive advertisement campaign from the latest mobile operator on the Indian market, Unitel (Telenor), the tag line is: Ab mera number hai! Literally the expression translates Now, my number is! but in Hindi it also conveys the meaning My time is now! TOBISSON, Eva Nordiska Afrikainstitutet Uppsalas universitet eva.tobission@nai.uu.se Time-reckoning in relation to natural processes and livelihoods in coastal Zanzibar The paper draws on fieldwork material from a longitudinal study in rural coastal communities in eastern Unguja (i.e. the largest island in the Zanzibar archipelago). It explores the integral relationships between daily and seasonal natural processes and events, experienced-based knowledge and practice with regard to marine and coastal resources and local notions/concepts of time and time reckoning (also related to space). These relationships are central to my overall research focus, which is the coping strategies applied by women and men in coastal communities in Zanzibar, in response to external as well as internal processes of social, economic and environmental change. This includes the workings and effects of power relations and social and gender inequalities, and the impact of globalization (e.g. climate change and economic recession). The coast exhibits extraordinary environmental characteristics (e.g. biological diversity) because it constitutes the interface between the land and sea. This interface provides options for diversity of production regimes and livelihoods. The regularity and predictability of natural cycles such as tidal flows, winds and precipitation to a large extent determine the availability of, access to and use of marine and land-based resources for a wide variety of activities, such as fishing, collecting in shallow waters, mangrove cutting, aquaculture and agriculture. Individuals (women and men) and families in coastal Zanzibar combine the use and management of these resources in intricate and strategic ways, with a view to minimize risks and maximize the outcome of their livelihood choices, within the broader national and global economic, social, political and environmental context and realities.

6 The aim of this paper is to show how the notions of and vocabulary for time, sequencing and duration among coastal dwellers in Zanzibar are functionally related to the cyclical character and regularity of coastal natural/ecological processes and events on a daily, seasonal and yearly basis. The recognition of the (Persian) solar and (Arabic) lunar calendars gives time a rhythmic form. The solar calendar is referred to for changes in the monsoons (winds and precipitation) and related activities. The lunar calendar ( lunar months ) is a charter for Islamic feasts and rituals. It is also of primary significance for segmenting natural processes into successive intervals as a basis for the scheduling and organization of activities on a daily and monthly basis. The revolution of the moon determines tidal variations and hence the possibilities to engage in aquatic activities, either they require high tide or low tide. Tidal variations also indirectly guide the schedules and activities for land-based activities, such as agriculture. The ability to do the right thing at the right time in relation to natural processes and cycles is decisive for livelihood outcomes, and hence the importance of profound experienced-based knowledge and practice among the women and men whose livelihoods are dependent on natural resources. VIKTORIN, Mattias Stockholm Center for Organizational Research Stockholms universitet mattias.viktorin@score.su.se Market Appearances: Temporality, Methodology, and Knowledge in the Work of Market Research Consultancies Markets neither emerge nor function by virtue of an inherent logic, but require, in order to exist and persist, careful and continuous organization. In this paper I investigate the work of market research consultancies in order to explore key facets of the actual organizational work through which many contemporary markets appear. My discussion centers on three main themes. The first is temporality. I am interested in a particular mode of temporality characterized by an orientation toward the future and an increasing interest in emergence that seems to guide much of the work done by research consultancies today. Next, I ask questions about methodology i.e., how research consultancies seek to produce knowledge about markets, both in terms of the actual methods they use and the kinds of representations they produce. What it is more precisely in this context that counts as knowledge, is the final theme. I ask how, through certain forms of repackaging and instrumentalization, ideas, insights, and representations are turned into and appear as knowledge and sellable knowledge of and on contemporary markets. Ultimately, I hope this paper with its focus on temporality, methodology, and knowledge in the work of market research consultancies adds something also to a larger discussion of what defines the contemporary moment in capitalism. WULFF, Helena Socialantropologiska institutionen Stockholms universitet helena.wulff@socant.su.se IRLANDS GRÖNA FÄRG ÖVER TID: FRÅN FÖRBUD TILL MARKNADSFÖRING Med sitt gröna landskap har Irland länge identifierats som Den Gröna Ön eller Smaragdön.

7 Detta paper undersöker hur Irlands gröna färg är, och har varit, starkt laddad politiskt och kulturellt över tid, men på olika sätt. Under den brittiska kolonialismen rådde förbud att bära grönt ( the wearing of the green ), vilket ledde till att grönt blev ett än viktigare inslag i den irländska identiteten. Grönt var den republikanska revolutionära organisationens färg, och kom att bli den nationella färgen långt innan Irland blev en självständig nation år Nu är grönt fortfarande en indikator i utomståendes konstruktion av det irländska. På St Patrick s Day, nationaldagen, är det mycket vanligt att irländare bär gröna kläder alltifrån ett plagg som en kjol eller en slips till spektakulära utstyrslar för paraden. Det kan ses om ett kontinuerligt firande av den nationella självständigheten, som förstärks av minnet av förbudet, inte bara i Irland utan också i den irländska diasporan på olika håll i världen. Nuförtiden är grönt signaturfärg i marknadsföringen av Irland som turistdestination. Resereklam på Internet och i turistbroschyrer domineras av grönt, liksom souvenirer som representerar treklöver, keltiskt knytarbete och den lille Leprechaun, en trickster figur från irländsk mytologi. Irländsk turistdesign är genomgående grön, eftersom det är en färg som förknippas med Irland.
