Passes corresponding to a minimum 15 credits are required from semester 3 of which 12 credits must be from clinical training. Course description The course is a clinical course that begins with one week of theory and continues with four weeks of clinical training in emergency and perioperative care. The course integrates nursing science (5 credits) and Medical Science (2.5 credits). The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge in emergency and perioperative care. Objectives Upon completion of the module, the student should be able to: Knowledge and understanding: 1. give an account of the aetiology, prevention, assessment and treatment related to acute conditions and in the event of the failing vital functions 2. demonstrate knowledge of relevant policy documents

2 2 Skills and abilities: 3. under supervision apply nursing measures in acute states and in the event of failing vital functions Ability to evaluate and approach: 4. demonstrate the ability to take into consideration cultural and ethical aspects of emergency and perioperative care. Content The course content includes: Assessment (symptoms, signs, tests) in acute conditions and in the event of failing vital functions Pharmacology and pharmacological care for acute and perioperative care (including pain management) Cultural and ethical issues in acute and perioperative care Interventions in the event of acute conditions and failing vital functions (emergency care) The nursing process in emergency care Nurse-patient relationship in emergency situations Perioperative care, intensive care, surgical care, anesthesia care Technical healthcare aspects within emergency and perioperative care Policy documents (laws, statutes, guidelines, healthcare programmes) Forms of instruction The teaching methods used in the course are lectures, skills training and clinical training. An examination and clinical training are both compulsory. Examination Student performance in the course will be assessed as follows: Examination: Individual sit-in examination in which theory (1.5 credits) comprising 0.5 credits in nursing science and 1 credit in medical science, learning objectives 1, 2 and 4. Grades: fail, pass, pass with distinction. Clinical training: (6 credits) comprising 4.5 credits in nursing science and 1.5 credits in medical science, learning objectives 3 and 4. Grades: fail, pass. To pass the course, a pass is required in the individual written examination (1.5 credits) and a pass in the clinical training (6 credits). To pass the course, with distinction a pass with distinction is required in the individual written exam (1.5 credits) and a pass in the clinical training (6 credits). Refer to the study guide for grading criteria. Any student who fails the examination will be permitted to resit the examination four (4) times. Anyone who fails the examination twice has the right to request a different examiner. Any student who fails the clinical training placement aspect of a course will be offered one (1) new opportunity within the framework of the course.

3 3 If a student withdraws from the clinical training placement early on his/her own initiative, the student will fail the course. In such cases, the student is offered a new clinical training session the next time the course is offered, provided that he/she has not already reached the maximum number of examination opportunities (maximum 2). If an examiner determines that a decision regarding a grade is obviously incorrect because new circumstances have come to light or for any other reason, the decision shall be changed provided it does not lower the grade. The examiner can stop a student's clinical training or the like with immediate effect if the student demonstrates such serious inadequacies in knowledge, skills or approach that patient safety or patient confidence in the healthcare system is jeopardized. If clinical training is stopped in such a manner, it means that the student has failed the element in question and one clinical training opportunity is used up. In such cases, an individual action plan is drafted, indicating which activities and knowledge checks are required before the student is given a new clinical training opportunity for the course in question.
