Level of studies at the exchange university Mixed undergrad/postgrad 10. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Civilingenjör - system i teknik och samhälle 11. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 3,5 years Studies 12. Tell us about your studies on your exchange. If you are stuck for ideas you can for exemple write about: The differences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... Jag läste: Italian Language and Culture 1, år 1, 8 cp ≈ 10 hp, Road and Transport Engineering, år 4, 6 cp ≈ 7,5 hp, Introduction to the Built Environment, år 1, 6 cp ≈ 7,5 hp.
Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? Man hade varsitt rum men delade resten, dvs toa, dusch, kök, vardagsrum, balkong osv. Mixat, dvs både tjejer och killar. Fick städning varje vecka i lgh utom rummen. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Dyrare i Australien. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. Approval 18. Your report will be available for future exchange students in printed form at the International Office and will be sent by email to individual students requesting it. What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... I can only speak for the engineering faculty and it was quite different from in Uppsala. More focus on mandatory assignments during the semesters which resultet in a heavy workload. Good for learning but not so good for social life. Uppsala is more focused on the final exams, and the exams are important at UTS as well. But the difference is that whereas your exam score will be your subject score in Uppsala, the exams only account for one part of your final grade (usually 50%) at UTS. So even if you score 100% on the final exam, you will just pass the subject, therefore doing well in the assignments is critical. Teacher - student relationship is similar to Uppsala. The general quality of the courses was good and students are generally better prepared prior to lectures etc. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. Nothing to complain about. Everything was well sorted.
Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I had three different accomodations: January - June: Student housing on campus in a shared apartment. Pros: Convenient (close to uni and close to the CBD), easy and safe to arrange prior to departure from Sweden, serious staff (janitors, security etc). Cons: Boring apartments, usually very young and immature flatmates, anal security (can t bring friends over without talking to security first etc), you only meet other students June - January: Two different private apartments in Manly and Freshwater. Pros: Everything - close to the beach, cheaper, apartments that doesn t look like the hallway of a hostpital, you get friends from all different backgrounds Cons: Not as close to uni (but you can get a private apartment in the CBD as well), not something you arrange prior to departure because of scams etc. Check gumtree.com.au for shared flats. Post a looking for accomodation ad and you will get replies from people who want to share their apartment or rent out a room. By far the best option. Rent IS expensive in Sydney, get used to it. Everyone wants to live there so it s just a matter of accepting it. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? Rent for accomodation: I payed A$250-300 /week, all bills included. Thats roughly 6000-7200 SEK /month, so cost of housing is about twice as much as in Uppsala, depending on your standars. You could get away with less than A$200 per week if you lower your Swedish standars significantly. Shopping for food at supermarkets: About the same, some things are cheaper and some are more expensive. Beef is generally a lot cheaper compared to Sweden. A$5/kg for minced beef as an example. Nightlife: Buying a beer at a pub is cheaper compared to in Sweden, between A$5 and 8 for a pint of a standard lager beer. So pretty much the same as the nations in Uppsala. But you could spend huge amaounts of money when you go out if you want to, Sydney is a city with many options depending on what you re after. CSN: You can have a decent life with just CSN. You will recieve roughly 14.000 SEK a month from them and that is enough. BUT, when you re overseas on an exchange you are going to want to spend a bit more compared to your avarage semester in Uppsala. The weather, people and the general vibe will trick you into thinking that you re on vacation and your wallet will tranform into vacation-mode. So I would recommend to bring some extra fun-money to make your stay more enjoyable. Cooking spagetti bolognese 7 days a week and bring lunch boxes everyday is not something that you re going to want to spend your time on. It s also recommended to do some trips on uni-holidays etc. I had a part-time job during my second semester which allowed me to travel around Indonesia for a month during the winter holidays (July-August). Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? There are lots of different clubs that arrange activities all the time but I did not attend any of them so I can t really say much about them. I spent my first semester mostly with other exchange students from Uppsala. We explored the city, had dinners and went out partying, went to the beach, went to sport events such as rugby and aussie rules football, did a few weekend trips around Sydney and a lot more. My second semester was more chill since I knew the city better. As I lived close to the beach I spent lots of time there surfing, swimming, tanning, running and generally enjoyed what I think is best about Sydney and Australia. Sydney is such a speacial city that has so much to offer. The laidback beach-life combined with the big-city vibe with lots of bars, restaurants and clubs (it takes some time to find the best ones though, don t fall for the most obvious options). Different neighborhoods are good for different things, here are a few: Pubs, bars and restaurants: Surry Hills, Bondi, Manly, The Rocks (a few in CBD as well). Beachlife: Manly, Bondi, Coogee, Palm Beach Clubs: CBD Strolling around: Glebe, Newtown, The Rocks, Sorry Hills Good daytrips: Hunter Valley Wine District, Blue Mountains, Palm Beach.
