1 Här följer instruktiner ch en mall för din vetenskapliga rapprt, Examensarbete 30 hp på läkarprgrammet (LÄA110) Innehållet i den vetenskapliga skriftliga rapprten ska mtsvara 20 veckrs heltidsarbete/studier. Rapprten skrivs i första hand på engelska inklusive ett engelskt abstrakt ch en ppulärvetenskaplig sammanfattning på svenska. Antalet sidr beräknas till ca berende på prjektarbetets karaktär ch bör inte vara längre än 50 sidr. Mallen är på engelska i det fall din handledare inte talar svenska ch behöver ta del av instruktinerna. Observera att det måste finnas både en svensk ch en engelsk titel på arbetet. Tänk särskilt på följande: Använd inte förkrtningar i titeln m de inte är allmänt vedertagna Att punkt ska användas sm decimaltecken på engelska (kmmatecken indikerar tusental på engelska) Att texter till figurer ch tabeller ska finnas så läsaren kan förstå en figur eller tabell utan att läsa hela rapprten Att texter till figurer ska placeras under figurerna ch även innehålla förklaringar av förkrtningar ch symbler Att texter till tabeller ska placeras vanför tabellerna medan förklaringar av förkrtningar ch symbler ska placeras nedanför tabellerna Att numrera tabeller ch figurer Att språket sm används i den ppulärvetenskapliga sammanfattningen är enkelt ch möjligt att förstå för en persn utan medicinsk utbildning Att du i diskussinen ska sätta dina resultat i relatin till vad sm tidigare publicerats d v s det måste finnas referenser även i diskussinen Lycka till!

2 Overall instructins The thesis shall be based n empirical data that are treated by the student under supervisin. The empirical material can be cllected by the student during the perid f the curse but may als be previusly cllected data. Analyses f the data material are made with the supprt f the supervisr and the research grup. Either quantitative r qualitative methds can be used. The thesis is typically structured as a scientific article, i.e. accrding t accepted nrms and rules fr articles published in internatinal scientific jurnals and shuld be written in English. The thesis will be evaluated accrding t the evaluatin criteria used fr the Master thesis at the Sahlgrenska Academy. The text will autmatically be examined fr plagiarism in URKUND (dcument). Layut The length f the thesis shuld be 4000 t 6000 wrds, which is equivalent t pages, and shuld nt exceed 50 pages*. Althugh the layut is that f a scientific article it is advisable t extend the intrductin and discussin sectins (see belw) and make sure that the full wrk f the student is presented, which f curse als includes negative results. Use duble spaced Times New Rman 12p and sufficient figures and tables t display yur data. Prvide page numbers and a table f cntents. Explain abbreviatins the first time they are used in the text. A decimal pint and nt a decimal cmma shall be used t separate the whle number frm the decimals when data is presented. All figures need legends and all tables need headings that explain the cntent f the figure r table in rder t allw the reader t understand them withut reading the whle reprt. Symbls and abbreviatins are t be explained either in the figure legend r belw the table. Assign numbers t the figures and tables, respectively, as this will allw yu t refer t yur figures and tables in the text (e.g. Fig.1, Table 1). *Excluding Cver page and Title page, Acknwledgements, Appendices and Ppulärvetenskaplig sammanfattning på svenska. The examinatin The examinatin bard and the examiners evaluate the thesis accrding t the same guidelines/nrms that are used in custmary examinatin f a manuscript/article fr scientific publicatin. The examinatin bard then advises the examiners as t whether the thesis can be apprved in its present frm r if a revisin is needed fr a final apprval. The student will be ntified f the result within 20 wrkdays after the submissin deadline. If a majr revisin is needed the supervisr will als be ntified. 6 Table f Cntents - (Innehållsförteckning) Abstract - (Abstract in English) The abstract gives a summary f the study, with the primary emphasis n results and cnclusins. The length (number f wrds) f the abstract is preferably between 100 and 300 wrds, 300 wrds is an abslute maximum. The abstract must be pssible t understand independently f the rest f the reprt, i.e. explain abbreviatins and prvide results sufficient fr the cnclusin yu present in the abstract. An abstract cmmnly includes the fllwing headings: Degree Prject, Prgramme in Medicine, Title, Authr, Year, Institutin, City, Cuntry, Intrductin/Backgrund, Aim(s)/Objective(s), Methds, Results, and Cnclusin(s)/Implicatin(s). 3-5 key wrds f the thesis shuld be identified in the abstract under a separate heading. The abstract must be in English and have an English title regardless f the language f the rest f the scientific reprt. Intrductin r Backgrund - (Intrduktin eller Bakgrund) This gives a backgrund t the wrk and presents the prblem area and relevant published research in the field. The intrductin can begin in a brad way but then narrws t give the aim/bjective, and the purpse f the study. Make sure that the reader learns enugh t appreciate the relevance f the wrk and why it is apprpriate t ask the questin that yu will address with yur study. An intrductin/backgrund in a master thesis needs t cver mre than an intrductin in an riginal research article as the authr is expected t demnstrate the knwledge he r she has acquired in the field during the scientific wrk. Aim r Specific bjectives r Research questin - (Målsättning eller Specifika mål eller Vetenskaplig frågeställning) Always state the hypthesis and/r bjectives in yur intrductin. The aim f the study is ften described briefly and cncisely. Specific bjectives may be given that break dwn the purpse and help t limit and fcus n the questins t be answered. Material and Methds - (Material ch metder) The chice f research methds is guided by the aims and specific bjectives. The methds chsen shuld be clearly described s that the reader is able t fllw the study design/analysis and take a psitin t the results. This sectin reprts methds, the design and apprach as well as the ppulatin/patient/materials that have been studied. This includes the methd used fr data cllectin, the variables that have been studied and the cnsideratins n which the chice f methd is based. If applicable, describe experimental animals and explain hw the materials/tissues were gathered, and hw the samples were prepared. The specific quantitative /qualitative methds, used in the analysis must als be clearly reprted. Data cllectin prcedures/variable analyses/statistical methds (Datainsamling/Analys av variabler/statistiska metder) Explain hw measurements were made and what calculatins were perfrmed upn the raw data. Yu must dcument all methds perfrmed in yur study, and yu need t summarize what yu did in yur wn wrds. Describe the statistical techniques used upn the data. In ppulatin-based studies separate sub-headings are cmmnly used t describe the abve e.g.: Ppulatin and data cllectin, Variables, Statistical methds Ethics - (Etik) Describe pssible ethical cnsideratins here. Read the infrmatin n research ethics given via Any frmal ethical permissin invlved in the study shuld als be dented.

7 Results - (Resultat) The study s results must be reprted in a stringent manner. This sectin describes nly the results f the student s wn study. Yu shuld aim t narrate yur findings withut trying t interpret r evaluate them, ther than t prvide a link t the discussin sectin. Use figures and tables t display the data when suitable. Be sure t als include negative results. All figures need legends and all tables need headings that explain the cntent f the figure r table in rder t allw the reader t understand them withut reading the reprt. Symbls and abbreviatins are t be explained either in the figure legend r belw the table. Assign numbers t the figures and tables, respectively, as this will allw yu t refer t yur figures and tables in the text (e.g. Fig.1, Table 1). Discussin - (Diskussin) The discussin sectin ften starts with a brief descriptin in the text f the study s primary/main findings. The results f the study are then discussed in relatin t ther research in the area, and references shuld be made t ther studies that have been published. Discuss/interpret nly the results yu have cvered in the results sectin, and start with the mst imprtant results. Make what cnclusins yu can, then suggest hw the experiment must be mdified in rder t prperly test the hypthesis (es) in future studies. Finally, where d yu g next? What questins remain? Did the study lead yu t any new questins? Try t think up a new hypthesis and briefly suggest new experiments t further address the main questin. Be creative, and dn't be afraid t speculate! The methdlgical aspects f the study must als be discussed and evaluated. Mst studies will require a critique f the study material, analysis methds and/r experimental design. Determine if yu asked the right questin in the first place. Decide if the experimental design adequately addressed the hypthesis, and whether r nt it was prperly cntrlled. This is preferably dne after the discussin f the study s results and cmmnly a subtitle is used fr this part such as Methdlgical cnsideratins r Strengths and Weaknesses. Cnclusins and Implicatins - (Knklusin/Slutsatser ch Betydelse) Describe the cnclusins that can be drawn frm the study results, the way in which this knwledge can be meaningful fr peple s health, thus pssible clinical/medical relevance and what effect it may have fr future research. If applicable, describe als mre cncretely what can be dne t imprve the situatin f the patient grup investigated. Actins n the structural (plicy) level t the individual level can be suggested. Ppulärvetenskaplig sammanfattning - (på svenska) När man skriver den ppulärvetenskapliga sammanfattningen är det viktigaste att skriva enkelt ch begripligt. Sammanfattningen skrivs på svenska ch skall ha en svensk titel avsett vilket språk du skriver din rapprt på. Den sm inte alls är insatt i ämnet ska kunna förstå vad ditt arbete handlar m. Förklara vad du kmmit fram till ch, m det går, vad frskningen kan användas till rd. Låt gärna någn sm inte är medicinare/naturvetare läsa igenm ch kmmentera.
