3 Dear Student, You will be given many opportunities to investigate and work with scientific questions and information. You will be given many tools, including this handbook, in which to build a strong understanding of the world we live in, and how and why things work. This Mathematic and Science dictionary is an important tool and should be brought to all of your math and science lessons and used while working at home. Never be afraid to ask questions. The world s greatest minds have through all times made a life of questioning virtually everything. Walk in their footsteps. Mathematics & Science Department 1
4 The Scientific Method The scientific method is used to support a theory or idea. This is the method, which all research projects should be based. The Scientific Method is used by researchers to prove or disprove a theory. There are five steps to the scientific method Observation Question You observe something in the material world using your senses or machines. You ask a question about what you observe. Form Hypothesis You predict what you think the answer to your question might be. Follow a Procedure You do the experiment using the method you came up with and record the results. Usually, experiments are repeated multiple times to be sure that the results are accurate. Determine a conclusion You state whether your prediction was confirmed or not, explain what has happened and possibly create a new hypothesis. How to Write a Laboratory Report The main parts of a laboratory report include Title Hypothesis Materials Procedure Results and Data Collected Conclusion 2
5 Example Lab Title: Water on a Coin Hypothesis: If I slowly drop water onto a coin with the face side up, then it will hold more drops than if the coin were face side down. (Notice that the hypothesis has the words IF and THEN to explain what it is you are going to do and what you think will happen.) Materials: Water, pipette, coin Procedure Slowly drop water, one drop at a time onto a coin with the face side up. Record your results. Repeat the procedure with the face side down. Collect results from the other groups. Results Group Face up Face down Total Conclusion Based upon the results collected by the class, my hypothesis was incorrect. Some groups had more drops with face side up and other with face side down. When the total for all the groups was calculated the two results were almost the same. I can conclude that it does not matter which side of the coin is facing up to hold the most water. However, some groups did a much better job of holding more drops so perhaps we could look at the technique of how to have the coin hold the most water for a future experiment. 3
6 Basic Science Lab Rules Safety First! Wear protective gear and tie back hair when directed by teacher. Do not run or play in the lab. Work quietly. Keep your work area organized. Chemicals should be handled under adult supervision only. Wash hands properly. Clean up and dispose of things properly. Lab Safety Rules Failure to follow the rules will result in removal from the lab and possibly exclusion from future labs. General Precautions Follow all directions and listen to your teacher at all times. Read and follow directions carefully before beginning the experiment. Ask for help before and during the experiment if you do not understand. Never perform experiments without supervision. No eating or drinking in the lab. Do not run or play in the lab. Dress Code Wear protective cover lab apron or coat when dealing with chemicals and Bunsen burners. Wear protective eye glasses when working with chemicals, Bunsen burners and glassware. Tie back long hair to keep away from flames and chemicals. Remove jewellery or tie back clothing that might get in the way of flames or chemicals. 4
7 Heat & fire safety Never reach over across a flame. Check the Bunsen burner gas on & off. Never leave unattended. Do not play with fire. Watch out for splashing/boiling chemicals and water. Use the correct tools. Chemical Safety Do not taste anything. Be careful when smelling things. Dispose of chemicals according to your teachers directions. Glassware Safety Never eat or drink from glassware in the lab. Always clean glassware thoroughly before putting it away. Be careful with sharp instruments. Do not touch broken glassware. Tell the teacher to help clean it up. First aid Report accidents straight away to your teacher. Stay calm and try not to get in the way of the adult who is helping. End of Experiment Rules Clean up your area, return equipment to the correct place, dispose of waste. Wash your hands properly and take all your belongings. 5
8 LAB PROCEDURES Walk in quietly and stand at your place and greet your teacher. Take out your notebooks, pencils, easers etc and put your folders on the shelves. quietly wash your hands properly in turn. Tie your hair back, remove any hanging things and store them away. Put on your lab coats if your teacher says you need them. quietly sit on your seats for further instruction. Follow your teachers instructions. Do not touch anything until you are told to. Do your experiment carefully and quietly. Check with your teacher when you are done. Clean up your area properly and sit quietly and write your report. Allow the teacher time to help others. Show respect and wait your turn. Wash your hands and clean up the room before leaving. Collect all your things and wait for your teacher. Greet you teacher. 6

Oxidising Provides oxygen which allows other materials to burn more fiercely. Liquid oxygen Keep away from flammable materials. 7
10 Units of Measurement Table 1 shows the standard units that we use in science. Sometimes rulers or balances have two sets of measurements on them: The SI units and the ones we used to use in Britain, like inches, or pounds and ounces. In science, you should always use SI units. 14 Revision Skills What did you eat for breakfast on Wednesday two weeks ago? Very few people will be able to answer this question. Things that are not important to remember get stored in your brain s short-term memory. To remember things for a test, you need to store information in your long-term memory. When revising Divide your revision into small chunks of between 20 and 40 minutes. Take a break, 5-10 minutes, between every chunk. How to revise This step gets things into your short-term memory. Write down key words and short notes, while you are revising. We can read pages and pages of information without taking it in. Our minds are very good at day-deaming However, do not rewrite all your notes. That is a waste of time. This step gets things into your long-term memory. If possible, spend 5 or 10 minutes in the evening, going through the key words and short notes you have made that day. The more you look at these brief notes, reviewing, the more likely the information is to stick in your long-term memory. Make sure you do this step, otherwise you will lose the information you have worked hard to get into your short-term memory. This step makes sure that things stay in your long-term memory for years to come. Use learning skills. You could try repeating things you need to learn, over and over again. You could try making up silly words of phrases, mnemonics, to help you remember. You could try drawing diagrams, mind maps, to help you remember. 15 Web Searches The Internet is a very useful source of information, but make sure that you ask yourself these questions before you start. Where can I find the information I m looking for? One of the best ways is by using a search engine. Choose the one that works best for you. Keep it s address among favourites. Describe the information you want carefully. Use at least three key words that describe what you are looking for. I.e. if you want to find out about Mars athmosphere, try the words; Mars, planet, atmosphere. Make sure that the engine finds what you are looking for. Does the engine really understand what I am looking for? Make sure you tell the search engine that you only want pages that contain all the words. Can I use the information that I get? Be careful about what you choose to read. A page written by NASA will be very reliable, but surely too complicated. Try NASA for Kids. Remember that the Internet is open to anyone. Information is often incorrect. Be aware! How can I use the information? Never use information that don t understand. Never copy the text from the Internet. Read understand and write it down in your own words. Copying someone else s work could get you into trouble and not only with your teacher. Surf sensibly and safely. Never give the school s adress or password to anybody on the Internet without checking with your teacher! 13

20 Historians estimate that by 2000 B.C. humans had noticed that the ratio of circumference to diameter was the same for all circles. This discovery hinged on the idea of proportion - in this case humans noticed that if you double the distance "across" a circle, then you double the distance "around" it. In today's algebraic notation this implied the formula where Pi was constant. (It wasn't until 1706 that this notation, using the Greek letter seen in the above equation - often written Pi and pronounced like the English 'pie' - was introduced by William Jones). Mr. Jones accepted the value of Pi as 3, In 1737 William Euler adopted the symbol and it has now become the standard for Pi. The significance of this discovery is clear: Circles are everywhere - in the sun, the moon, the pupils of our eyes, the most basic religious rituals and the earliest man-made structures. Achieving a greater mathematical understanding of Pi would lead to scientific and technological advances that would further the development of civilization, as well as creating some very interesting problems in pure mathematics. But one problem remained - what is the numerical value of Pi? At IESK we accept the value of Pi as 3,14 although the true numerical value of Pi is still unknown and is considered to be infinite.
