1 COURSE SYLLABUS Individual artistic work Year 1 Scope of the course 55.5 ECTS credits. Entry requirements -year programme in Fine Arts. Level Basic level (first-cycle). Course contents The course will introduce the students to the main subject, Fine Arts, by providing them with opportunities to familiarise themselves with various artistic techniques, materials and forms. Students will receive supervision which will support them to develop their ideas and concepts as well as a probing, experimental approach to the design of their working methods. In the course, field of contemporary art. This will take the form of artist presentations, lectures and study visits and contextualise themselves. It will also be discussed in professor-led groups, group critiques and studio talks. There will also be seminars, lectures, artist presentations, as well as segments designed to prepare students for a professional career and elective courses led by teaching staff or guest teachers. Forms of examination To conclude whether a student has achieved the learning objectives an assessment will be made in professor-led group meetings and by e with the supervising professor. The course also includes a segment in which students will gain basic knowledge of how to begin to pursue a professional career as an artist. 11 KURSPLAN Individuellt konstnärligt arbete årskurs 3 Kursens omfattning 45 högskolepoäng. Förkunskapskrav Minst 110 högskolepoäng på Kungl. Konsthögskolans 5-åriga program i fri konst. Nivå Kursen är på grundnivå. Kursens innehåll Kursen fördjupar studenternas färdigheter inom deras respektive konstnärliga område och utvecklar deras förmåga att använda självständiga och relevanta arbetsmetoder samt göra bedömningar med hänsyn till relevanta konstnärliga, samhälleliga och etiska aspekter. Genom diskussioner och egna presentationer i professorsgrupper, gruppkritiker och ateljésamtal samt i momentet Artist writing övas studenterna i att muntligen och skriftligen presentera sin konstnärliga praktik på ett självständigt sätt. I professorsgrupper och seminarier samt under en studieresa utomlands, organiserad kring resmålet och/eller ett specifikt tema, utvecklas studenternas förmåga att reflektera över konstens roll i samhället ur både ett nationellt och internationellt perspektiv. Kursen innehåller ett yrkesförberedande moment där studenterna får en orientering i konstvärldens kulturpolitiska förutsättningar och en översikt över de olika aktörer, organisationer, myndigheter och nämnder som en yrkesverksam konstnär kan tänkas komma i kontakt med. 12 Kursupplägg och kursens delkurser/moment Kursen är upplagd på två delkurser under ett läsår: Årskurs 3, A 30 hp Årskurs 3 B, 15 hp (höstterminen) (vårterminen) Kursen bedrivs i form av individuellt arbete och handledning i ateljéer och verkstäder samt i ateljésamtal, samtal i professorsgrupper, gruppkritiker och en studieresa. Kursen bedrivs också i form av seminarier, föreläsningar, konstnärspresentationer samt yrkesförberedande moment och valbara kurser som hålls av undervisande lärare eller gästlärare. Former för bedömning av studenternas studieprestationer Att studenten uppnått lärandemålen examineras vid professorsgruppsmöten samt genom bedömning av studentens arbete vid individuella handledningssamtal. Den första delkursen examineras genom ett avstämningssamtal med handledande professor för att försäkra sig om att studenten visat på en progression i förhållande till lärandemålen. För godkänt betyg krävs aktivt deltagande i professorsgruppsmöten (minst 4 per termin) och individuella handledningssamtal (minst 2 per termin) samt att lärandemålen har uppnåtts. 13 COURSE SYLLABUS Degree Project in Fine Arts at Bachelor level The scope of the course 15 ECTS credits Entrance qualifications Admission on the Royal Institute of Art's 5-year Programme in Fine Arts and 120 credits in Fine Arts at basic level Level The course is on a basic level (first-cycle course) The content of the course The student is to create an Independent Artistic Work to be presented at a public group show the Bachelor Degree Show at the end of Year 3. By going through the different stages of the exhibition process, the student will gain an insight into both the individual and collective work involved in producing an exhibition and working in visual form. Intended learning outcomes After completion of the course, the student is expected to: - demonstrate a practical ability to realise his or her artistic ideas - provide an oral presentation and discuss and reflect in a critical way on the artistic expression he or she has chosen - provide an oral presentation on the work process behind his or her Independent Artistic Work in connection with the presentation on the completed work - demonstrate the ability to be able to place his or her artistic expression in a wider context Course structure and course modules/elements Within a given time frame the student is to create an Independent Artistic Work. Ongoing supervision is provided during the course of the work, in both studio and workshop. Under the guidance of the professor in charge of the exhibition and the teacher in charge of the year, the students are to work together as a group in planning, designing and presenting their Independent Artistic Work in a public group show. 14 The means used to assess the students' learning outcomes The students' learning outcomes will be assessed in the form of their presenting their Independent Work in a group show, which will be followed by a critique seminar in which the students take an active part in a conversation with the professor in charge of the exhibition, the teacher in charge of the year and two external artists/critics/curators. In order to pass, the student must have carried out and presented his or her Degree project in a way which shows commitment and conviction. This will be done in discussions and self-presentations in professor-led groups, group critiques and studio talks, and in individual work and supervision in the studio and workshops. Students will be provided with an understanding of the nature of artistic development work and artistic research, how to pursue them, and account for their positions in the field of art. Among other things, this will take the form of participating in a seminar in conjunction with the Royal Institute students to plan, present and formulate a project application. 18 KURSPLAN/COURSE SYLLABUS Master seminar in Art Theory Scope of the course 4,5 ECTS-credits Entry requirements 5-year programme in fine art at the Royal Institute of Art -credits at the Level Advanced level The content of the course The course will introduce students to a range of critical theories from the modern and mainly contemporary periods. It will introduce perspectives on artistic practice from the social sciences and philosophy, as well as theoretical approaches from neighbouring disciplines such as film, performative arts, and architecture. The course will discuss topics that are relevant to contemporary art production and refle specificity of visual images, the course will pay particular attention to the ways critical theory has been adopted, explored and applied by artists as well as art historians, critics and curators. Expected learning outcomes After completing the course the students should be able to: - understand contemporary art as interacting in a wider field of cultural, social, and political practices and realities - approach theoretical concepts at an advanced level - discuss theoretical concepts in relation to their own and other artists work Page 18 of 24

19 - explore critical thinking through an analysis of the conditions, mechanisms, institutions and collaborations that constitute the field of art, including a critical self-reflection of the role of the artist in society. The structure and possible subsections of the course The course comprises lectures, seminars, discussions, occasional excursions and primary and secondary source readings, and the emphasis will be on class discussion of the readings. In addition, artists working with the subject matter of the seminar will be invited to hold workshops for the students. In collaboration with art institutions in Stockholm, symposia, filmscreenings and other events related to the topic of the seminar will be organized. The course will also comprise two individual tutorials (studio visits) per semester. The forms of examination The teacher responsible for the course evaluates if the student meets the required learning outcomes To pass the course active participation in the seminars is required and at least 80% attendance. Students who fail the course have the right to a renewed examination, which is done in the form of a written examination. In the preparation of the group exhibition, students will acquire knowledge in how to collaborate on and plan a joint exhibition. 22 COURSE SYLLABUS Independent project (degree project) at the Master programme in fine arts, 30 ECTScredits The scope of the course 30 ECTS-credits (master essay 10 credits, solo show 20 credits) Level The course is on an advanced level. The content of the course The course consists of an independent project/degree project, which is presented in a public solo show, together with a master essay, that constitutes a reflection about practice. In the creative process of writing the master essay students are encouraged to seek out references that are important for their artistic practice, and to also position their work in relationship to other artistic perspectives. The students can also use a range of research methodologies, and the writing process itself, as a generative tool to develop their ongoing studio work. Through this critical and contextual engagement the master essay is in a productive way integrated into the work process for the artistic independent project. Intended learning outcomes After the completion of the course the student is expected to be able to: - demonstrate the ability to execute artistic ideas to artistic works of high quality - demonstrate the ability to formulate and articulate a context and references to his or her own artistic practice and to put in relation to other artistic approaches - demonstrate the ability to formulate new issues autonomously and creatively and contribute to the formation of knowledge - demonstrate the ability to execute artistic ideas - present, discuss and critically reflect upon his or her artistic practice and artistic issues, both orally and in writing - account for choices, strategies and methods in connection with the presentation of the completed work Page 22 of 24

23 Course structure and course modules Within a given time frame the student shall independently plan, formulate and present the independent project/degree project. The course is divided into two modules an artistic work and a master essay, that are examined together. For both the artistic work and the master essay ongoing individual supervision is given. assessed by the accounting of the master essay and the presentation of the artistic degree project in a critical discussion in connection with the solo show. For the independent project to be approved the student needs to have performed and presented the two parts in a way that fulfill the intended learning outcomes. For master essays, which have not been submitted before the deadline during the fall semester, a new possibility for an examination is only given during the following fall semesters.
