12 Summary SALARIED EMPLOYEES IN MINING AND QUAR RYING, MANUFACTURING, POWER PLANTS (PRI VATE-OWNED), CONSTRUCTION, STEVEDORING AND REPAIR SERVICES NOT ELSEWHERE CLASS IFIED The preceding survey, which reffered to 1979, has been published in Statistical Reports Am 1980:23 and in Wages 1979, part 1, Official Statistics of Sweden (SOS). Data referring to 1980 have been published in Statistical Reports Am 1981:29. RESULTS OF THE SURVEY The result of 1980 years survey shows that the average monthly salary for adult, full-time employees in mining, quarrying and manufacturing was 8 443 Swedish kronor for men and 6 028 kronor for women. In construction the corresponding figures were 8 145 kronor for men and 5 655 kronor for women. The number of employees (including junveniles and part-time) in mining, quarrying and manufacturing has been calculated to 248 700 of which 175 700 men and 73 000 women. In construction there were 35 500 employess of which 26 700 men and 8 800 women. The contents of the tables 1-11 will be found in "List of tables" at page 6. ORGANIZATION AND CARRYING OUT OF THE SURVEY The data on employment refer to August 1, 1980. The negotiated monthly salaries refer to August 1980. The survey population consists of salaried employees (including supervisors) within the branches of industry to which the survey refer. The survey frame has been a register comprising industrial enterprises included in the central register of enterprises (CFRS) and registers of the members of the Swedish Employers' Association (SAF), the Newspaper Employers' Association (TA), the Co-operative Movements' Negotiation Organization (KFO), the Negotiating Organization of National Swedish Enterprises (SFO) and the Swedish Co-operative and Public Utility Housing Enterprises (KAB). The National Central Bureau of Statistics (SCB) and the organizations have used different classifications of occupational groups when collecting data. When working with the data obtained from the organizations, SCB has re-coded the notations of occupational groups used by the organizations so as to be comparable with the notations of occupational groups used by SCB. The grouping of educations is based on the Swedish Standard Classification of Educations (SUN), which has been worked out by SCB. The branches in the tables are defined according to the Swedish Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (SNI), which is based on the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC 1968). The data collected by the organizations have been examined and coded and then transferred to SCB in the form of a magnetic tape. Data have been collected for each salaried employee and accounted for by place of work. The data collected by SCB have been examined and coded in an analogous way. The two materials have then been combined and form the basic material of the statistics. Out of the salaried employees who have been accounted for in the statistics, 90 per cent work in enterprises affiliated with the organizations. The non-response rate, which is highest for small enterprises, is estimated to be about 5 per cent of the total of salaried employees. The estimates of the survey have been adjusted with respect to the non-response.
13 QUALITY Since the sampled part of the survey is small, the sampling error is small. There is a certain lag in the updating of the frames of the survey. It is therefore possible that the estimated number of salaried employees is somewhat too low. However, this is considered to have no effect on the estimates of the monthly salaries. COMPARABILITY The change in the classification of occupational groups in the survey of 1980 only implied a finer classification and therefore does not affect the comparability. SALARIED EMPLOYEES AND CLERICAL STAFF IN WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRÄDE Official statistics concerning the wages and salaries of employees in wholesale and retail trade have been compiled annually for the private wholesale and retail trade since 1948, for the consumer co-operative trade since 1949, for the State Monopoly Liquor Company since 1956 and for pharmacy personnel since 1953. Since 1963 the relevant surveys have been conducted by the National Central Bureau of Statistics (SCB). The surveys are carried out in cooperation with the Swedish Employers' Confederation (SAF) and the Co-operative Movement's Negotiation Organization (KFO) which collect data relating to those employed in trade in enterprises associated with these organizations; the SCB obtains data directly from a sample of employers not belonging to these organizations. An entirely new sample of respondents was drawn for the 1970 survey and a revision of the statistics took place at the same time; Since 1970, the figures for shop and warehouse (store) personnel as well as for drivers are recorded by hourly wages, the coverage of the statistics also includes certain data on employment and the recording period for the material collected by the SCB and the two organizations is the same. The coverage of the survey has been restricted to the establishments which have been classed as belonging to the wholesale and retail trade in the Swedish Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities. However establishments dealing in fuel and motor fuel have been excluded as they are surveyed separately. Since 1973 the survey also includes employees in pharmacies. The survey covers the following four categories of employees: (1) salesmen and shop-assistants, (2) warehousemen (storemen) and drivers, (3) office staff, etc, (4) pharmacy personnel. Since 1980 the publishing of the results have been changed so that categories (1) and (2) are published in Wages 1980 part 2, and category (4) is published in a separate section. The agreed regular monthly salary on 1st August 1980 had to be recorded for each employee, as well as the average value per month of payments in kind, commissions, bonuses, supplements for inconvenient hours of work, etc. In addition, particulars had to be given regarding age, sex, education, nature of the work done and the length of the regular weekly hours of work. The survey did not include managers, certain executives, owners, partowners, trainees, apprentices and the partially disabled. It should be observed that the occupational classification has been modified in 1980 which means that the results of 1980 are not directly comparable with those of 1979 concerning occupation. It should also be observed that the number of employees show an increase of about 30 000 persons between 1979 and 1980. This increase is explained by a better cover of employees working at enterprises associated with organizations. The employees have been recorded with distribution by age, sex, occupation, certain metropolitan areas and by eight major regions. There has also been distributions by the size of the establishment and the length of the regular weekly hours of work. The survey covers 78 513 men and 44 941 women. PHARMACY PERSONNEL Official statistics of salaries for certain categories of pharmacy personnel
14 have been published since 1953. Since 1963 the surveys have been performed by the National Central Bureau of Statistics. In 1973 a revision of the statistics took place. The changes introduced include the presentation of monthly salaries for all employees at pharmacies as well as at the Head Office at the National Corporation of Swedish Pharmacies (excluding the Board of Managers). The survey covers 911 men and 11 645 women. SALARIED EMPLOYEES AND CLERICAL STAFF IN HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS Official statistics of wages and salaries for hotel and restaurant employees have been published since 1954 (cf. SOS, Wages 1966, Part 1, pp 19-29). Since 1963 the surveys have been performed by the National Central Bureau of Statistics (SCB). The surveys are carried out in cooperation with the Swedish Employers' Confederation (SAF) and the Co-operative Movement's Negotiation Organization (KFO), which collect data for employees in the concerned activities from enterprises affiliated with the respective organization. The SCB collects data directly from a sample of establishments belonging to enterprises which are not affiliated with either of these organizations. An entirely new sample has been drawn for the 1980 survey in agreement with the 1972 revision of the statistics. The survey is limited to establishments classified as hotels, restaurants, cafes, rooming houses, camps or other lodging places (division 63) according to the Swedish Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (SNI). The survey covers the following four occupational categories: (A) permanently employed hotel, kitchen and scullery personnel (B) waiters, waitresses, (C) temporarily employed hotel, kitchen and scullery personnel, (D) permanently employed salaried employees in restaurants and clerical staff. Since 1980 the publishing of the results have been changed so that categories (A), (B) and (C) are published in Wages 1980 part 2. For category D the presented figures refer to the agreed monthly salary of 1980-08-01 with a specification of current supplements. An estimated number of 1 409 men and 1 735 women are found in category D. Data are presented distributed by age, sex, occupation and some major urban areas. Owners, partners, persons in management positions or employees with nonspecified occupation have not been included in the processings, nor apprentices, trainees, temporary employees or physically handicapped persons in category D. For a list of occupations, see p. 20. For the major urban areas, see p.24. The processings cover 1 409 men and 1 735 women in category D. To these numbers should be added some further 200 persons which have not been included in the processings because of their special occupations. EMPLOYEES IN CARGO SHIPS AND IN PASSENGER FERRIES Data on wages of employees in cargo ships have been published since 1968 (except the years of 1969, 1971 and 1975) and in passenger ferries since 1976. The survey has been carried out in co-operation with the Swedish Shipowner's Association and the Swedish Employer's Confederation. The data of 1980 are relating to employees employed during the whole of July on vessels who were not laid up for repairs, classification, reconstruction etc. Table J shows average earnings of some occupational groups in 1968-1980. The tables 31, 32, 34, 35 and 37 show the monthly average earnings in 1980 with breakdown by certain supplements, occupations and ages. For a list of occupation, see p. 20. EMPLOYEES IN BANKS Since 1948 annual statistics have been published on salaries of employees in commercial banks and savings banks affiliated with the Employers' Association of the (Swedish) Banking Institutes (Bankinstituten's Arbetsgivareorganisation). Since 1976 the survey also includes co-operative banks. The statistics refer to full-time and part-time
15 employees. Only some few persons in managerial positions are excluded. The employees have been recorded with distribution by age, sex, occupational categories, stipulated weekly duration of work and region (tables 38-42). The data received for the 1980 survey referred to stipulated monthly salaries in January. EMPLOYEES IN INSURANCE COMPANIES Since 1948 statistics have been published on the salaries of employees in insurance companies (and in some organizations active in the field of insurance). The survey in 1980 is based on reports concerning the salaries of employees in insurance companies (and in some organization active in the field of insurance) affiliated with the Employers' Association of the Swedish Insurance Companies (Försäkringsbolagens Förhandlingsorganisation, FF0) and of employees in the Folksam Insurance Group which was not affiliated with the FFO.
