3 Editorial Welcome to Finland! I hope you all have enjoyed your first week in Finland! And if you participated in the Erasmus Intensive Language Course, I hope you have enjoyed the first month of your stay. This, the Student Union at Åbo Akademi University s information bulletin, is especially dedicated for you and therefore the most of the information is in English. Normally you find the English column in the end of. in English contains useful information on and off campus and I highly recommend you to read the column every week! And why not practice your Swedish skills reading some other information once holding the bulletin in your hands? After one week I guess you all have gotten the key to your apartment, maybe already opened a bank account, visited the Welcome Pub at Kåren and ESN Orientation Party and hopefully you know your way home and to the campus by now. If you don t have all kitchen equipments and clothes you need yet, take the opportunity and visit the free flea market at Kåren 7.9! And if you have excessive belongings, you can bring them as well and maybe someone else is in need of them. I haven t studied abroad myself yet, but I m planning to study abroad next If you have any problems, don t hesitate to ask your tutors or asking us at the Student Union. autumn, meaning that I haven t any own experiences to share with you about coming to a new country knowing that I will live there for the next months. Anyway, I want you all to get a wonderful exchange period! You came here to study, but that is not the most important part. The most important is to get new experiences, to get new fiends both from Finland and all over the world and to learn about the Finnish culture. If you have any problems, don t hesitate to ask your tutors or asking us at the Student Union. You find us in our Student Union houses: Kåren in Åbo and Havtornen in Vasa. Feel free to come and visit us, and you are also very welcome to the events organized by the Student Union. You find information about the events in or at our home page. 4 The new Examination instruction came into force this year. Do YOU know your rights and obligations? For example: - As a rule, students are offered three possibilities within an academic year or a calendar year to participate in an examination. - The department council can decide on the arrangements for examinations in more detail, especially those concerning the student s right to participate in an examination. - If the test questions are not available on the examination day, despite the participant being correctly registered, or if electronic examinations cannot be carried through due to technical problems, a new possibility to take the examination must be organized within a week. - Students should be able to prove their right to participate in examinations with verification of their registration at the University for the term in question. Students must also be able to prove their identity, upon request. - Candidates are permitted the use of dictionaries during examinations, except in the case of language examinations and unless otherwise stated by the teacher. - Students should be provided with the opportunity to view their answer papers and be given the criteria used to grade the paper. The examiner marking the paper should explain, upon request, the basis on which the examination paper was assessed. - Examination results must be issued, as soon as possible, and no later than two weeks after the examination. The results of electronic examinations should be issued no later than three weeks after the examination. - If a written work has not been handed in before the deadline, the examiner has no obligation to grade it. 5 Jobba på Club Kåren Dryga ut din knapra studiekassa med extrakäck på Club Kåren. Restaurangen söker serveringspersonal till olika tillställningar, främst matservering. Erfarenhet av restaurangarbete krävs. Hygienpass behövs och avklarad tent i alkohollagstiftning är en fördel. Ta kontakt med Anne, mail: anne.peltonen@abo.fi eller telefon PSYKOTERAPI I GRUPP hösten 2010 Gruppterapi passar bra som behandling för de flesta psykiska problem, t.ex. sociala rädslor och spänningstillstånd, nedstämdhet, relationsproblem, panikångest och utmattning. I gruppterapi ökar man sin självkännedom, sin förståelse för andras sätt att fungera, och sin förmåga att uttrycka sig i grupp. Gruppen möts en gång i veckan och består av 5-6 personer. Medlemmarna har tystnadsplikt. Det finns ett par lediga platser för hösten Kostnaden är 35 euro per gång. Man kan få stöd från FPA för att täcka kostnaderna. Stadga is the student union for law students at Åbo Akademi University. This week we welcomed a bunch of new students and are just as eager to receive exchange students amidst our events. This wednesday we ll participate in the traditional baptizing of freshmen students. On thursday it s time to try on student overalls and to present our board to the freshmen. Next week freshmen will be introduced to the art of participating in a sitz i.e. a three-

7 course dinner that includes lots of singing! Interested in participating in any of these events? Contact us on Solveig It s about time......for the new academic year to begin! Vocalis, THE student association for Speech and Language Pathology, would like to take the opportunity to warmly welcome all of our new students, as well as old ones. As another year at university is starting, so is practice for Axelbandet, the student orchestra at Åbo Akademi. As we are getting tired of constantly seeing the same faces around, we are looking for new members to come join our merry gang. So if you enjoy big band music, Axelbandet is the place to go! Our repertoire comprises numerous musical styles, including jazz, swing and funk. We are currently looking mostly for trombonists, drummers, base players and singers, but welcome anyone interested in being part of our big band. Cultural associations(åbo) Hello and welcome! Studentteatern i Åbo (STÅ) would like to welcome all new students to Åbo Akademi University. We are a student theatre that is active within the Student Union of Åbo Akademi University. The group s activities include producing plays, courses in drama and related arts, as well as excursions to other theatres. As this is a very flexible group, there is room for mostly any kind of expertise, not just acting. No previous experience is required. Pictura is a photo club whose members share a common love of photography. No experience necessary, all are welcome. The fist Thursday every month we hold meetings. Normally this includes someone holding a short lecture or similar and coffee afterwards. Each month we also hold a small competition based on a theme. Our first photo evening will be held 9 of September at 6 pm in ASA room A120. The theme for the evening will be Horizon. The club also has an exhibition going, starting in Arken this week, ÅB09. In September we are going on an excursion to Denmark, Copenhagen for a weekend, there might be some spots left. So if you like photographing don t be shy come pay us a visit! Pictura

11 Ledare bullen på svenska Hej! och Hej igen! Ett stycke Hej! till dig som är ny och aldrig hört om eller sett mig förut och ett stycke Hej igen! till dig som känner igen mig från tidigare. Mitt namn är Simon Kaustell och jag är fullmäktigeordförande för Åbo Akademis Studentkår. Att vara fullmäktigeordförande innebär att jag fritt får bestämma vart din inbetalade kåravgift går. Största delen brukar jag genast sätta rakt i egen ficka (därför var det mitt kontonummer som uppgavs på inbetalningsblanketten och inte Kårens), men en del ger jag tillbaka åt dig i form av bland annat hälsovård och juridisk rådgivning. Detta för att upprätthålla min goda image som välgörare. Förutom att jag är chef över Kårens ekonomi så bestämmer jag också vad Kåren skall jobba för och till mitt jobb hör även att censurera styrelsens utlåtanden. Kort och gott kan man säga att jag är Kåren personifierad. Om du inte tror på mig, så får du gärna läsa Kårens stadgar eller fråga någon i kårkansliet, antingen i Havtornen i Vasa eller i Kåren Åbo, hur saken är och rätta mig om jag har fel. Igår ringde en bekant som jobbar på radion till mitt jobb och bad om en intervju med någon från personalen. Hon berättade om en forskning som visar att stämningen på arbetsplatser där det finns konstföremål är bättre än på arbetsplatser där det inte finns konst och ville ha några kommentarer av exempelvis mig. Om forskningens resultat stämmer så borde vi ha världens (åtminstone Österbottens) bästa stämning på min arbetsplats. Vi har ju faktiskt haft flera olika konstutställningar under min tid på Österbottens Museum. Jag behövde faktiskt inte fundera längre än så förrän jag kunde konstatera att forskningsresultatet i alla fall för vår del stämmer in. Jag har aldrig förr haft ett (sommar)jobb där stämningen mellan arbetskamraterna har varit bättre. Trots att jag inte tycker om att stiga upp tidigt varje morgon, har det känts skönt, till och med roligt, att fara till jobbet varje dag för att igen få träffa mina arbetskamrater. Tänk om den sköna stämningen vi haft under sommaren berott på att vi mer eller mindre är omringade av konst? Finns det då inte tillräckligt med konst för alla arbetsplatser? Om några dagar kommer min huvudsakliga arbetsplats att vara Åbo Akademi i Vasas utrymmen i Academill och jag skulle gärna se att alla studerande och all personal där, och i olika utrymmen i Åbo, skulle ha lika skön stämning som jag nu har här på Österbottens museum.
