Person 54 Basic Information 1. Name annica löing 2. Exchange university ecole polytechnique federale lausanne 3. City lausanne 4. Country schweiz 5. First semester of your exchange Swedish autumn semester (HT) 6. Academic year 2011/12 7. Level of studies at the exchange university Undergraduate 8. What are you studying at Uppsala University? biology/biochemistry 9. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 3 Studies 10. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: The dierences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? The relationship between teachers and students. Examinations. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Biggest dierence are examination and credits/course. Small courses, with 2-4 ECTS each leads to many exams if you want to get 30 ECTS/semester. This is a lot of work!!! and requires a completely dierent study method from the one I am used to back home when you only deal with one course at a time. Most exams are ORAL. I never had an oral exam before. The level diers a lot, generally I nd the level lower, maybe due to the smaller courses but on the other hand, the work load much bigger. Professors are generally very busy and the hierarchy among students/teachers are more determined. But you can still book meetings with professors and there are always some assistants as well. Study environment in incredible, everything is perfectly suited for the students and to create a good study environment. Restaurants, café, library, opening hours, extended opening hours for library and cafés during exam periods. More work places as well.. computers (Macbooks) and chargers can be borrowed for free in the library. Printers available. Helpdesk for computer issues. Sta in the library/info desk daily until late. Smells good on toilets. Chairs and tables outside with lake view. and other places for resting. Bookshop in the same building (Rolex). Unfortunately this incredible building is also a home for tourists, so from time to time a lot of people walking around and taking pictures and also some annoying events going on. But still, library is always extremely quiet. I never worked this much or this good during my studies. Orientation and reception 11. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: How you were welcomed as an exchange student. Orientation, information, activities. Very well! Lot of information via , activities (through Exchange lausanne), buddy, welcome/information dinner etc. (via EPFL)
Accommodation 12. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satised? Do you have any tips for future students? Finding accommodation is horrible. I nally ended up renting a room in a private at, sharing with a swiss student at EPFL. It took me 3 weeks to nd place, spent so much money on hostel! The FMEL (student houses) are useless. Expensive and very small and not very nice. Their so called queue system doesnt exist. The best you can do is to rent private I would say, visit as many places as possible. Try to live close to EPFL (university), you spend more time around here than in town (lausanne city is quite boring) and trains/metro/bus goes to Renens (close to EPFL) all the time. I live in between and would have preferred to be closer to EPFL. Also the sport center is next to the university, as well as the lake. The housing oce are the best place to get help, the very nice ladies there do everything the can to make sure you have a place to stay at. Your finances 13. Write one or more paragraphs describing the cost of living. Did you nd CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? My rent here was about 2000 SEK higher. So quite expensive. Cost of living is higher than in sweden, food (specially meat) and activities. Buy train cards immediately (demi tarif and voie 7) so you can aord traveling around in this small beautiful country during your stay. Also, try to come along on the organized trips since they are very aordable. The things I spent money on except food was skiing and trains, visiting. You wont aord eating on a restaurant, except at university where the prices are pretty good if you pay with you studentcard. CSN was enough, but could have been more cause I will be on zero when coming back home. And the worst with the CSN money is that people going to france for an exchange receive more than we who goes to switzerland do, which do not make sense since it is way more expensive here. If you get a job in you spare time (there are a few things oered yes, specially if you speak french well) you will earn a lot but loose study time, which I dont nd worth it. Also you want to have time to see things while here so in your free time you dont want to work. Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on oer? Skiing!!!! and hiking and visiting cities, thermal bath, if you are interested in museums there are plenty of them in Lausanne only. And all cities has so much things going on, carnivals, festivals and whatever you can think of. But you better be more interested in nature than cities, cause it is expensive to visit a city, buying a coee in zurich for example is a fortune, and the nature here is absolutely tremendous. There is so much things to see. And you will never get bored of this incredible scenery. The oers from the exchange comittee are very variable and really fun! Parties, cheese, chocolate, glaciers, skiing, snow shoes, dinners etc etc etc. You wont get bored for sure! Your exchange on a whole 15. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. This school is amazing,
they have a lot of money and you can really tell. Take advantage of being at EPFL, it is a good school. Make contacts with professors, they are well known. Go to symposium and similar organized stu. Dont work too much, you are in a new country! Take advantage of the weekly pubnights and other activities to get friends for life. As said before, live closer to EPFL and buy those train cards asap. Theres a good student price on computers via EPFL. Get used to the fact that everybody buy food in school, it is not made for lunch box (barely any microwaves for example). Approval 16. Do you approve the publishing of your exchange report on Uppsala University's website? Yes When you are done press Submit. You will then be asked to conrm that you want to submit your answers. Press OK. Thank you for replying to this survey - your input is greatly appreciated.
Person 209 Basic Information 1. Name Helena Söderberg 2. Exchange university UNIL 3. City Lausanne 4. Country Switzerland 5. First semester of your exchange Swedish spring semester (VT) 6. Academic year 2011/12 7. Level of studies at the exchange university Mixed undergrad/postgrad 8. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Law, psychology 9. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 4,5 Studies 10. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: The dierences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? The relationship between teachers and students. Examinations. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. The main dierence was the format of the classes. In UU almost all law classes are held in seminar- format, with only a few introductury lectures, at UNIL basically all classes were lectures given by the professor. It made it easier since it is not obligatory to prepare for a lecture in opposition to a seminar. Another main dierence was that the reading material in the law classes at UNIL only consisted of small readers (polycopiés) and it was not neccesary to buy any books. In Uppsala we spend a lot of time in the library preparing tasks with the aid of the codes and books. The relationship between the teachers and the students at UNIL varied depending on the teacher, but in general you did not get to know the teachers very well because the lecture groups were fairly large and most teachers gave lectures without involving the students with questions/comments or discussions. To have discussions in most cases presuppose that the students have had the opportunity to prepare the material beforehand. The examinations in law were oral, which was not very well suited for me when it comes to an exam in English. However, in the examinations in french it could be helpful because the teachers could help out with questions or comments to aid you when you struggled with the language. The material covered in the exams were smaller then at UU, and in that sense they were easier. However, in opposition to at UU 30 credits consists of around 5 or 6 courses and the same amount of examinations. The academic level of the courses I think was lower than at Uppsala (which makes sense since there were only lectures to attend, which very not obligatory, and no seminars to complete and no essays to write.) There were, as already mentioned, less material to cover too. However, at the same time it was very important to stay alert at the lectures, because most teachers wrote exam questions dealing with the material covered at the lecture and there was not an opportunity to access the information elsewhere (such as in a book). The quality, however, was quite good because the teachers were experts in their respective subjects. The human rights teacher had worked in the monitoring commitee for the covenant of social, economic
and cultural rights and the american law teacher was originally from america. They had many personal experiences to share. The access to computers I am unsure about, since I always had my own laptop with me. There is a wireless network that you can use to hook up your laptop or your smartphone. It is also possible to download a printing tool on the laptop in order to print material without having to have access to an external computer. There was computers in the halls, though, if you just want to look something up real quick and I did hear that there was a computer room on the bottom oor of the internef building (were my faculty was) and maybe also in other faculty buildings as well. Orientation and reception 11. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: How you were welcomed as an exchange student. Orientation, information, activities. There were not many activities, but maybe that was because I arrived in the spring. There was a lunch followed by an information session in the aula for all exchangestudents. After the information session all the dierent faculties had stands were you could go to pose questions and access more information. The Erasmus students network also had a stand were you could sign up to become a member and they had their rst clubnight of the semester the same evening. They also gave some information about their upcoming activities. If you want to study french as a foreign language at UNIL it is to be recommended to go and see the people at the EFLE-stand. They have a sheet with all the dierent courses to choose from as well as a timetable (horaire) for the dierent courses so it's possible to see what will t into the schedule. Accommodation 12. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satised? Do you have any tips for future students? I lived in a exshare apartment, that was through the students housing network (FMEL). From the university I got information about how to sign up on the incription list, but the housing agency was independent and there were no housing guarantees. The most important is to sign up as soon as possible. The house, Bourdonette, were quite close to UNIL (within walking distance) and it had most things you needed such as a storage room for bikes, somewhere to leave the trash and a washing machine and a dryer at the bottom oor. Cleaning equipment could be accessed from the janitors oce. In the apartment we were ve people. The shared kitchen was quite small, but the living room was quite large with a table and chairs where you could eat. The furniture was maybe not the most newly bought, but it was okay. There were two bathrooms, one for girls and one for boys. The rooms were large, but not with much furniture. It was okay for a semester though. There was wireless internet in the apartment, but it worked so-so. The best is to bring a cable. The concierge was the more disturbing part of the housing experience. He needed to be satised that everything was working smoothly, especially the cleaning, so he had aparment checks every once in a while. The upside was that it was clean, the downside that he was quite scary. The best thing is to do what he says. :-) There were also an opportunity to rent a house with a family. Many of my friends did, and it was nicer than FMEL. It was not as many exchangestudents close by, however, so it really
depends on what you want to get out from the exchange. If you want to stay at FMEL it is important to sign up as soon as possible. Your finances 13. Write one or more paragraphs describing the cost of living. Did you nd CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Switzerland is quite expensive. Most things are a little bit more expensive than in Sweden, but some things, such as meat, are a lot more expensive. You get a somewhat higher loan from CSN. However, I was afraid that is was not enough so I applied for a general scholarship from UU that I was lucky enough to get. I would not have felt confortable with my nacial situation without it. If you want to travel or eat out you need some more savings or a scholarship, CSN is not enough. A meal (without drinks) in Lausanne costs around 23 francs (170 kronor) and drinks around 5 francs (35 kronor). The trains work well, but are also quite expensive. (20 francs one-way to Geneva, 40 minutes away). It is good to get the demi-tari, which works all over switzerland if you want to travel within Switzerland by train. The rent was 580 francs (around 4200 kronor) each month. The rent of an equivalent room in Uppsala would have been around 3000 kronor. However, my rent was among the lowest, and considered quite low in Lausanne. I did not work during my studies, but I'm aware of that some people did, and it is possible for EU-students. There is time to do so, but it might mean that you cannot travel in Switzerland all the weekends and focus on the french. If you already have a good level of french it is easier to nd a job. Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on oer? In the beginning of my exchange I spent most of my weekends skiing. There are mountains around 1 hour away from Lausanne by train (Leysin and les Diablerets being the closest) and it is really nice resorts as well. Only one more hour away one can access the amazing Alps of Valais, such as Verbier. The University had some activies, such as a luge ride with cheese fondue and a good-bye cruise at the end of the year. Most activies were organized by the Erasmus students network, however. They had a three year skitrip, in Nendaz, which I hear was amazing, although I could not go since I had hurt my foot. They had other, smaller activities, most weekends, such as visits to Bern or Geneva, waterskiing, and snowshoeing. Every other tuesday there was a café culturel where a student could present their country to the rest of the exhangestudents. Every wednesday there was a clubnight. The sportscenter had many sports on oer, and most at very cheap or reasonable prices. The lake geneva was right by campus, which meant that we could have barbecues in the summer evenings and go swimming or do summer sports such as canoeing and sailing. I was very happy with what was oered, although I would have prefered some more activities right in the beginning of the semester, when I did not know anybody, with other people that had just arrived in order to make some more friends.
Your exchange on a whole 15. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. In general I really liked to live in Lausanne. The city is just beautiful, like a little alp-village, with streets going up the mountainside up towards the city-hall and the cathedral at the top of the mountain. The people are really friendly and you feel welcome whereever you go. It is also a good place to study french, since the rumour says that the swiss actually speak slower than most other francophones! One thing that I didn't think of before I went on my exchange is that Switzerland is a mainly german speaking country. I was involved with the European law students association in the beginning of the semester and went on a convention with them that was almost entirely held in german! There were also A LOT of german spekers, germans and swiss-allmands, among the exchange students, that you tend to be with because the swiss-romande already have their entire social network in Lausanne. Therefore I really felt handicapped not knowing a word of german in Lausanne. It might not be like that for all students, but the law faculty also have a german branch which might have made it extra popular for german speakers. Apart from that, I am super-satised with my exchange and especially with Switzerland. I know a lot more french now, than I did when I rst arrived! Approval 16. Do you approve the publishing of your exchange report on Uppsala University's website? Yes When you are done press Submit. You will then be asked to conrm that you want to submit your answers. 8 Person 113 Basic Information 1. Name Karin Lonaeus 2. Exchange university Université de Lausanne (HEC) 3. City Lausanne 4. Country Schweiz 5. First semester of your exchange Swedish spring semester (VT) 6. Academic year 2011/12 7. Level of studies at the exchange university Undergraduate 8. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Ekonomi kandidatprogram 9. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 3 terminer Studies 10. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: The dierences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? The relationship between teachers and students. Examinations. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. I andra året nner du mycket mattekurser.
Orientation and reception 11. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: How you were welcomed as an exchange student. Orientation, information, activities. Accommodation 12. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satised? Do you have any tips for future students?
Your finances 13. Write one or more paragraphs describing the cost of living. Did you nd CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on oer?
Your exchange on a whole 15. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. Approval 16. 12 Person 51 Basic Information 1. Name Lina Lundgren 2. Exchange university Université de Lausanne 3. City Lausanne 4. Country Schweiz 5. First semester of your exchange Swedish autumn semester (HT) 6. Academic year 2011/12 7. Level of studies at the exchange university Mixed undergrad/postgrad 8. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Juridik 9. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 5 Studies 10. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: The differences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? The relationship between teachers and students. Examinations. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Studierna
Orientation and reception 11. Write one or more paragraphs describing the following: How you were welcomed as an exchange student. Orientation, information, activities. Accommodation 12. Write one or more paragraphs describing your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Your finances 13. Write one or more paragraphs describing the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies?
Free time 14. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Your exchange on a whole 15. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. Approval 16. Do you approve the publishing of your exchange report on Uppsala University s website? Yes
