4 0. Executive Summery The Swedish museum Architecture has developed a web portal ECMADE and where an exhibition developed together with Kalmar Museum and the Kulturen in Lund has been included. The exhibition mainly target ung people studying at the grammar school level and the gymnasium. The first version the web portal was launched in spring The Swedish museum Architecture has assigned More Business Media AB to make an evaluation the web portal and se what connections there are between this material regarding the users prile and points view and the usability and usefulness. The aim the study is to get further material for developing the web portal and the structure and content the design. The target group for this investigation was press and general public (the Friends the Museum organisation). The study was conducted with a questionnaire. The questionnaires were published during 27/04/ /05/2004. During this period the target groups were encouraged to respond to the questionnaire by getting a link which was sent out with e- mail. The target groups were press and general public (the Friends the Museum organisation). Totally 300 addresses were supplied by the Swedish museum Architecture who also contacted the who also contacted Friends the Museum and asked them to respond on the questionnaire. The reason for doing this was that it was difficult to get access to addresses security reasons. The questionnaire to contained 17 questions (incl. a request to leave to be able take part in a lottery on cinema tickets). This type study with a target group with knowledge and an interest for the subject generally has very high response rate. Normally this type study has 5-15% respons rate, whiles a targeted investigation has higher respons rate (up to 50%). What is the issue is if the respondents have interest/belonging and if he/she will influence with his contribution. A reminder was sent out to the addresses within a week. Further one aspect which influences the respondents rate is that it took some time to respond on the questionnaire as all respondents had to go into the portal first and then surf round on the web portal before they could reply on the questionnaire. Totally 63 general public/press responded. This means that the group had a response rate on 21% which can be considered as very good as it takes some work for all respondents to be able to answer the questionnaire. 4

Conclusions The ECMADE consortium has been successful in making a web site for the target group where design, pedagogical content is interesting. Also regarding user friendliness, information, graphic and entertainment the website is quite highly rated. There is a large interest for design and the website among respondents. A large number respondents have replied on the open questions which indicate a large interest for the investigation. 11

12 The number respondents is not large enough to draw general conclusions but the selection is large enough to be representative for press/general public. Respondents are used users Internet. 95% were interested in design. 58% thinks the website will inspire to visit physical visits to museums. The aim the web site is appreciated. But as many have given negative on the ECMADE portal it should be improved. 12

15 Three weeks at the Instituto Cabrera Pinto in La Laguna, Teneriff. 1 Background The project work contained a test the exhibition SMILE (Schools Museums Internet Learning Europe) which is an exhibition at the virtual museum for architecture and design, ECMADE. The virtual museum for architecture and design is an EU financed project which the Swedish Museum Architecture is developing together with Centro Internacional Para La Concervacion Del Patrimonio (CICOP), on the Teneriff in Spanien. Other partners are The Lighthouse, UK, Fratelli Alinari S.p.A., Italy, The Museum Finnish Architecture, Finland and Paregos Mediadesign AB, Sweden. The assignment I got was to test ECMADE portal and the exhibition SMILE on children in Sweden and Spain. The Swedish Museum Architecture helped me to find a school on the Teneriff and to prepare for the reception. My tas k was to: Translate a questionnaire to Spanish Test ECMADE and the exhibition SMILE on children years. To make my assignment suit the objective which my institution at Stockholm University has it was decided that I shou ld make a report on how Spanish children work on the Internet and how I as a teacher can use the ped agogical exhibitions in my teaching besides the work I did for the Swedish Museum Architecture. 2 Method The method I used in the project work was: To translate the questionnaire to Spanish To produce a written presentation the tests for schools and for children Prepare the teachers in school Present the tasks for the children at school Survey the tests and see to that 85% as a minimum replies on the questionnaires and that they were sent to the Arkitekturmuseet. Write a report on how to carry out this type tasks on Spanish children. In the report I analyse the computer maturity among Spanish children. The method I used when I was at the school was a qualitative method called Observation Participants i.e. I study h ow the children acts on certain theamatic issus. These were Computer Maturity i.e. the Spanish children s ability to start the computer, use ordinary programs like the Office and use the Internet Analyse how I as a teacher can use the pedagogical exhibition SMILE on ECMADE and the portal ECMADE The School where the work was carried out Instituto Cabrera Pinto in La Laguna on Teneriff is an integrated Grammar school and Gymnasium. This means that the children are between ages My instructor at the school was Ms. Teresa Juan who teaches biology. I had a chance to experience the Spanish hospitality and stay at her house. I was very well received at the Instituto Cabrera Pinto. The other teachers and the headmaster were very helpful and I got a lot time with the pupils so I could manage my tasks. 15

16 Work with ECMADE and SMILE: I arrived at La Laguna on Saturday the 29 November The first days at the school were Monday 1 Decem ber. My schedule was following: During week 1 I followed the instructor on her lessons to get to know the school and the environment During week 2 I started testing the pupils. I took 10 pupils at time to the computer room and they could put on the computer and log in to the Internet. After having a glance at the ECMADE portal they could go into the exhibition SMILE. Totally I had to test 60 pupils aging 13, 14 etc. with 10 from each age group up to 18 years age. The selection pupils was done by the teachers in respective class. As my task was a qualitative analysis it should not influence the conclusions that I could not test all students in each class. We expect that the tests were carried out on the most computer interested children. Week 3 I carried out testing. I also had time to meet the Spanish partner CICOP. 48 out 60 questionnaires were answered. The reason for the drop-out-rate was virus in the computers at the time the tests. 3 Result from Instituto Cabrera Pinto, La Laguna 3.1 Computer Maturity The students between were very mature. They had had two computer lessons per week where they learned General computer science Office (Excel, Word and Power Point) The Internet to search information on the Internet and to use I had expected that young students should need help to log in to ECMADE and SMILE but all pupils managed at once. The pupils English was very weak. Therefore they did not manage to study the exhibition SMILE which was only available in English. The students between were even more used to computers. They have computer lessons twice a week when they learned General Computer Science, Office (Excel, Word, and Power Point) but also more advanced searches information on the Internet. Their English skill was not so good either but they managed to log in and look at the SMILE exhibition. My conclusion is that the Spanish pupils are just as mature with Computers as similar age groups in Sweden but their training in English is generally not so good. 3.2 To use ECMADE in education The ECMADE portal is translated into Spanish. All pupils managed to log in and then answer the questionnaires. All pupils had difficulties to test SMILE as SMILE was not translated to Spanish. All pupils had limited knowledge English compared to similar age groups in Sweden. SMILE contains a large number tasks which the pupils can carry out. During the tests ECMADE/SMILE there was not time enough to do all the tasks but most students said that they were interested in carrying out the project work at a later time. The teachers were interested in using SMILE in the teaching. After being with the students when they worked on SMILE I felt that I can use SMILE in my future work as a teacher in Spanish. One the tasks which the pupils shall describe is the house where they live, where the parent s work, what they work with, what their grandparents do etc. and what they can look at on the road to school. When they carry out these tasks they get a chance to use different words, bow verbs etc. The tasks are pedagogical and well performed. 16

17 4. Conclusions 4.1 Work in Spain For me it was very interesting to come to a Spanish school and se how they work. The climate at the school is quite different from Sweden and the teachers work less as a team and more individually compared with how they work in Sweden. Their pedagogical methods are also different from the methods used in Sweden. 4.2 The results I have delivered 48 on the questionnaire on ECMADE to the consortium (2 were no data in). They will include the questionnaires in the electronic database and analyse the results. 17

Designen på sidan samt informationen och bilderna. + grymmt snygg sida + Det är bra med info om design till unga men jag tycker att sidan kunde vara bättre. Tycker den var svår att navigera i och att det var för mycket intron och "snygg" grafik. Det blir lite för ytligt. +- Det bästa var under visa med Konstfack& Beckmans och Fantasi samt Inspiration - jättebra. Utställningar var av varienrande kvalitet Bostad i tiden var bra liksom Eyes wide open. + Bra skrivet om designprocessen.bra glimtar av designstudenter. + Dess existens. + Bra bilder och lättfattlig text. + bra med designhistoria och årtal + Informationen i sig verkade bra, men grafiken och navigationen var väldigt förvirrande och irrelevant. Krångla inte till det! (+)- Enkelt att hitta, fina bilder, intressant och roligt. + Roligt att ni samlat svensk design på detta sätt. Bra som en bas-guide till svensk design. Skulle dock önska att det fanns ännu mer bilder. + En bra idé att mot yngre människor förklara vad det innebär med formgivning. Dock håller den fortfarande för låg nivå. (+)- den fungerade inte jag kom inte vidare! - Lärarhandledningen + Inte tramsigt, tar besökarna på allvar. + Lagom mycket, relevant information. Även läströtta elever orkar ta det till sig. Bra bilder, såklart! + Logiskt uppbyggd, lätt att hitta, snygg grafik, intressanta rubriker (ja, innehållet också förstås!) + Att den var bra utformad + fina bilder. lagom med info. bra att man kan få reda på mer om man är intresserad. + Mycket snygg och spännande grafik. Inbjöd verkligen till fortsatt tittande. Jag brukar tröttna ganska fort på surfande men inte här. Grattis till en god sida! + Många exempelbilder och texterna var anpassade för en yngre publik. Intressant att man även tagit med planlösningar i översikten av boendet. + Möjlighet för unga att se och förstå vad design egentligen är och en mötesplats för utbyte av informatoin unga emellan. + Jag tyckte att textinformationen var bra och lagom mycket + Rolig grafik. Det är alltid roligt när man upptäcker en websidas oväntade möjligheter efter hand, att man överraskas, jag tänker tex. på att bildtexterna innehåller extra och bra information, när man klickar på ett visst ställe. + Väldigt mkt känsla av dataspel och det kanske är bra om man ska nå denna målgrupp...+- Kul och intressant, man kan vara anonym om man vill + Fina bilder + Att den lockade till att fortsätta titta. + Jag tyckte grafiken och designen på dennna hemsida var otroligt snygg, det har ni verkligen lyckats bra med! Sen tycker jag att det verkligen finns mycket information att hämta och mycket att lära sig av. Det känns som om det äntligen finns en plats för alla om design och att man kan få lära sig allting i lung och ro! Den utmanar att vidga var och ens syn på design, att design inte bara innebär att det ska vara snyggt osv. Plus att att den sporrar till eget arbete! Mycket positivt! Att det finns samlat på nätet. Material som går att fortsätta arbeta med. Mycket information och inspiration till fortsatt arbete. Jag gillar att det är mycket bilder att fästa sig vid. + Fick många tips och det var mycket inspirerande och intressant. + All kul information som ex att det var en lag i England som sa att prostituerade skulle bära något rött. mycket användbart för äldre barn som läser och kan söka på datorn. + Det var en mycket bra sida! Jag hade kul under hela tiden jag befann mig på den. Det finns fortfarande lite tekniska problem. Man blir utkastad på några ställen. Men som sagt... bra jobbat, kul sida, den kommer jag att använda! + (-) att jag kan använda den i undervisningen + att den inte är så statisk utan det finns en struktur och en rörelse som väcker nyfikenhet och som känns lite som att upptäcka världen + En samlad plats där man kann hitta formgivning/design från olika tidsepoker och få en uppfattning om förändring och utveckling av produkterna... Få en uppfattning om hur en produkt tas fram m.m. Jätte bra! + Positivt att den är fräsch. MEN den är fruktansvärt anonym, rörig och totalt oöverskådlig. Man förstår inte strukturen. Dåligt att man måste välja om man vill in på Se, Veta eller Visa. Man går in och man har ingen aning om var man är. Alla länkar är dolda. Om man är dyslektiker, blind, synskadad eller har andra funktionshinder gissar jag att man har stora problem. Webbplatsen har flera rörelse och förändrignseffekter som är totalt onödiga och som bara tar en massa tid. De kan kännas lite roliga första gången men man kommer att bli fullständigt galen om man ska ha denna webbplats som läromedel. Dessa effekter tillför ingenting i upplevelse eller förståelse. (+) - Väldigt lättnavigerad och stilren. + ljudet. men bilderna borde vara över hela sidan.. inte centrerade i mitten +- grafiken och upplevelsen + Det fanns bra med information och det var lätt att hitta det man ville se. + lätt tligänglidt och bra anpassat till ungdommen + vet inte Den var inte så mossig, som vissa andra sidor. + SNYGGT GJORT! + att den är speciellt anpassad för ungdommar + intesseväckande + bra gjort bra på olika sett + Arr den var så fin och lärorik. + All tillgänglig information + Det var bra länkar så att man hittade på webbplatsen bra och grafiken tyckte jag var bra med vissa undantag. + Jag tycker att det mest positiva med sidan är att man får mycket med information från alla delar av designen + Hyffsad enkel design. inte så kronglig.
